    These companies are just turning potential customers off. You will most likely purchase a competing product now. I know I would.

    A couple of things he could have done that may have brought about a less intrusive outcome... once he determined that he did not want to submit the form he had filled out, he could have deleted the text he had typed in, or better yet (because sometimes deletion does not delete), he could have changed the email address to something else, then deleted or closed the session.

    Editing the info actually seems like the better way to go, because that way the website has something they think is valid to work with, but in fact they have nothing. Once we all understand what is being done, there are effective countermeasures that can be taken.
