Zoox Inc said on Tuesday it had settled a lawsuit with Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) after admitting that some new hires from the electric carmaker were in possession of certain Tesla documents when they joined the U.S. self-driving car startup.

Tesla lawyers filed a lawsuit in March last year against four former employees and Zoox, alleging the employees stole proprietary information and trade secrets for developing warehousing, logistics and inventory control operations.
Zoox said the settlement required it to pay Tesla an undisclosed amount and undergo an audit to ensure that none of its employees had retained or are using Tesla’s confidential information.

“Zoox acknowledges that certain of its new hires from Tesla were in possession of Tesla documents pertaining to shipping, receiving, and warehouse procedures when they joined Zoox’s logistics team,” Zoox said.

In a paper published on the preprint server Arxiv.org this week, researchers at Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) propose an AI technique to improve autonomous vehicles’ traffic movement predictions. It’s directly applicable to the driverless technologies that Uber itself is developing, which must be able to detect, track, and anticipate surrounding cars’ trajectories in order to safely navigate public roads.

The researchers report that SC-GAN reduced off-road false positives — a metric measuring the percentage of predicted trajectory points that were off-road, or outside of the drivable region for each car — by 50% compared with a baseline.
Qualitatively, the researchers say that SC-GAN successfully predicted cars’ movements even in fairly challenging edge cases.

“Motion prediction is one of the critical components of the self-driving technology, modeling future behavior and uncertainty of the tracked actors in [the self-driving vehicle’s] vicinity,” wrote the study’s coauthors.

Chinese driverless car start-up Pony.ai has launched a delivery service in Irvine, California using its autonomous vehicles as people remain stuck at home due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Pony.ai has repurposed its fleet of 10 vehicles for deliveries. It has teamed up with e-commerce site Yamibuy for the initiative.
Once a customer in the Irvine area places an order on Yamibuy, an autonomous car will pick up the package and deliver it to the destination. The customer can either come to the car to collect it or an operator, who will be in the car, will drop it off at the doorstep.

The whole process is contactless, the company claims. A Pony.ai spokesperson said the company can deliver somewhere between 500 to 700 packages a day.

Zoox today published a video showcasing its autonomous system driving for an hour in downtown San Francisco, and performing a range of complex maneuvers in heavy, multi-lane vehicle traffic and dense pedestrian crowds.
While it’s difficult to glean much without data from additional real-world tests, the clip is demonstrative of a trend among self-driving startups: Showing rather than telling.

In the video, which was recorded with a safety driver behind the wheel, Zoox’s retrofitted Toyota Highlander is shown making an unprotected left turn at a 6-way intersection and traversing a tunnel without the use of GPS. The Highlander also climbs up steep hills with occluded crests, makes right turns on red at 4-way intersections, and at one point drives down the iconic Lombard Street and overtakes a row of three double-parked cars.

The perception system also tracks certain pedestrian attributes, like whether a person is standing or walking and the direction they’re facing, and whether they’re looking at a phone; pushing a stroller or carrying things; and even whether they’re riding an escooter.

Chinese internet giant Baidu is offering free trial robotaxi rides to the general public in Changsha and making them available through its regular search and navigation apps, as the coronavirus pandemic bolsters its faith in an “unmanned and intelligent” future.

Starting from this week, commuters in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, can hail a free autonomous ride via its popular search engine app Baidu and navigation app Baidu Maps, the company announced in a statement on Monday. It added that this is the first time robotaxi services are being offered on nationwide apps.
Previously, users had to go through a round of screening and safety training before they could try Baidu’s service out. The new stage of trials removes this requirement, as well as the need to download a stand-alone ride-hailing app.

“Through over six months of operation among seed users, Baidu’s Apollo robotaxi program has set up a complete mechanism for safety evaluation and technical support,” the Nasdaq-listed company said in the statement on Monday.

Tesla has begun the wide release of Software Update 2020.12.6 within the United States, which includes the highly-anticipated Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control for Autopilot.
The update is available for Tesla owners under the latest hardware 3 that have also purchased the Full Self-Driving suite.

The new update will enable vehicles to automatically react to traffic lights and stop signs when using Traffic-Aware Cruise Control or Autosteer as part of Navigate on Autopilot. In the initial Beta rollout, drivers will be prompted to initiate confirmation of vehicle safety when navigating through an intersection by pressing the gear stalk, or by briefly touching the accelerator pedal.

The service is available from Monday via AutoNavi’s Amap app, known as Gaode in Chinese, from which users can choose to request both a regular car with driver or a self-driving RoboTaxi from AutoX at the same time. The app’s algorithm determines which vehicle to dispatch based on the earliest time of arrival.

“The seamless combination of autonomous and human-driving fleets is a crucial step for the adoption and commercialisation of self-driving technology,” AutoX founder and chief executive Xiao Jianxiong said in a statement on Monday.

Ford is pushing back the launch of its forthcoming robotaxi and autonomous delivery services from 2021 to 2022, the company announced today, due to the economic impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“Given the challenges of the current business environment, as well as the need to evaluate the long-term impact of COVID-19 on customer behaviors, Ford made the decision to shift the launch of its self-driving services to 2022,” Ford said in a statement to The Verge
The company has spent the last few years testing self-driving prototypes in Miami, Austin, and Washington, DC as it got ready to launch the services, though it hadn’t made any announcements about in which markets it planned to operate.

Some startups, like Zoox, have cut headcount in a bid to save money, while others, like Nuro and EasyMile, are partnering with the healthcare industry to deliver goods and medical supplies.

Elon Musk says the price will rise substantially in the future. There’s more we don’t know about this plan than we do know. One could think of it as a variation of the “lease or buy?” conundrum.

No one knows if that is what Elon has in mind, though. All we can say at the moment is that, based on green’s tweet, the pay-as-you-go option is now included in Tesla software. Details on how the program works will have to come from Tesla when the company feels the time is right.

Chipmaker Intel Corp (INTC.O) has bought Israeli public transit app maker Moovit for about $900 million to help it develop self-driving “robotaxis” that could take to the streets in early 2022, the company said on Monday.

Moovit will remain independent while its technology and the data it collects from more than 800 million users in 102 countries will be integrated into Intel’s Israel-based autonomous car unit Mobileye.
The price paid was nearly twice the $500 million valuation when Moovit last raised money in 2018. Intel owned about 7% of Moovit through a previous equity investment and paid about $840 million in cash to assume full ownership.

“Moovit is an acquisition that fills some very critical gaps that we have going forward,” Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua told Reuters.
The initial goal, he said, was to have a small fleet of driverless taxis in countries like Israel, France and South Korea.

The Swedish outfit’s marketing department deserves some credit there, for sure, but they’ve got good stuff to work with.
Now it’s once again in the vanguard, announcing Wednesday that it will be the first automaker to use a lidar laser vision system to enable what it calls “fully autonomous highway driving” in its cars, starting in 2022.

That news is the result of a deal with Luminar, the eight-year-old lidar company helmed by 25-year-old Austin Russell. Instead of the sort of spinning gumdrop setup used by Waymo, Cruise, Argo, and others making self-driving cars for use in taxi or delivery fleets, Luminar’s lidar is about the size of a VCR tape and fits sleekly into the car’s roof, just above the windshield.

The Alphabet-backed autonomous vehicle startup described this as the first part of a “tiered approach” to gradually relaunch operations with its fleet, with commercial service to follow only after the health and safety of riders can be ensured.
That’s all to say that Waymo’s eponymous Waymo One ride-hailing service, which was put on pause in late March, won’t resume pickups and dropoffs just yet.

Self-driving vehicle startup Voyage said Monday that it has inked a deal with Fiat Chrysler to supply purpose-built vehicles, a partnership that will help accelerate its plan to launch a fully driverless ride-hailing service.

Voyage, a three-year-old startup that tests and operates a self-driving vehicle service (with human safety operators) in retirement communities in California and Florida, started by modifying Ford Fusion vehicles. The company then began modifying FCA’s Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans with its autonomous vehicle technology.
This new deal, which was nearly two years in the making, marks a critical step in Voyage’s plan to deploy fully driverless vehicles as a ride-hailing service.

“This opportunity gives engineering and product development teams at Voyage and FCA a greater understanding of the impact of AV technology use on the underlying vehicle, reducing the learning curve for all and guiding future vehicle development,” an FCA spokesperson said in an email to TechCrunch.

In a conversation with VentureBeat last week, CEO Karl Iagnemma described the effort as “a way to try to give back to the community.”

Deliveries are being made throughout the Valley and are anticipated to continue as long as the pandemic continues. Iagnemma says there aren’t currently plans to expand, but that the Hyundai-Aptiv Driving Joint Venture intends to work with Delivering with Dignity in the future.

In March, the coronavirus pandemic forced companies testing autonomous vehicles in the U.S. to pause operations temporarily. Safety drivers, along with engineers and developers, were told to stay home until further notice, as shelter-in-place orders made public road testing impossible.
In the interim, these companies — among them Waymo, Cruise, Uber, Lyft, and Aurora — leaned on simulation to continue development of their autonomous vehicle platforms.

“We will keep monitoring the situation and carefully plan out how we go back to normalcy,” said a Pony.ai spokesperson. “We continuously improve our autonomous driving technology, along with the essential services we provide.”
In Moscow and Israel, Yandex says it adopted precautions to continue its robo-taxi operations while minimizing the risk of viral spread. Only one safety driver is allowed in a vehicle per shift and cars are regularly disinfected. Medical checks are mandatory for employees, and Yandex’s Moscow facility has been rearranged in accordance with social distancing rules.

VectorNet aims to help predict the movements of road users by building representations to encode information from maps, including real-time trajectories. Waymo, like rivals Cruise and Aurora, collects high-definition, precise-to-the-centimeter maps of regions where its autonomous vehicles drive. Paired with sensor data, these provide context to the Waymo Driver, Waymo’s full-stack driverless system.
