That seems to be our problem - we are so divided in who to believe. Some believe the "mainstream" media, some believe the "lamestream" media.

Amazon.com Inc. [...] will begin allowing third-party sellers on its platform to ship “nonessential” items to the e-commerce giant this week, a signal that the company is ramping up to meet broader consumer needs, according to people familiar with the matter.

Last month, Amazon made a decision to prioritize so-called essential items such as cleaning products, health-care items and shelf-stable food at its warehouses to meet customer demand. Amazon stopped accepting shipments of items from sellers that didn’t correspond to the shopping needs created by the virus. The mandate caused unrest for its army of third-party sellers, which account for 58% of Amazon’s sales.

“Later this week, we will allow more products into our fulfillment centers,” said an Amazon spokeswoman. “Products will be limited by quantity to enable us to continue prioritizing products and protecting employees, while also ensuring most selling partners can ship goods into our facilities.”

A court in Nanterre, France, has ruled that Amazon should greatly restrict orders in France in the coming weeks. According to the decision that AFP and a union have obtained, Amazon can only accept orders of groceries, hygiene and health-related products.
The company has 24 hours to comply or it’ll have to pay a fine of €1 million per day.

The court has ruled that Amazon can’t keep operating as usual under these circumstances. But the company can still accept orders of essential items. It has to overhaul its operations if it wants to accept more orders going forward.
According to Le Parisien, the decision will remain valid for up to one month, pending a review of COVID-19-related risks. The court could decide to extend the restrictions.

Amazon (AMZN.O) will keep its six warehouses in France closed until at least April 22 after a stand-off with unions over sanitary conditions amid the coronavirus outbreak, it said on Sunday.

A French court last week ordered Amazon to restrict its deliveries to bare essentials such as groceries and medical supplies while it makes thorough safety checks.
But Amazon went further and suspended activity at six so-called fulfilment centres where it processes and packs items, in one of the biggest fallouts from the backlash yet.

In addition, the company has said it will try to minimise disruptions by using other warehouses in Europe to fulfil orders, though some shoppers said they had already been warned of delays of up to four weeks to receive their goods.

A French court will on Friday decide whether to back Amazon’s (AMZN.O) appeal against an order to restrict the goods it can deliver, which led it to close its warehouses in France and left many small firms struggling to ship products.
“It’s been horrendous,” said Yannick Jan, whose stationery company on the outskirts of Paris has been trying to handle 600 orders a day from its own premises, rather than the usual 80, since Amazon warehouses shut on April 16. The firm brought back some staff it had laid off.

If Amazon’s appeal is thrown out on Friday, it could yet find a compromise with workers allowing warehouses to reopen, though a ruling in unions’ favour would add weight to their demands.
“I can reassure everyone - we are heading towards a solution,” said Laurent Dégousée of the Sud union that brought the claim, and which wants Amazon and postal services to restrict the shipments they process.

Amazon will be allowed to deliver digital products, office goods, pet supplies, groceries, drinks and personal care products as well as the essential health and food goods allowed in the previous ruling.

The appeals court also lowered the amount Amazon would be fined for each violation, from one million euros ($1.08 million) to 100,000 euros.

"Unfortunately, this means we have no choice but to extend the temporary suspension of activities at our French distribution centres while we evaluate the best way to operate in light of the Court of Appeal decision," it said.

Amazon on Friday confirmed it plans to gradually start re-opening its French warehouses on May 19, about a month after shutting them down.

In a statement, Amazon spokesperson Lisa Levandowski said Amazon is currently finalizing the re-opening process with French unions and work councils.

"We are hopeful that we will be able to re-open our French fulfilment centres in the coming days," she said. "This follows five weeks of discussions in which we have repeatedly provided clarification and information about the extensive safety measures already implemented at our fulfilment centres to keep our employees safe."

For weeks, Amazon stopped coupons, product recommendations and promotional deals. Mother’s Day items weren’t displayed on the homepage and Prime Day has reportedly been postponed indefinitely. It slowed down advertising, reviews, and its affiliate marketing and Fulfilled by Amazon programs, while placing strict limits on incoming inventory.

“They didn’t have a choice but to slow down traffic, to turn off a lot of the features that were driving additional revenue and sales so that they could do their best to to supply families in need right now with these essential goods. [...]”
Now, Amazon has started to turn these features back on, and delivery speeds are returning to normal.
