Microsoft has been silently fixing a lot of things recently. I don't know how I feel about it. I found a couple of issues with a recent update to Office 365 and the issues went away between supposed released updates. There is no way these things changed without some kind of updates being silently pushed. They have too much control of my PC without telling me what they are doing. :doubt:

Thanks a lot mood for providing the actual explanation. Another mystery: why this wasn't provided from the beginning. :cautious: Especially when lots of people were reporting this issue and waiting for the fix.

I've been using WD together with Malwarebytes Premium for a number of months now without issue... in fact the total lack of any warning alerts (from WD) is slightly disconcerting :) I note that giveaway site (Tickcoupon) is giving away an Avast Premium Security licence which on my system gives a subscription to Xmas 2050. Question is whether their premium suite with firewall is better than Microsoft's Defender+firewall? Opinions appreciated.

(PS I'm aware of the data sharing concerns that have plagued Avast in recent times but that can all be switched off)

"Better" is terribly subjective. Avast has hardened mode with aggressive option. WD can be hardened using ConfigureDefender, a simple GUI front-end to easily enable WD advanced settings https://github.com/AndyFul/ConfigureDefender I'd say it depends on which performs better on your machine. Since you're using MBAM Premium I'd stick with this setup.

Following on from my post on Thursday I decided to give Avast Premium Security a whirl just to see how it compared... wow come back WD all is forgiven! Avast Premium made my PC crawl in a way I don't recall Avast Free ever doing. The only extra layers used over and above the Free version were the Firewall & extra Ransomware protection.

Uninstalled, I have my answer :) WD+Malwarebytes Premium works for me. I hardened Defender with ConfigureDefender & Windows with recommended Syshardener tweaks too, something I'd been meaning to do for a while.

Did you made a full scan and rebooted afterwards? Was Avast still heavy?

Yes. I did full scans before installing Avast with every on-demand utility I had to check system was clean. Uninstalled MBAM Premium, rebooted, installed Avast, rebooted, ran Avast full scan, rebooted again to run a Boot-time scan too then used computer for 48hrs (during which time it had been switched on/off & rebooted several times). My PC is a few years old but it has previously run Avast Free alongside MBAM without the same level of performance impact. With Avast Premium running on its own everything seemed to take extra time; startup, opening browsers, opening applications/programs compared to WD+MBAM, to the point of drumming my fingers on the desk waiting for system to respond! The length of time a full Macrium Reflect backup took was also painfully slow compared to normal... almost 30mins longer.

I installed the latest Insider build 19603.1000 and thought I would share, in passing, the new Defender icon. :cautious:

Defender scans have been periodically malfunctioning lately, right? I ran a Full Scan just now, it slowed down midway but ran to completion. Only thing I notice (as usual): the rolling counter went to about 450,000 files scanned but the final result was this:
    deffullsc.PNG
The Definition version was 1.313.1666.0, since updated. The main point: this is an Insiders build 19608.1000. I assume this hanging is occurring on v.1909 (release)?

The cause of the crashes as reported on Bleepingcomputers is an extra dot in filenames eg. "file..exe" that causes WD to crash.

Reproduced on Latest Slow release 2004

I've got over 20,000 files with the double dot in 'em. All residing under C:\Windows\servicing and C:\Windows\WinSXS.

Interesting...I checked in those locations, all single dot files. I re-ran a Full scan, this it time took under 3 minutes, it completed very well. Looks like I dodged a bullet running a Fast ring Insider build.
