My conclusion is that the tilde in the directory (~00~) causes some issues for PrivaZer on your PC. I'm writing a fix. Hold on.
This is the bug you reported : https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/privazer-discussion-thread.341840/page-81#post-2879731 it seems that space characters were replaced by a tilde. Is that correct? But when are they replaced? Just after the cleanup with PrivaZer or when the backup runs?
Yes, just sent you an email now. Not sure what help I am going to be as I will have to try to remote into the work computer as we are all on virus lock down here.
I've emailed you the result of my tests. No ~ found in the path on the slave volume V: encrypted with Veracrypt and with a NTFS format, neither after a cleanup with PrivaZer nor after a sync with the backup program you mentioned.
Sorry for my slow reply, you ended up in my spam folder LOL I have re-tested and found similar renaming issues. I have sent more detail in my email. Thanks again for your help.
I tried again to reproduce the issue on Win7 x64 . I created a Veracrypt container (mounted as V:\) of around 1 GB. I formatted it with NTFS I created a folder and a jpg file in it (like you) : V:\test drive\folder\New Folder\To Take\test 2\DDC12313.JPG I cleaned the V: drive with PrivaZer. No issue found. Your problem is that the folder V:\test drive\folder\New Folder\To Take\test 2 appears in Windows Explorer as : V:\test drive\folder\New Folder\To Take\TEST2~1 after the cleanup with PrivaZer. I have not seen this in my tests. Anyway, you have to know that this is not really a renaming of the folder, but what you see is just the short filename of you folder in 8.3 format. More info here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.3_filename My suggestions : Can you try the new v4 pre-release ? https://www.privazer.com/PrivaZer_free-v4alpha4.exe Maybe you use a different Veracrypt volume. Can you check ? The properties of my Veracrypt container is as follows :
I am just testing the new alpha4 Just to make something clear, I encrypt the entire slave drive not just make a container. Whole Drive Encryption not file volume.
Just tested Using same set up as described but using PrivaZer_free-v4alpha4.exe Same problem remains. However what I did was to open the folder whose name is changed "V:\test drive\folder\New Folder\To Take\test 2". I then kept refreshing "V:\test drive\folder\New Folder\To Take\test 2" during cleaning. What I noticed is that I am able to open "V:\test drive\folder\New Folder\To Take\test 2" right up until PrivaZer starts to clean the MFT then access to that folder is denied meaning it has been renamed. The folder is again renamed to "V:\test drive\folder\New Folder\To Take\TEST2~1" So I would suggest this is directly associated with MFT cleaning as right up until MFT cleaning starts everything is fine.
OK. I need more info. Send me a screenshot of the Veracrypt volume properties as I did 2 messages ago. Did you copy/paste the "test 2" folder from a veracrypt volume?
1. OK I will email screenshot 2. Yes I copied them from another physically seperate whole disk encrypted drive on the same physical computer Just noticed something else while repeatedly testing. I see that even though I have run PrivaZer several times on this drive while testing the free space still requires cleaning every time. I am not adding or deleting files on this drive while testing so it would seem PrivaZer is not cleaning the free space properly. I ran PrivaZer again on this set up which is why I could not reply quickly but this time I made sure the "test 2" folder was empty to see if any of the files within were the cause of the problem. Even when empty the same problem remains.
I'm testing but can you copy/paste the folders to a non-encrypted drive firstly. Then copy-paste them to your V: volume
OK I will do that. I have been running a new test. This time I unchecked clean MFT and the folder does not get renamed so I am sure this is to do with MFT cleaning.
Sorry it takes a while for these tests to run as it is a large drive. I copied the "test 2" folder to a 4GB flash drive formatted exFAT. Deleted "test 2" from V drive. Copied "test 2" back to V drive from the flash drive. Ran PrivaZer as usual with clean MFT enabled. The folder was NOT renamed !!!!! YAY ! During all these tests the free space is not being cleaned properly as PrivaZer is showing a large free space area to clean each time. when running, PrivaZer appears to be cleaning this area but it is repeated after each test without anything being deleted from V drive between tests. Now you have worked out the problem do I need to run your last test?
