I don't understand how distributed computing helps with SETI so I can't really comment on that. If I understand SETI correctly, it looks for electromagnetic (radio, etc) signals of alien origin. IMO, this seems limited to detecting life that's using technology comparable to ours, a narrow range of time in technological evolution. Finding cures is always more glamorous than finding the cause. It's also much more likely to get funded. There's money to be made with cures. Finding causes can step on some very rich and powerful toes, especially those in the petroleum, plastics, and chemical industries. If someone could use distributed computing to determine the genetic effects of the different chemicals that are used in and on our foods, clothes, etc, I'd set up every PC I have to fold for that.
Not much money to be made. Money is actually made from treating, not curing diesease. If a disease is cured then the big pharmaceutical companies are no longer making money from an individual, they make way more money by supplying drugs which can help manage a diesease, but not cure it. So taking the drugs is required for the rest of the persons life. There is nothing glamerous about finding cures, which is why you will never hear talk of cures for cancer (as exmple), amongst the mainstream media or the various cancer foundations, yet there have been many differnet cures available for cancer for years, and a number books have been written on the subject. Sure there may be lots of funding provided for finding cures for dieseases, but the cures are never actually found becuase there is too much money at stake.

FanJ--this is great! So, I downloaded the updated version, and now am folding for two COVID-related projects exclusively. Was folding for team 50711. Now folding for....Wilders! Why not? Hope it does something, I really do. Spoiler: fahwilders
@plat1098 do you know if you select to contribute to only specific research, will you also get other project's job? Let' say there are no COVID-19 jobs, will client download and compute other jobs until new COVID-19 are released?
Minimalist: personally, I don't know the answer as I just started with this a few weeks ago and it's been sporadic. I found a thread with an answer by Joxster stating that if, for example, no COVID projects are available, you will be sent another project dealing with some other disease. Closest I came to this question was with the prev. FAH version. I selected "any disease" and was getting COVID ones. Then it was idle for quite a while, no projects at all. Then, very recently, I got a labor-inducing drug project for my gpu. Now, so far, I selected COVID projects specifically and it's been just that. Who knows for how long, though. https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/gadg...r-resources-disease-research.html#post4772972 Edit: his response pertains to the prev. version. Maybe there is a more specific answer later in the thread.
Folding@home Portable 7.6.9 (distributed computing project) Released (April 18, 2020) (PortableApps.com)
My post from Sep 30, 2012 I did start backup, but quit folding completely in January of 2015. It's just to hot where I live.
Yeah, my gpu is pretty much at max, running at 77 deg C usually. I prob. won't run it in summer b/c I'm poor and air conditioning is a luxury. It seems even though I specified "COVID-19" projects in the new client, I got an unrelated project for my gpu tonight having to do with labor-inducing drugs, again. So it seems, if there's no project of your preference available right away, you'll be assigned one outside your range anyway.
