LMDE 4 “Debbie” released

LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for “Linux Mint Debian Edition”. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu.

LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead.
This new version of LMDE contains many improvements.

The Linux Mint project head, Clem Lefebvre, has officially announced the availability of Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 4, just days after Neowin reported that stable builds were appearing on third-party mirrors. With today’s launch, we get a detailed list of all the new features and instructions on how to upgrade LMDE 3 installations.

The biggest change in this update is that it’s based on Debian 10 meaning newer packages will be available to download and new hardware is supported. Other features include home directory encryption, NVMe support, SecureBoot support, support for Btrfs submodules, a new installer, improvements from Linux Mint 19.3 such as Cinnamon 4.4 and new default apps, and a few other smaller changes.

If you like to experiment with Linux operating systems in a virtual machine, LMDE 4 now defaults to a minimum resolution of 1024x768 in VirtualBox, making it feel a bit more like you’re running it on an actual computer. [...]

LMDE is the Linux Mint project’s backup plan should Ubuntu, the base for other Linux Mint releases, ever disappear. Aside from that, LMDE also ensures that any software that the project develops continues to be compatible outside of Ubuntu.

I just installed it into a UEFI system. Easy install. It looks "almost identical" to Mint Cinnamon 19.3.

I believe this is an important Distro for the Linux community. I read its stated purpose is to carry on Mint if Ubuntu goes away.

I'll add also in case Ubuntu goes all payware like their afair Ultimate Edition.

I've used LMDE 3 and 4 and I really like it. Frankly, I wish the Mint people would base Mint on Debian permanently as I believe Debian to be a much more stable base.

Only available with the Cinnamon DE, for those wondering.
I personnally run Debian Buster directly, and at install, with the net edition, you can choose the DE you want. (you can even install more than one or all available if you wish)
I went with the Gnome DE which is great with the dash-to-panel extension.
However after installation I went with the X.org server instead of Wayland.

It's true! Called "Linux Mint Debian Edition," or "LMDE" for short, it is far less popular than the "regular" Mint. Then why does it exist? Believe it or not, it exists (partly) to serve as a contingency plan in case Ubuntu ever stops being developed.

Today is November 1, and the Linux Mint developers have shared some monthly development news that is largely boring. One small tidbit of information is interesting, however; Linux Mint Debian Edition 4 (code-named "Debbie") will ditch the Mozilla Firefox ESR web browser. LMDE 4 will instead move users to the normal "rapid release" variant.

More importantly, the Extended Support Release of Firefox is typically used by the Enterprise, where businesses want employees to use a very stable version of the operating system -- they typically don't need or want new features frequently. With that said, it is unlikely that many (if any) businesses are actually using LMDE.

Home users -- the people most likely to use Linux Mint Debian Edition 4 -- will be much better served by the rapid release version of the browser.

I'd rather use Debian itself instead of LMDE.
And Debian is offering Firefox ESR, which is pretty fine for me.
