Earlier this month, the CEO of an Italian 3D-printing startup learned that a hospital near the center of the coronavirus outbreak in Italy was running short on a small but crucial component: the valves that connect respirators to oxygen masks.
The company that makes the valves couldn't keep up with the demand, and doctors were in search of a solution.

Similar efforts have popped up around the world. In Liverpool, New York, Isaac Budmen and Stephanie Keefe were printing more than 300 face shields for workers at a coronavirus test site in Syracuse this week, according to The Post-Standard of Syracuse.

But the coronavirus has suddenly made it a crucial resource. On Thursday, Slavin called on people with 3D printers to help make protective masks for hospital staff.

"I would hope companies across the country ... would start making masks later this afternoon," he told NBC Boston.
The team has assembled an international panel of experts to shape the development of the ventilator and will officially launch the competition, inviting anyone to participate, in the coming week.
"It's a worldwide hackathon," she said. "The best ideas come from outside your field. The answer will come from somebody who doesn't normally think about ventilation."

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has successfully tested the conversion of its 3D printers. Where models for aerospace research are usually produced, medical protective equipment can be manufactured during the Coronavirus crisis.
The review was prompted by a request from the European Commission for assistance in the production of urgently needed medical equipment.

The request specifically addressed the production of protective masks and valves for respirators using 3D printing. Despite the absence of technical specifications (CAD data), DLR’s Systemhaus Technik and its other sources of engineering expertise have succeeded in conducting tests with components based on freely available templates and with plastics approved for use in the medical sector. The rubber-like materials selected for the masks ensure a good fit and high user comfort.

DLR’s 3D printer capabilities are currently being assessed.
The most powerful printers at DLR can produce up to 10 protective masks or 15 valves for ventilators per day. By networking institutes and facilities, it will be possible to produce larger quantities.

Missouri pair use 3D printer to make face shields amid virus

A Missouri student and teacher are using 3D printing to supply health care facilities in the area with face shields amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A.T. Still University recruited senior Caleb Flaim and Rich Chapman, an engineering instructor at the Kirksville Area Technical Center, to help keep equipment stocked at Northeast Regional Medical Center and Kirksville Family Medicine.

“I’m happy that the odd skills I’ve picked up over the years using 3D printers is actually able to help people,” Flaim said.

University College London engineers worked with clinicians at UCLH and Mercedes Formula One to build the device, which delivers oxygen to the lungs without needing a ventilator.

Three federal agencies have teamed up to collectively leverage and accelerate 3D printing and other advanced manufacturing technologies in the fight against COVID-19.

The Food and Drug Administration, Veterans Affairs Department and National Institutes of Health recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize a unified effort through which they’ll solicit designs for, produce and test 3D-printed personal protective equipment and other medical supplies to support America’s response to the worldwide health emergency.

The 3D printer community is banding together in a cooperative effort to produce and distribute face shields which are much needed by NHS staff (and others) due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Volunteers are signing up across the country to help print face shields – if you have a 3D printer, you can sign up yourself by heading here – with delivery and distribution of the equipment being covered by a GoFundMe campaign (which has just exceeded its target goal of £40,000).
So those without a 3D printer can still contribute funds to delivery costs, and you can contact 3DCrowd UK via the aforementioned website to offer to help in other ways, if you’d like to get involved without 3D printing.

Oscar Valera likes to use 3D printers to build an assortment of crafts, but he is now turning his hobby toward the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
In just four days, the New Jersey high school teacher has printed and distributed 200 face shields to medical professionals across the country, including Florida and Texas. He is far from done.

“One woman told me what you’re doing right now is giving people peace of mind. You’re probably saving lives,” said Valera, who found a shield design posted online.
In Sunnyvale, California, community workspace nonprofit Maker Nexus has been running its 13 3D printers and three laser cutters nonstop. The company produced 1,800 masks for local hospitals and now has requests for another 13,000.

Elsewhere in Silicon Valley, more companies are joining in.
Fremont-based PrinterPrezz, a 3D-printing medical device contract manufacturer that specializes in metal spinal implants, switched production to printing PPE after getting a request from nearby Washington Hospital Healthcare System.

Now, as Covid-19 fractures the economy and brings entire industries to their knees, Bowtell’s skills have again found a new purpose.

Fourteen of his 20 3D printers are now being used to manufacture thousands of face shields for healthcare workers, who are struggling to access personal protective equipment amid widespread shortages.

“With 3D printing, we’ve been able to go from making hands to making face shields in a matter of, well, days,” he told the Guardian. “To completely revamp our line, that’s how agile this technology is and how flexible it is.”

Ultra Red Technologies, a 3D printing company based in Nairobi, Kenya, is one of many examples of businesses pivoting to the production of medical equipment, which is in high demand and short supply in the region. The company is now producing plastic face shields for local healthcare professionals.

"We're bridging the gap before a large-scale manufacturer comes onboard," Ultra Red co-founder Mehul Shah told Spark host Nora Young.
Shah expects Ultra Red to produce up to 500 of these face shields per day.

The face shield design has been approved for clinical use by the National Institutes of Health, a U.S.-based medical research agency, and Shah said the feedback from local healthcare practitioners in Kenya has been positive.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced it will be using 3-D printing to design, print, and produce its own medical devices.

According to a Nov. 5 press release, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) will partner with 3D Systems – a 3-D printer manufacturer – to design medical devices and take them through the FDA clearance process. VHA is looking to establish FDA-compliant manufacturing facilities within their hospitals for the production of additively manufactured medical devices.

According to the FDA, additive manufacturing is a process that “builds an object by sequentially building 2- layers and joining each to the layer below.”

“Point-of-care facilities increasingly show interest in using 3D solutions as new technology emerges, becomes more user friendly, and incorporates automation,” 3D systems said in a statement.

Interest in 3D printing medical devices came from supply chain issues amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in the spring, the VA needed personal protective equipment for its medical facilities. VHA began working with 3D Systems to print face masks. Once those went into production, the VA began producing nasopharyngeal swabs needed for COVID-19 testing.
