Corning’s name may be synonymous with innovative and damage-resistant glass, but the company also makes network connectivity solutions ranging from fiber optic cabling to cellular hardware for industrial wireless installations. Those cellular solutions were previously limited to 4G, but now Corning’s moving into 5G with indoor millimeter wave systems targeted at malls, offices, university campuses, hotels, and other enterprises.

The number of UK businesses set to invest in 5G solutions is set to soar from the current 15% to 70% in the next three years, but there is no commensurate uptick in confidence in successfully implementing them – nor indeed doing so without a major overhaul of their operating model.

That is the top-line finding of a new EY study, How 5G is redefining the world of enterprise, which surveyed 200 UK cross-sector businesses. The study found that most businesses (74%) believe 5G will enter the fabric of their business processes over the next five years.
EY believes the caution may be driven by organisations’ lack of understanding of 5G’s benefits, including knowledge gaps around use cases and concepts (78%) and a perception of 5G as only an incremental progression on 4G or Wi-Fi (70%).

Research from network test, monitoring and assurance technology provider Viavi Solutions has revealed a surge in the roll-out of 5G networks across the globe.

According to its fourth annual The state of 5G deployments report, as the battle for 5G supremacy heats up, a number of operators are blanketing the largest global population centres, with as many as five communications service providers (CSPs) deploying 5G in cities such as Los Angeles and New York.
As of January 2020, commercial 5G networks have been deployed in 378 cities across 34 countries.

The country boasting the most cities with 5G availability is South Korea with 85, followed by China with 57, the US with 50, and the UK with 31 cities.
The report concluded by forecasting that, going forward, the overarching driver for operators is likely to change from simply having 5G network availability to having the best 5G networks.

“Even as operators continue their 5G build-out, they will simultaneously have to shift gears from network validation and verification through to advanced analytics and automated network troubleshooting. The race for the best 5G network has only just begun.”

Telstra gains early access to trial mmWave 5G

Telstra has signalled its next move in Australia’s 5G landscape by giving customers early access to the mmWave spectrum.

The millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum offers users higher frequencies and data capacity and lower latency, ultimately leading to faster download speeds than other 5G spectrums.
It goes without saying that Telstra will be buying up as much bandwidth as it can when the auction takes place.

Telstra will trial the technology in “selected areas” but wouldn’t disclose any other specifics on the trials. Telstra’s 5G lead Paul Milford did however reveal that the company has been trialling 5G technology with Melbourne’s MCG. Penn added that users can expect “gigabit speeds” during trials.

“mmWave will supercharge 5G. Its higher capacity and the potential to deliver even faster speeds as well as lower latency will help power the next generation of devices and innovations,” said Penn.

Mid band radio frequencies are widely believed to be critical to deploying 5G cellular services, and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is continuing its push to open additional spectrum to U.S. carriers. Today, the FCC voted to approve a controversial payment package to incumbent users of the 3.7GHz to 3.98GHz band, offering satellite companies $9.7 billion in total to clear 280MHz of spectrum ahead of an auction to 5G carriers.

It’s unclear whether the companies will accept their billion-dollar incentives, and moreover, whether the payments are legally permitted absent Congressional approval.

Samsung’s new Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra are the first phones in the U.S. to support a range of 5G networks being rolled out here.
They work on the faster and slower versions of 5G networks.
I tested the Galaxy S20 Ultra for a week, and while it’s a great phone, there’s still no reason to buy a phone simply because it has 5G.

As fifth-generation wireless networks begin rolling out across the globe in 2020, though, the world's richest economy feels further behind than ever in the race to deploy new spectrum and networks to accommodate this major technical shift. And that trend shows few signs of letting up for years to come.

While American telecom operators AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint all have grand visions and big plans for 5G here in the US, none currently have the ability to deploy broad 5G networks that will be both comparable in size to and significantly more performant than their existing advanced 4G LTE networks.
And that's becoming hard to ignore in the face of the first popular 5G phones going on sale in this country, for which no 4G-only variants are available.

Arguably, the largest barrier to 5G in this country are the airwaves themselves; namely, there aren't enough of them to go around. And our federal government is really where the buck stops on that issue.

At the same time, it'l start using low-band 600MHz access that should both widen coverage and help you stay connected to 5G indoors. It'll eventually start using 3.5GHz service as well as spectrum sharing that lets it use LTE airwaves for 5G.

Now, the commission says, there’s “a substantial body of literature that has confirmed that [radio frequency/electromagnetic field] exposure within the ICNIRP (1998) restrictions does not cause adverse health effects.”

EE Extends 5G Network In 21 Towns And Cities

The 5G network of BT-owned operator EE has been expanded in the UK, with 21 new towns and cities added to the list.

O2 was the last major British operator to launch its 5G network, when its solution arrived months later in October 2019.

EE said that the addition of 21 new towns and cities, means that it has reached its 5G ambition of 5G in more than 70 large towns and cities by March 2020.

“We have 5G coverage in more places than any other operator, and remain focused on connecting even more towns and cities in 2020 and beyond to keep our customers connected in the busiest places,” said Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division.

What just happened? The Federal Communications Commission recently wrapped up the largest spectrum auction in US history in which 3,400 megahertz of millimeter-wave spectrum in the upper 37GHz, 39GHz and 47GHz bands was made available.

According to the FCC, bidders scooped up 99.9 percent of the available licenses, generating $7.6 billion in net bids and $4.47 billion after incentive payments. In total, 28 bidders collected 14,142 of the 14,144 licenses.
Documentation shows that Straight Path Spectrum, LLC, owned by Verizon, was the top spender in the auction, shelling out $3.4 billion for 4,940 licenses. The next biggest spender was FiberTower Spectrum Holdings LLC (AT&T), taking home 3,267 licenses on nearly $2.4 billion in bids. T-Mobile walked away with 2,384 licenses for $932 million, or $873 million after incentive payments from relinquishing spectrum usage rights.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said Auction 103 was a tremendous success, adding that the commission looks forward to the 3.5GHz auction slated to begin on June 25 followed by the C-band auction on December 8.

U.K. telecom regulator Ofcom has finalized rules for an upcoming auction of spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3.6 GHz to 3.8 GHz bands, with the aim of boosting the rollout of 5G technology across the country.

The regulator said in a release that it plans to release 80 megahertz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band, following a four-year program to clear the band of its existing uses for digital terrestrial TV and wireless microphones.

NTT Docomo to launch 5G on March 25

Japanese telco giant NTT Docomo said on Wednesday it would launch its 5G network on March 25.

The network will initially be available at 150 locations, before expanding to all prefectures across Japan by June, and is expected to reach 500 cities by March 2021. Speed-wise, the network will have a maximum downlink data rate of 3.4Gbps, before NTT lifts it to 4.1Gbps in June. Likewise, the uplink will start at a 182Mbps peak, before increasing to 480Mbps.
By the end of June 2021, NTT Docomo said it will have 10,000 base stations, and 20,000 by the end of March 2022.

Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd. (CHT) has selected Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) to provide the 5G platform to support its future network.
Taiwan’s largest telecom service provider will deploy a non-standalone (NSA) New Radio (NR) network on mid and high-frequency bands. It will use Ericsson Radio System base stations and Ericsson’s 5G Core, including 5G Evolved Packet Core, with Ericsson selected as the supplier for 5G Core.

Chafic Nassif, President of Ericsson Taiwan says: "Our enhanced 5G platform perfectly suits CHT’s needs to quickly launch new services to the market. This cooperation will serve to not only provide Taiwanese consumers and enterprises with the highest quality communication services but also accelerate the overall progress of 5G development in Taiwan.”

Ericsson's 5G core solution will support both 4G and 5G core networks to smoothly connect CHT's previous services to 5G.
Chunghwa Telecom has been working with Ericsson on 5G technology since 2017. The two companies are jointly developing 5G enterprise applications and support government policies to promote industrial transformation.

Apart from phones, KDDI has been working on ambitious plans to roll out 5G-powered augmented reality experiences within Japanese society.

Rival NTT Docomo will launch commercial 5G service across 29 prefectures on Wednesday, one day ahead of KDDI, with a 7,650 yen (~$69) plan that promises 100GB of data per month, though that cap will not initially be firm. Softbank will start with a smaller seven-prefecture 5G launch on Friday and plans to ask for 1,000 yen (~$9) as a 5G surcharge, but it will waive that fee for two years if customers sign up before the end of August.
