Microsoft is bringing its antivirus software to iOS and Android
New Defender mobile apps will be available later this year

Microsoft is planning to bring its Defender antivirus software to Android and iOS later this year. The software giant is developing apps for both mobile operating systems that are designed to provide antivirus prevention and a “full command line experience.” Microsoft isn’t revealing exactly what the apps will do just yet, but the company plans to preview them at the RSA Conference next week.

Microsoft’s mobile Defender clients will likely be very different to the desktop versions, especially as Apple’s iOS platform doesn’t allow apps to scan for malware across an iPhone or iPad.

One of the bigger goals for Defender on iOS and Android is phishing prevention to stop employees at companies from accidentally revealing their usernames, passwords, or other account information. How Microsoft achieves this on iOS isn’t clear just yet, though.

Despite Apple and Google's best efforts, malware and malicious apps are still a big concern on iOS and Android.
So today, Microsoft announced that it's bringing its Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) to the mobile operating systems. In other words, Microsoft is stepping in to fix a problem that Apple and Google can't seem to resolve.

Microsoft releases first public preview of its Defender antivirus on Android

Starting today, customers of Microsoft's commercial antivirus product -- Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) -- can install a first version of the product's Android port.

The product, named "Microsoft Defender ATP for Android," was announced at the RSA security conference in February this year, and has reached a first public preview today.
Companies that have contracted Microsoft Defender ATP protection have a new option in their dashboard where they can enable the feature and deploy an Android app to employees' devices.

Microsoft says the Defender ATP for Android app also comes with hidden features, courtesy of its integration into the larger and more complex Defender ATP, Intune, and Configuration Manager platforms.

"When Microsoft Defender ATP for Android finds that a device has malicious apps installed, it will classify the device as 'high risk' and will flag it in the Microsoft Defender Security Center," Kanishka Srivastava, Senior Program Manager at Microsoft, said today.
Microsoft launched a Linux client in public preview in February, when it also announced future public previews for Android and iOS. While the Android app entered public preview today, Microsoft said the iOS public preview is still coming, but merely scheduled for "later this year."

It was first reported in February that Microsoft was bringing its Defender anti-virus/anti-malware software to Linux and Android, and now the app has appeared on the Play Store as a software preview. It's only available to enterprise customers with a valid Microsoft 365 ES license, but the app description gives a clear picture of what it's intended for.

According to the Play Store listing, "Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) helps enterprise users stay protected from cyber security threats such as malicious apps, dangerous web sites that may try to steal information from them. It is also a platform that allows Security Operations teams to prevent, detect and investigate cyber security incidents in the enterprise."

Similarly to Google Play Protect, Microsoft Defender scans all installed APKs. Defender also has a built-in web filter, though it's not clear how this works on Android — perhaps the app uses a custom DNS or VPN server. You can see the Play Store listing from the link below.

Microsoft has just announced that Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is now generally available for iOS users. The public release of the app brings a bunch of capabilities for users, including custom Indicators, anti-phishing, and unsafe connection blocking.

“Microsoft Defender for Endpoint for iOS will offer protection against phishing and unsafe network connections from websites, emails, and apps. All alerts will be available through a single pane of glass in the Microsoft Defender Security Center. The portal gives security teams a centralized view of threats on iOS devices along with other platforms,” the company explained.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint adds zero-touch iOS onboarding

Microsoft says zero-touch onboarding for Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MDE) on iOS is now available in public preview, allowing enterprise admins to silently install Defender for Endpoint automatically on enrolled devices.

Once MDE silent deployment is configured, the iOS app will be installed on targeted devices without user interaction. The device will then be added to the Microsoft Defender Security Center portal.

Next, the user will be notified that the installation has been completed. MDE iOS protection capabilities such as anti-phishing, unsafe connection blocking, jailbreak detection, and vulnerability assessment will be automatically activated.

"With this new capability, enterprises can now deploy Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on iOS devices that are enrolled with Microsoft Endpoint Manager automatically, without needing end-users to interact with the app," Microsoft explained.

Well, being that it's an enterprise platform product, if the outfit that signs your paycheck uses Defender for Endpoint and chooses to roll out the mobile app and you are permitted the use of your personal device for company biznizz, you won't have much choice in the matter. Think of that as an ant-virus mandate. Or if they give you a company phone, so what?

I mean, no one here thinks this discussion is about a consumer Defender app for everyone? Like Bitdefender or DualSpace Studio's Super Security? Right??

Microsoft announced that the Mobile Network Protection feature is generally available to help organizations detect network weaknesses affecting Android and iOS devices running Microsoft's Defender for Endpoint (MDE) enterprise endpoint security platform.

Once Mobile Network Protection is toggled, MDE will provide protection and alerts when rogue Wi-Fi-related threats and certificates (the primary attack vector for Wi-Fi networks) are detected.

Threats this feature can spot include rogue hardware like Hak5 Wi-Fi Pineapple devices used by both pen-testers and cybercriminals to capture data shared within networks.

"As the world continues to make sense of the digital transformation, networks are becoming increasingly complex and provide a unique avenue for nefarious activity if left unattended," the company said in June when it announced the public preview.
