And BTW, I'm surprised that both Google and DuckDuckGo both are still serving malicious links, shouldn't they be able to filter this stuff out? When you do a search for "mcafee helpdesk" you will get to see a link to scammers as a top result. I saw this being mentioned on a Dutch TV show, these guys make millions with scamming people.

As compared to the more reasonable minds who always found it in the before times educational, innovative, and a productive resource for dare say fascinating artistry of digital good sense.

Google SafeBrowsing hasn't caught up an ongoing survey scam series which a single regex filter of uBO can almost perfectly block. When GSB blocked it, the scammers were already moving to new domains. Search for issues of AdGuardFilters@Github assigned to Chinaski1.

Only Chinese govt can do what you said because they have almost unlimited manpower - for western that will be amount to tremendous $$$. In the end, they're automatically generated links and those algorithms have no idea about what is good or bad. Only problem is most people haven't learned these algorithms and instead have illusion on so called AI.

What does this have to do with my question? Google really shouldn't be presenting scams as top results. Back in 2017 they also did this, scammers were able to steal money from customers from a Dutch bank named Knab, which weirdly enough didn't use 2FA. Those scammers simply build a fake Knab login page that came up on top on Google Search. Actually, it was even presented as an advertisement.

The weird thing about DDG is that it loads so slowly, it feels bloated. How the heck didn't they fix this. And yes, all this talk about Google SafeBrowsing but they don't even scan their own search results, what a joke.

Not wanting to defend Google as much as point out that there is probably no practical way in this world for anyone to filter out all of the bad links from Google. If they could they likely would, and if it was reasonably doable 3rd party security software would do the same. Just like spam. It is impossible to always correctly identify what is what. Can they do better? Maybe. Can this problem be entirely solved? Not unless someone figures out the technology to do so.

I'm sorry but a billion dollar company should be able to do better. Nowadays you have got stuff like AI and machine learning. I was thinking it could work like SiteAdvisor, but it shouldn't be visible to users of course. And besides, the fake McAfee helpdesk has been active for months and it's still up.

The company announced today that it will highlight special announcements like school closures, travel restrictions, event cancellation or stay-at-home guidelines from those entities on its search results. There are two ways for websites to be featured in Search: adding structured data to their web pages or submitting COVID-19 announcements in Search Console.

Google recommends adding the "SpecialAnnouncement" structured data to web pages since it's the standard format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content. With this method, a site's content with a COVID-19 announcement rich result can be highlighted in Search along with that page's regular snippet description. A COVID-19 announcement rich result can contain a short summary with an option to view more.

This tool is still in development. While this feature will be available first to government agencies and health organizations, Google plans to expand this capability to include more websites in the future.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Google has linked to and provided a number of convenient resources. People looking up COVID-19 information on the desktop web are seeing a redesigned Google Search experience with prominent sidebar to organize results.

This new look starts with a left navigation bar that features the “COVID-19 alert” badge up top and lists the name of the Knowledge Panel — “Coronavirus disease” — underneath. On the “Overview” page you get a carousel of “Top stories,” “Help and information” from relevant authorities, three “Top results,” and then “Local and health authorities on Twitter.”
The desktop variant has been in testing for the past several months, but only now widely rolling out for terms related to COVID-19 — including “unemployment” — as part of Google’s efforts to better serve information.

Google Search now links to coronavirus testing sites in your vicinity.

As part of the revamped Google Search desktop experience for queries related to COVID-19, there is a new “Testing” tab (via The Verge) in the red sidebar. A “Testing for coronavirus (COVID-19)” card lists some resources.
Underneath this is a link to Google’s “Coronavirus testing centers” list. Like other place queries, there’s a map at the right with locations on the left. The view is personalized to where you are and tapping a location provides entry requirements, address, and operating hours, as well as web results.

At the start of May, the Chrome team established metrics for building fast websites. Google today announced plans to incorporate “Core Web Vitals,” like page speed, when ranking how sites appear in Search next year.

The Core Web Vitals are currently comprised of three real-world metrics relating to speed (load time), responsiveness/interactivity, and visual stability of pages — like accidentally tapping the wrong button due to a site unexpectedly moving.

"The page experience signal measures aspects of how users perceive the experience of interacting with a web page. Optimizing for these factors makes the web more delightful for users across all web browsers and surfaces, and helps sites evolve towards user expectations on mobile."
An upcoming Search change will see Google incorporate those page experience metrics when ranking results. It will become one of the hundreds of signals — like HTTPS, mobile friendliness, and lack of pop-ups — that the engine uses to determine how sites are arranged and ordered for users. The company hopes to ultimately create a “holistic picture of the quality of a user’s experience on a web page.”

I don't care for a change such as this. Search results should be ranked by relevance. If then there are issues like a site being slow, maybe tag the result with that information and let the user decide if they want to click.

Following a test last August, Google has recently rolled out a new feature for Google Search. If you search and click on a Featured Snippet, Google will now highlight the content you’re looking for within the article.
Update 6/3/20: Google has widely rolled out support for highlighting content from search on standard HTML websites. Danny Sullivan details on Twitter that Google started rolling out this functionality as of late May, and at this point, it should be widely available for everyone.

With this feature, Google will highlight content from a Featured Snippet directly on a webpage. This might not appear for every single search result, but there are some examples that work consistently. SearchEngineLand points out that searching for “what does a VPN do” brings up a snippet from an article from either Norton or How-To-Geek that sees a portion of the article highlighted. A Google support page further details that website owners don’t need to make any changes to use this feature, it’s completely automatic. Plus, if Google can’t “confidently” highlight the correct content or a browser doesn’t support the feature, Google will just open the page as normal.
Notably, this feature rolled out to AMP pages in late 2018.

Google announced it has launched a new feature within Google Image search on mobile to show “quick facts about what you see on Google Images.” Google added under the image preview window knowledge panel details that you can open and expand to show more information about the image.

Knowledge panel expanders. Google will show drop down menus under the image preview that shows more details about the image. Google said “when you search for an image on mobile in the U.S., you might see information from the Knowledge Graph related to the result.
That information would include people, places or things related to the image from the Knowledge Graph’s database of billions of facts, helping you explore the topic more.”

Testing. Google has been testing this for the past few weeks and now has officially launched this.

We're all familiar with the "knowledge panels" that pop up in Google when a famous person's name is searched, but Google has been working on something like this, which it calls "people cards," for us regular people. We first learned about this back in February, when Google published some support pages (that it quickly took down), but the feature is now official for India.

Google is rolling out an update to Google Images designed to make it easier to license photographs or pictures that are covered by copyright. The change could help publishers, photographers, and artists get in front of their audience, while also helping users find images that they have a right to use.

Images with licensing information provided by the publisher will now appear in search results with a “Licensable” badge over the thumbnail. Clicking on that image will then bring up its licensing requirements and a link to where you’re able to buy rights to it, if necessary.

Google today announced a number of improvements to its core search engine, with a strong focus on how the company is using AI to help its users. These include the ability to better answer questions with very specific answers, very broad questions and a new algorithm to better handle the typos in your queries. The company also announced updates to Google Lens and other Search-related tools.

Most of these are meant to be useful, but some are also just fun. You will now be able to hum a song and the Google Assistant will try to find the right song for you, for example.

As Google noted, 1 in 10 search queries is misspelled. The company already does a pretty good job dealing with those through its “did you mean” feature.
Now, the company is launching an improvement to this algorithm that uses a deep neural net with 680 million parameters to better understand the context of your search query.

Another nifty new feature is an integration with various data sources, which were previously only available as part of Google’s Open Data Commons, into Search.
Now, if you ask questions about something like “employment in Chicago,” Google’s Knowledge Graph will trigger and show you graphs with this data right on the Search results page.

Back in May, Google announced that it will soon factor page speed and other metrics that capture the end-user experience when ranking Search results. This change is now set to come into effect a year after plans were first detailed.

These Core Web Vitals capture the end-user experience, especially on mobile devices, and serve to provide a “holistic picture of the quality of a user’s experience on a web page.”
Starting in May 2021, those three performance metrics will be added to how Google ranks Search results. It joins existing factors like mobile-friendliness, safe-browsing, HTTPS-security, and intrusive interstitial guidelines. Since launch, site owners have moved to follow Core Web Vitals:

In the past several months, we’ve seen a median 70% increase in the number of users engaging with Lighthouse and Page Speed Insights, and many site owners using Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report to identify opportunities for improvement.

To highlight pages with optimal performance, Google is planning to “test a visual indicator that highlights pages in search results that have great page experience.” It’s not clear what design this will take, but testing will start soon. If successful, it will also launch in alongside the main change.

Similarly, page speed metrics will be factored when ranking what news content appears in the Top Stories carousel/list on the mobile web. This change also comes into effect next May.

On results, the snippet or image preview helps provide topical context for users to know what information a page can provide.

Google Search is perhaps the most-used tool on the web today, and as such the company is always experimenting with new ways to improve it. This week, Google Search is testing a slight UI tweak that shows image previews when you hover over a link.

Showing up now for some users in private browsing modes, this new UI tweak for Search looks normal at first glance, but it can provide a bit more detail without leaving the search window.
The new test can show a larger text preview and, in some cases, image previews from an article directly from Google Search when you hover over the link.

We were able to trigger the mode in Chrome’s incognito mode earlier today, but in the hours since it has disappeared. Some users on Twitter also discovered the new UI. It’s unclear if this will roll out publicly at any point.

Google is redesigning how search results look on mobile, the company announced in a blog on Friday. “We wanted to take a step back to simplify a bit so people could find what they’re looking for faster and more easily,” Aileen Cheng, who led the redesign, said in the blog.

The redesign will have larger and bolder text that’s intended to be easier to scan quickly, and you’ll see more of Google’s font in results. Search results will also take up more of the width of your screen, thanks in part to reduced shadows. Google also says the redesign will use color “more intentionally” to help highlight important information without being distracting.
