    Hi G. Congrats
    You have a firewall.
    Look around.
Speaking of Windows 10- I upgraded 5 computers between Jan 15 and Jan 16. Piece of cake.
    Yes, they are all mine.
Yes, I am a computer nut.

    It's supposed to be good.
I use ESET Internet Security which has a built-in firewall.

you dont need nothing else than windows defender and windows firewall.

Defender includes anti-ransom, anti-exploit and ofc pua/pup security, cloud and online check (submit samples). 1909 should have a switch in settings, otherwise use powershell
    Code:
    Set-MpPreference -PUAProtection Enabled
    and off
    Code:
     Set-MpPreference -PUAProtection Disabled
this setting will warn about online downloader software with adware.

the windows firefwall has its own dialog -> "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security"
    https://www.howtogeek.com/school/windows-network-security/lesson5/
although its very easy once understood it looks first time very uncomfortable.
    reason for this one https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/windows-firewall-control-wfc-by-binisoft-org.347370/
    its ok.

before installing any software causing trouble you should really try those. but from my and other experience you should stick with it - all others will cause issues sooner than later.

    Hi Joe,
May I ask you some questions?
    - Were you running Win 7?
    - When you were upgrading to Win 10, was ESET Internet Security running? Or did you do a clean install of Win 10?
    Thanks.

Yes, I had Windows 7 on all of the computers.
Re: ESET - I paused protection for 4 hours.
I also turned off SAS , Malwarebytes and anything else I could.
I did 5 computers in one afternoon/evening and the next one the next morning.

i did an upgrade from win8, removed it, did a clean install and restored my win8. so i can not tell fromy my own about upgrades but in the last weeks i read about lots of problems about refused upgrades because win7 was broken. its a lot of work to repair it but in most cases it repaired win7 but still refuse the upgrade. thats why i always recommend a clean install anyhow beside win7/8 and to swap personal data or documents to the new windows. the "old" windows at least work, dont fix it if it aint broken - use it as a functional backup to get familiar with windows 10.

thats one reason to stick with the windows given security, there is a lot of fud on the run about defender while it got best scores in any tests. ESET should have less impact on the system, but avast, avira, gdata, kaspersky really have - dismissed updates, malfunctions and more - in special for browsers. and they all do NOT warn about adware in its standard settings, thats why i gave you info/code above to enable it in defender.

Did you create an outbound rule to allow them in Windows Firewall?

I've used Windows Firewall Control since its inception. It absolutely does have a learning mode. You can also add allow/block to the right-click context menu to easily allow a programs executable internet access. :):thumb:

I will be finally caving in and going to win 10 over the next year or so across my devices.

But I will be using LTSC, I just cannot wrap my head around forced major OS updates every 18 months, that to me is insanity.

Hayc59, re:Windows Firewall Control (WFC) from Binisoft (now Ma;warebytes) See below, Learning mode in 'notifictions' section. You can also use the two icons lower left, click to review the rules for applications, click line to edit, the other one lists connections allowed or blocked, again click the line to edit the rule much like outpost & change blocked to allowed as desired. You can also use the settings to add wfc to the context menu, right click any exe in explorer lists and choose allow or block to produce a generic rule for it. WFC is as close as I could find to our beloved Outpost. learning.JPG
