While the library doesn't impress, the price does: most options for streaming movies online require a subscription fee, but The Roku Channel is free. Instead of setting up recurring credit card payments, you'll be watching ads during your films, so it's similar to watching movies on broadcast TV—albeit with the user data collection model now common for many Internet services.

Roku expands its free streaming channel with entertainment and live sports

Roku launches premium subscriptions for Showtime, Starz, and other services today

Today, it’s kicking off that effort. Customers will be able to pay for the monthly subscription charges through their existing Roku account — keeping everything on one bill — and content from each provider will be accessible inside The Roku Channel.

Premium subscriptions begin rolling out today in the US, according to the company:

All supported devices are expected to receive the update in the coming weeks, beginning with Roku players and concluding with Roku TVs.
Customers can check if their device can access Premium Subscriptions by launching The Roku Channel from their Roku device. If the device has received the update, a new row called “Premium Subscriptions” will be visible below the Featured row.

Though Roku is best known for streaming free movies and TV shows using an ad-supported model, at the start of the year the company expanded its popular Roku Channel to include premium content as well.
Viewers can get a taste of shows like Heartland or Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries with no subscription required.

Roku didn't state exactly how many episodes would be available for free from each show, nor did it list the full selection of shows that would be included in the free content. So you'll have to do some digging to see if there are episodes which interest you.

If you were hoping to use the Fox Sports app to stream the Super Bowl on a Roku this weekend, you may need to start making other plans. On Thursday evening, Roku sent an email to customers alerting them that starting tomorrow, Jan. 31, it will be removing the Fox app from its platform.

"On January 31, 2020, all standalone Fox channels will no longer be available on Roku streaming devices," the company wrote in the note.
At issue seems to be the distribution agreement between Fox and Roku to carry the broadcaster's apps on Roku's platform.

Fox, which previously touted Roku on its website as one of the ways to stream the Super Bowl in HD and 4K, has removed all references to Roku with a noticeable gap on the page where the Roku logo used to be.

For the first time, Roku has found itself in a heated carriage dispute that’s very familiar to cable providers, but less often associated with tech companies. Yesterday, the conflict between Roku and Fox spilled out into the open, with Roku emailing customers to announce that all of Fox’s standalone channels would abruptly be going away on January 31st.

With virtually no notice, Roku has kicked Fox Now, Fox News, and Fox Sports (among others) off its hugely popular platform. The removal comes just days before Super Bowl 2020, which Fox is broadcasting this Sunday night.
Now, Fox is striking back in another way: through its Fox News talent. Fox News hosts and contributors including Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Jeanine Pirro, Tomi Lahren, and Tammy Bruce have all tweeted out the same message imploring their fans to voice their displeasure with Roku and demand their channels back.

“Why is Roku threatening to take away the FOX News app? We don’t know either,” the message reads. “Tell Roku hands off your device, and to put you ahead of their business interests.”

It’s still possible that the two sides will work something out prior to Sunday. But Fox is now using some of its most recognizable personalities to send a very clear message to Roku that it’s willing to keep fighting this one out.

Roku is expanding its free Roku Channel service today with the addition of 100 live channels housed in a new program guide. It offers linear programming from categories including news (ABC News Live, Reuters, Newsy), kids (Teletubbies, Kidz Bop), lifestyle (Bon Appetit, Bob Ross) and sports (Bein, Outside TV).

In order to watch the new channels, Roku Channel has added a "Live TV" tile at the top of the app. You can also press the left arrow to access the guide from within any screen of the app.
The guide offers 12 hours of data. Press the star button to switch the guide between All Channels and Recent Channels.
