Amazon exec tells employees that Go stores will start accepting cash to address ‘discrimination’ concerns

Amazon’s Steve Kessel, who runs physical stores, said last month that the company plans to add “additional payment mechanisms” to its Go stores.
A spokesperson confirmed Kessel’s comment but didn’t provide a time frame for the change.

Amazon launched its high-tech Go convenience store a year ago, where shoppers can pull items off the shelf and walk out.
Now it’s adding a decidedly low-tech feature: accepting cash.

The company, facing a backlash from those who believe cashless stores discriminate against the poor, confirmed last month that it was working on a way to accept dollar bills and coins.
After shoppers grab what they want off the shelves, an employee will scan each item with a mobile device, take the cash, give customers their change from a cash drawer and hand them a receipt.

Cameron Janes, who oversees Amazon’s stores, says the way it accepts cash could change in the future, but declined to give details.

According to documents from 2018 viewed by The Information, Amazon planned to open 56 Go stores by the end of this year and 156 by the end of 2020, but so far it has only announced 18. Just 15 of those are open to the public and are only located in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle. Since the documents reviewed by The Information are reportedly from last April, it’s really hard to say why Amazon might not be sticking to its original plan — but we can speculate at a few potential reasons.

The self-contained digital shop concept is just 14sqm (150sqft) in size and can be transported for relocation on the back of a lorry.
It uses a combination of cameras and weight sensors to track customers’ purchases as they move through the store.

There have been plenty of rumors about Amazon's plans to shake up the grocery industry with cashierless stores. The latest is that Amazon plans to launch checkout-free supermarkets in the first quarter of 2020. The company may also license its Amazon Go cashierless tech to other retailers, a person close to the project told Bloomberg.

That said, it's unclear how exactly Amazon will make that model work with the many items in a grocery store that need to be weighed before purchase, like fresh fruit and vegetables. But last month, Amazon confirmed that its engineers are testing Go tech at a 10,400-square-foot retail space in Seattle.

A patent filing first submitted last year and spotted by Recode shows that Amazon is trying to patent a technology for identifying people by scanning their hands.

The technology would analyse characteristics such as wrinkles and creases along with deeper structures including veins, bones, and soft tissue. It would then upload the image to a database, and use that image to identify a person by their hand.
According to Recode however this new patent could have particular relevance for Amazon’s cashierless brick-and-mortar Amazon Go stores.

The patent does not explicitly mention Amazon Go, but says the technology could be useful for identifying visitors to „stores, libraries, hospitals [and] offices.“ Recode notes however that a large number of the inventors listed on the patent work for Amazon Go. The new hand-scanning technology could give Amazon a new sensor to install in its cashierless stores.

According to New York Post, Amazon is testing a payment system codenamed "Orville" that scans human hands to ring up purchases. The e-commerce giant is reportedly using its New York employees as guinea pigs by installing the system on a handful of vending machines selling chips, sodas and phone chargers in its offices.

The company's technology uses computer vision and depth geometry to identify the size and shape of your hand before charging the credit card you have on file.

Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-N.J.), who introduced a bill this year that would prohibit retail businesses from refusing cash payments, argued that Americans should be able to decide whether they want to use cash.

Amazon is getting more serious about its brick-and-mortar retail ambitions with its first-ever Amazon-branded grocery store. The store opens today in Seattle’s Capitol Hill district, confirming reports from last year that Amazon was developing a more ambitious version of its cashier-less Go model.

The new store, which The Verge toured late last week, is indeed modeled after a standard Amazon Go location, but it has been expanded to include a wide array of grocery items you’d find at, say, Amazon-owned Whole Foods.
In fact, the store does source a number of its items, including some produce and meat and other fresh food, from Whole Foods suppliers. It also carries Whole Foods’ 365 brand for certain items.
It joins the nearly 20 Go stores currently open throughout the country in cities like New York and San Francisco.

This grocery effort is starting small, Amazon’s Dilip Kumar, the company’s vice president of physical retail and technology, tells The Verge. Kumar says Amazon has no immediate plans to open more grocery stores.

You'll find the store, a CIBO Express Gourmet Market, at Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal C, with more locations to follow. When you visit the store, you'll be able to buy food and drinks without interacting with a cashier.
OTG, the company that owns and operates the CIBO Express Gourmet Markets chain, says it plans to deploy the technology at additional stores located at LaGuardia and Newark airports.
