5G launched in the UK last year and now, at the start of 2020, all four major UK networks -- EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three -- offer it but to vastly different extents. To see exactly how the networks are performing, what speeds to expect and the extent of coverage, I toured the UK to test 5G in five major cities: London, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.

By combining the averages from all of my tests across the country, Vodafone has, on average, the highest 5G speeds in the UK with 203Mbps down. EE is just behind with 194Mbps. O2's average of only 86Mbps is a bit of a letdown.
EE did, however, achieve the fastest single speed in the country with 576Mbps down in one location in London, beating Vodafone's 450Mbps and O2's 232Mbps there.
Which is the best network for 5G in the UK?
Right now it's a two-horse race between EE and Vodafone.

Local telcos StarHub and M1 on Thursday (Jan 23) became the first to throw their hat into the ring in a joint bid for a licence for the upcoming ultra-fast 5G networks, more than three weeks before applications close.

In a joint media statement, the two firms said that they have signed an exclusive agreement and are working towards the closing date to submit their 5G proposals.
The closing date is Feb 17, 2020, an extension from the original deadline of Jan 21 to give operators more time to submit their proposals.
He also added that at least half of Singapore will have 5G coverage by the end of 2022 and that IMDA will allocate up to four 5G networks for mobile network operators, instead of the two originally planned.

The Czech Telecommunication Office (CTU) is planning an auction of frequencies in the 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands this year to boost competition in a market where high prices have long been a gripe of customers and politicians.
However, CTU chief Jaromir Novak said the government had made some last-minute changes to the conditions of the auction that he feared could put off bidders and delay 5G technology.

Verizon and esports company Dignitas partnered to launch the nation's first 5G esports training facility, the 5,500-square-foot Verizon 5G Gaming Center at Verizon's 5G Lab in Los Angeles.

Verizon and Dignitas will use the Verizon 5G lab to identify and develop ways Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network can enhance player performance, improve recovery, and enable players to connect with fans in new innovative ways.

"With 5G's fast speeds, high bandwidth and low latency, players will be able to do things like stream high-quality gameplay essentially in real-time, stay connected with fans on-the-go, and experience console quality multi-player gaming on their phones," said Nicki Palmer, chief product development officer at Verizon, in a release.
The new facility marks the latest in Verizon's 5G push for fan connectivity. Fans want to use their mobile phones during games to upload images to social media, stream video, and watch instant replays.

Verizon said its customers in Miami with capable 5G smartphones can access its 5G Ultra Wideband network in places like Miami’s Bayfront Park, home of Super Bowl Live Presented by Verizon, and Hard Rock Stadium, the site of Super Bowl LIV, as well as around the airports and in parts of downtown.

The company said this will be the first time customers will be able to access a commercial 5G network with a commercially available 5G device inside the stadium during the Super Bowl.
Verizon said it invested over USD 80 million dollars to enhance its network to support the Super Bowl in 2020. These permanent network enhancements will benefit Miami residents and visitors for years to come.

Beginning 25 January, Verizon is showcasing 5G and other Verizon-powered experiences at the Verizon 5G Stadium at Super Bowl Live site in Miami, which will be open to the public through 1 February. Orange, France’s biggest telecoms company, said it had chosen Nokia and Ericsson to deploy its 5G network in mainland France.

“For Orange, the deployment of 5G represents a huge challenge and is one of the main priorities of our Engage 2025 strategic plan,” said Orange France CEO Fabienne Dulac.
Nokia will provide Orange, for a broad part of France, with a range of products and services from its end-to-end 5G portfolio, including Single Radio Access Network (RAN) technology, advanced automation tools, a network management solution and associated professional services.

Ericsson 5G RAN products and solutions from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio will be deployed in the Orange network in the North-East, South-West and Ile de France/Paris regions of France.
Deployment will begin as soon as possible so that the Orange France 5G network will be ready to launch 5G services when the frequencies are made available during 2020.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai on Thursday proposed $9.7 billion in incentive payments to accelerate the freeing up of spectrum in the key C-band by shifting existing satellite users.

The telecommunications regulator had told lawmakers last month it was considering proposing “single-digit billions” in payments. Major satellite firms, including Intelsat, are expected to back Pai’s proposal to shift them to different parts of the spectrum band, a person briefed on the matter said.
Pai said in a speech on Thursday he backed the accelerated relocation payments to “make available the C-band for 5G deployment as quickly as possible” and to “align the satellite companies’ private interests with the public interest.”

Last year, the mobile industry heralded dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) as a “game changer” for 5G rollouts, enabling cellular towers to split 4G spectrum into separate 4G and 5G signals to service new and old devices. Now T-Mobile is suggesting that DSS might not be ready for prime time — an issue that could seriously affect some carriers’ 5G rollouts — though larger rival Verizon is contesting its claims.

DSS made headlines by promising to address one of 5G’s biggest challenges: the lack of additional 5G-specific low and mid band spectrum, otherwise known as “sub-6GHz” frequencies.
During a quarterly financial results conference call with analysts this week, T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray said that unnamed tower hardware vendors have run into real-world problems that may delay DSS’ use in 5G networks, thereby stunting the growth of 5G services.

Verizon spokesperson Kevin King downplayed Ray’s comments today to VentureBeat, saying “Neville Ray and T-Mobile seem pretty preoccupied with our 5G network. It must be because their 5G network can’t even match the performance of our 4G network. We’re confident in our 5G strategy and execution plan, and we’ll keep the commitments we have made to our customers.”

Yesterday, Samsung finally took the wraps off the Galaxy S20 series.
As with a lot of the phone launches we’ll see this year, 5G was mentioned a lot. To go along with that, AT&T and T-Mobile are expanding their 5G networks.

AT&T has added Gila County, Ariz., Hartford, Conn., Kalamazoo, Mich., Kansas City, Mo., Macon, Ga., Newaygo County, Mich., Northeast Penn., Salem, Ore., Spokane, Wash., Worth County, Ga. and York, Penn. T-Mobile has added a whopping 95 cities and towns.
Low-band 5G has the advantage of being available in many places that LTE is already present. The downside is it’s not as fast as mmWave, which can get up to 700Mbps.

Now Ericsson says its latest 5G hardware will be able to transfer a full hour of 4K video in as little as 14 seconds, with consumer availability coming later this year.

Ericsson engineers in Kista, Stockholm hit a download speed of 4.3Gbps, flying faster than Huawei’s October 2019 rate of 3.67Gbps, and coming closer to the theoretical 7.5Gbps download peak of existing 5G chips.
It’s important to note that the Ericsson and Huawei numbers aren’t an apples-to-apples comparison.

The firm is the last of the big four UK networks to introduce the next-generation wireless standard to smartphones, which was due to arrive by the end of 2019.

Consumers worldwide appear to have one big fear about the coming technological revolution in superfast wireless: 5G could be a harbinger of hacking and greater loss of privacy.

But according to a new POLITICO/Qualcomm 5G Global Survey of people in the United States and 10 other countries across Europe, Asia and South America, a global divide exists on how willing people are to accept a lessening of privacy in return for a new era of superfast networks and interconnected devices.

In the US, only 21 per cent of consumers surveyed would accept lower privacy standards in exchange for superfast speeds, which under 5G are expected to be up to 100 times faster than current speeds.
But consumers in China, India and Brazil expressed much greater willingness to make such a trade-off, a sentiment expressed by 64 per cent in the first two countries and 61 per cent in Brazil.
The results show widespread expectations among worldwide consumers that 5G will change their lives – in ways both good and bad.

The long-term framework deal enables Three to uses CityFibre’s growing national full fibre network to support its roll-out of 5G services.

Three will also have access to CityFibre’s full product portfolio, including small cell access points throughout its city-wide networks, providing local fibre capacity to support 5G services in busy urban areas.

“A competitive fibre backhaul market is critical for the fast and efficient roll-out of 5G,” said Dave Dyson, CEO at Three UK. “CityFibre are aggressively rolling out fibre across Britain and our strategic partnership with them will use the UK’s largest 5G spectrum portfolio to deliver the fastest 5G network nationwide.”
