360 Total Security Essential was released first. It was original called 360 Internet Security. Also, it is updated less frequently than TS is. There have been 21 product updates for TS this year, but only 3 for TSE.

The actual version numbers are a bit misleading, as the first version of TSE was v2 and for TS, it was v4.
Here is explanation of why they are not tested.

Well you can see from tests in the malware Hub at Malware Tips, that it does not do so well. However, by looking at VirusTotal scans of recent malware, it is almost always one of the first antiviruses to detect new threats. It is let down by its behaviour blocker, which could be better, but is definitely not the worst.

21 updates for TS VS 3 for TSE. Roger has proved his point as far as I am concerned. 10Q, Roger!

I believe the 3 labs, not Qihoo.

"Not the worst" -- not exactly a ringing endorsement. :isay:

That makes sense. However, of course Bitdefender can be enabled, even though it's not done by default. While you can't disable 360's own engine, it has not been giving me many false positives and it does seem to have decent detection rates. New malware is often detected by its own engine, rather than by Bitdefender or Avira.
Yes. If behavioural protection is important to you, then there are better options.

despite the bad customer support they have ( people are complaining about this also on the 360 facebook page ) and the many false positives it gives , it still is a super lightweight security product ( even lighter than eset and certainly kaspersky ) you can beef up protection with hmpa if you want to , these 2 really play nicely together.

I tried TS briefly, and didn't like it at all. Too much bloat for me, and used 2x+ the ram. I reinstalled Essentials, and have both Avira/Bitdefender sigs enabled.

I'm temporary trying 360 TS with avira engine: too much ads and bloatware but with little tweaks is reasonable.
Very light on my system, I like the Cleaning section, it detect things related old Windows Defender database others dedicated software (Ccleaner,Bleachbit, Cleanmgr+) not detected and help me to purge 500 MB of useless data.
But the main issue in the free version is database data, now is 25 november in EU end 26 november in China and database Avira is 24 november ... not the best in terms of security.

The signature updates are really slow. I'm using 360 Essentials, the Avira/Bitdefender dates are 20th/21st. I know if I manually initiate an update, I would likely get new signatures, but I am curious to see how long before it will do it on it's own.

2 things to notice after the upgrade to the latest version :

    * they seemingly removed the bitdefender scan engine ( avira engine is the only one showing )

    * they added QEX script killing engine :

" combined with 360 cloud computing script behaviour engine , quickly killing script viruses "

in the general settings tab you will find the following new enteries :

"automatically upload unknown or suspicious files to help improve malware protection "

    * 360 abnormailty sensing system is checked by default

If I check this, it is unchecked again, next time I open Settings. Maybe it requires a reboot. I had in enabled in previous versions.

notice how Tencent PC Manager is almost identical in many aspects to qihoo360, including the GUI when downloading a new file with wdsafedown.exe (in 360) which allows you to open a file location after its reputation has been checked

so I am receiving two warnings: it is the registry protection warning about modification of certificates of blackfog (its sys driver) and simplewall, it is curious since simple wall wasn't updating so to trigger this.
Are you experiencing similar behavior of 360 qihoo
a modified certificate can make it hard to identify a legitimate program on OS and its operations
