Another pretty intriguing rumor is that Samsung may be wisely backing off its original intention to release the Galaxy Fold with an eye-popping $2,000 price tag, which of course puts it immediately out of reach for most consumers. Not too much is known about the specs of the new Galaxy Fold at this point, though there’s at least one unconfirmed report that Samsung may release a variant with 256GB of storage — about half of the 512GB that was to have come with the original Fold, so that seems to be what will allow Samsung to offer a model at a reduced price, along with the more expensive version.

The launch of the successor device may, however, hinge on how well the Fold performs after its imminent launch, one of the people said.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) on Thursday said its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, will be available in South Korea from Sept. 6 with fifth-generation (5G) mobile connectivity.
The world’s largest smartphone vendor said the device would be priced 2.398 million won ($1,977.47).

The highly anticipated handset was originally due to hit the U.S. market in April but the launch was delayed by screen defects detected in samples.
The firm said it would offer 5G and LTE-enabled versions of the Galaxy Fold in select countries including Britain, France, Germany and the United States. It did not provide release dates.

It's good to see that the company was able to make improvements to the Galaxy Fold and ultimately launch it because it's still a futuristic kind of phone with a foldable screen, and now anyone who's interested in being an early adopter is getting a better device for their money.

Huawei may start to sell its Mate X foldable phone as soon as next month, said CEO Richard Yu in a briefing at IFA on Friday. Yu said he'd hoped the phone would be on sale already, but because of the rollout of 5G and the need to give app developers time to adapt their apps to the new screen size, it has taken longer than expected.

"Maybe next month we can start to sell it globally," he said on Friday. "The manufacturing of this phone is not only very expensive but has some challenges for volume and mass production."

I'll say it: The Samsung Galaxy Fold is not just a gimmick. I spent 30 minutes with the phone, finally released after months of controversy, and now I really want to buy one.
I was really concerned about the hinge at first, as this is the part that is most likely to be damaged over long-term use. During my time with the phone, though, it felt capable of surviving repeated folding and unfolding. But I’m not sure what happens if you drop the phone…

The redesigned Fold felt sturdier than before when we tried it at IFA, but it sounds like the tech giant still wants you to take extra good care of the device if you buy it. Samsung has published a new care guide video showing the model's features with instructions on what and what not to do when handling it.

It starts with a reminder that the Fold's display comes protected and needs no extra film -- one of the reasons why early units got damaged was because reviewers peeled that layer off. However, the video also advises potential buyers to "use a light touch." [...] and that you should keep it free of water and dust.
It's not quite clear why the company still wants you to protect it from dust and how it expects you to accomplish that.

The device also shouldn't be kept near debit or credit cards, which means you can't just dump it into your bag/purse with everything else.

The big picture: Samsung’s revised Galaxy Fold is scheduled to launch in the US on September 27. The foldable flagship has been overhauled to improve the screen’s durability but it’s the additional requirements / limitations that could end up being the biggest talking point surrounding its launch.

The Galaxy Fold will be available at select AT&T stores, select Best Buy locations and at Samsung Experience Store retail locations. Notably, Samsung won't ship the device to you – you have to go to a retail store to pick one up. Why is that, you ask? So Samsung can have the opportunity to educate buyers on how to properly care for the Fold.

This “onboarding experience” is only part of the Fold buying experience. As The Verge highlights, Samsung has packed multiple warning messages inside the retail Fold box (and during initial set-up) to remind you that it is fragile.
Last but certainly not least, Samsung is offering a one-time out of warranty screen replacement for $149 if you purchase your Fold before December 31, 2019.

Now, Huawei terminal customer service officer Guan Wei also confirmed the October release date for their first foldable smartphone, Mate X. However, Wei didn’t reveal the exact release date but hinted that Huawei is going to announce the official release date on the official website, forum site and official Weibo account.
Note, the Mate X will go on for sale in China in October and then later in November, the company is planning to go global with the foldable smartphone.

Interestingly enough, Huawei never mentioned the reason behind the delay in the launch, unlike Samsung.

Samsung’s new rebooted Galaxy arrives this week with one job: it just needs to not break.
Back in April, I was among the reviewers whose device worked perfectly well.

This time out, however, I wasn’t so lucky. I pulled the Fold from my pocket while standing in line at CVS after work the other day. I opened it up and spotted something new nestled between the lock screen’s flapping butterfly wings. There was a brightly colored, amorphous blob.
Still, it’s not a great look after about 27 hours with the device, considering that it wasn’t dropped on concrete, dunked in water or stepped on. And the placement smack dab in the center dampens the effect of a 7.3-inch screen.

It’s hard to say how widespread these issues are. When the device officially goes on sale in North America on Friday, there will be significantly more of these in the wild, at which point we’ll know more definitively whether this was a very specific anomaly.

Five months after originally planned, the Galaxy Fold goes on sale today in the U.S. The handset has had its share of set backs, of course. The first round ran into problems from several reviewers for a variety of reasons. And as I outlined yesterday, I ran into my own issues with the reinforced version of the handset.
Even in its current version, the Galaxy Fold is a fragile thing.

I’ll be giving more thoughts on my time with the product in an upcoming writeup. In the meantime, however, anyone thinking of plunking down the $2,000 and up needs to factor that into the equation.

CNET decided to put the Galaxy Fold through a folding torture test, and the phone didn’t quite live up to Samsung’s promises. The $2,000 device was placed into a machine that rapidly folded and unfolded it, and its display failed at around the 120,169 folds mark, if not a bit sooner.

When the Fold was announced, Samsung said it had “tested up to 200,000 folds” in internal testing. If you watch the company’s video of those tests below (for the original Fold model), you’ll notice that the device is being folded at a slower pace than the machine CNET used. Could that make a difference in terms of stress on the device? Probably.

First, although the phone fell a little short of the expectations Samsung set, over 100,000 folds means it’d last for several years based on how often people tend to check their smartphones daily, which is estimated to range anywhere between 80 and 200. But if you stick to the lower end, the Fold would survive over three years.
The most important point is that folding the Galaxy Fold isn’t the durability issue that you should be concerned about. It’s the device’s overall fragility.

Back in April, teardown site iFixit took an in-depth look at the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Following complaints and intervention from Samsung, however, the teardown was removed from the site.
Now iFixit has taken a look at the redesigned Galaxy Fold and, while it found that things have improved since the first version, there is still cause for concern. As well as pointing out that there are plenty of points of entry for dirt, dust and other debris, iFixit also says:

"You wouldn't even have to drop this thing to break it, meaning screen replacements seem inevitable, and that's a scary thought".
While Samsung has added new protective elements to the Fold's hinge, iFixit warns: "When closed, the screen is protected -- but the spine is still flanked by gaps that our opening picks hop right into. These gaps are less likely to cause immediate screen damage, but will definitely attract dirt".

The site found that Samsung seems to have implemented all of the suggestions it made in its original teardown earlier in the year. But the overall conclusion is that the Samsung Galaxy Fold is "alarmingly fragile".

While the launch of the Galaxy Fold may not have gone as smoothly as Samsung had hoped, the phone maker is in it for the long haul when it comes to foldable phones.
On Friday, GalaxyClub.nl spotted support pages on Samsung Africa’s site which made reference to an unannounced device with model number SM-F700F. SamMobile reported earlier this year that the next Galaxy Fold would carry that same model number, and these recently uploaded webpages seem to support that claim.

Galaxy Fold 2 leaks have been popping up at a fairly steady rate over the past few months. From previous leaks, we know that the foldable phone is codenamed Bloom and is expected to feature 256GB of internal storage and a totally refreshed design.
What is abundantly clear is that the Galaxy Fold 2 (or whatever Samsung ends up calling it) is going to be a departure from the phone that launched in September.

Samsung is working on a new foldable phone, to be released in February, and this one won't break the bank.
This is according to a report by The Korea Herald, which cites industry sources.

The new foldable phone will have a clamshell design, similar to the recently launched Motorola Razr, and a price tag of about 1million won or $845 — significantly less than the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which costs $1,980. It's due to be launched early next year, perhaps in February, alongside the company's upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S11.
This might make the launch interesting: If the report is accurate, the foldable phone might actually be one of the cheaper devices launched in February, as new Galaxy S phone is priced at around $1,000 at launch.

We've heard about Samsung's plans to possibly launch a clamshell foldable back in March, and then again in September.

The reinvigorated Galaxy Fold debuted in September and has since gone on to meet Samsung’s expectations with respect to sales. In fact, many enthusiasts might be surprised to learn just how many of the smartphones Samsung has sold so far.

While speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt in Berlin, Samsung Electronics President Young Sohn was asked about sales of the device. “And I think that the point is, we’re selling [a] million of these products," said Sohn. "There’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000.”
One million units might not sound like a lot in the grand scheme of things, but you have to remember that the Galaxy Fold retails for a staggering $1,980. So that fact that the company was able to get a million people to purchase what is by all accounts an expensive laboratory experiment is quite the feat.

Earlier today, Weibo user Wang Ben Hong shared five photos of what he claims to be Samsung's latest foldable prototype -- one that appears to be half the size of the Galaxy Fold.

There's no word on internal specs, but we can see the punch-hole camera right below the earpiece, and the lack of chin allows the unfolded screen to extend all the way to the bottom. Both characteristics match the clamshell concept art at this year's Samsung Developer Conference.
Wang didn't share further detail, but assuming that this prototype is legit, it'll be interesting to see how Samsung will position it as a product.

Either way, chances are this will be a slightly more affordable alternative to the $2,000 Galaxy Fold (or the $2,400 Huawei Mate X, for that matter).

Earlier this month we saw images of a foldable device with a clamshell design rumored to be Samsung’s next foldable phone. Now, to add a little more spice to this speculation, we ask: could this device also be using glass instead of plastic for its screen?

That’s what phone leaker Ice Universe claims, tweeting today that Samsung has created “an ultra-thin glass cover” for its next foldable, and pointing to the smooth and unwrinkled appearance of the screen of the unknown device as proof.

Samsung Electronics Co., sold at least 400,000 Galaxy Fold smartphones last year, the company's mobile business chief said Tuesday, denying earlier media reports that it sold one million foldable handsets.

"I think we've sold 400,000 to 500,000 Galaxy Fold smartphones," Koh Dong-jin, President and CEO of Samsung's IT & Mobile Communication division, told reporters at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 in Las Vegas.
Koh's comment confirms Samsung's earlier answer refuting media reports that the company sold 1 million Galaxy Folds in 2019.
