One tidbit that's come out is the hint that Apple could be getting ready to drop the Lightning port and switch over to the USB-C standard with the iPhone 11.
This could be a good move.

Now, what's interesting is that Apple has changed the image to show the connector going into the Mac to be USB-C and not the older USB-A connector. This makes sense since the new Macs only have USB-C ports. [...] There's also regulatory pressure from the EU on Apple to dump the proprietary connector [...]

Apple has already kitted out the new iPad Pro with USB-C, allowing it to have broader functionality. Making the switch to the standard on the iPhone would also make sense because it would bring with it a whole raft of new features.
It would also allow for the iPhone to be connected to gadgets such as storage devices and camera, improving workflow for professionals who rely on their iPhone as their main device when out and about.

Apple could ditch the Lightning connector on the highest-end versions of the iPhone in 2021, meaning the devices will require wireless charging, according to a report on Thursday from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF Securities.

The removal of the Lightning cable, along with other differentiating updates, will boost shipments and the average selling price of the high-end iPhone models, Kuo, a top Apple analyst, wrote. Without the connector, the top-tier iPhone would provide a “completely wireless experience,” Kuo said.
Speculation has been building for several years that Apple plans to remove the Lightning cable.
As far back as 2017, Kuo predicted that Apple would discard the Lightning connector in favor of the USB Type-C connector, which is widely used across the industry.

An even worse move than removing the headphone jack. While I don't use iPhones, unfortunately some Android manufacturers feel the need to copy whatever stupid ideas Apple implements.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that the company is gearing up to remove the Lightning connector from the flagship iPhone released in 2021.
We first heard rumblings about this happening in 2018, when rumors pointed toward the iPhone X having no ports.

Having no physical ports mean iPhones will have less moving parts and it can improve water resistance or make more room for a bigger battery.
Apple would not be the first to experiment with a portless phone: Other companies have shown off concepts, like the Vivo Apex from earlier in 2019.

Apple's been warming its users to a life without Lightning cables for a while now. First, the iPhone came with wireless charging, then the AirPods followed suit, and this year we finally got the USB-C to Lightning cable with the iPhone 11 Pro.
But there are problems with wireless charging.

In brief: Apple will reportedly stick with the proprietary Lightning connector on its next-generation iPhone instead of shifting to the widely used USB-C interface according to one tech leaker. If true, it likely means that Apple will never produce an iPhone with USB-C as next year's models are expected to go portless.

On Twitter, Fudge said it was a shame that the USB-C prototype iPhone 12s weren’t making it into production. Instead, we are destined for at least one more year of the Lightning connector. The leaker added that starting with next year’s models, Apple will move to a port-free design featuring a smart connector.
Apple reportedly hasn’t started developing this model yet but according to the leaker, the intended way to charge the iPhone 13 will be through traditional wireless charging.

The Lightning connector has graced each and every iPhone released since 2012 but we’ve increasingly heard rumors about Apple’s desire to move to a portless design. If Fudge proves accurate, that’ll happen in 2021.

When the European Commission pressured Apple to switch the iPhone’s Lightning port for USB-C on units sold in Europe early last year, Apple was able to hold its ground by pointing to the “unprecedented amount of electronic waste,” that would be created if “hundreds of millions of active devices and accessories” were rendered useless overnight.

Making the Lightning port obsolete makes a lot of sense for Apple: one less component to spend money on, one less item that takes space in the iPhone chassis, one less part to wear out over time, and one less point of entry for dust, liquids, and other gunk.

However, with the Lightning port gone, all Lightning peripherals and accessories will become dead weight, and that might be enough to discourage users with lots of Lightning peripherals from making the upgrade (even if Apple develops some sort of wireless connector for them).
