mediaTek To Release 5G Chipset In November

Mobile development company mediaTek finally announced their newest chipset for the smartphone market, a new SoC that will give support for the new 5G mobile network technology.

In a report by Gizmo China, CEO Cai Lixing announced that mediaTek SoC with 5G support will be available in the market during the first quarter of next year. This means users can expect new models from various smartphone makers sporting the new chipset capable of the highly-anticipated 5G technology around January to March 2020.
However, the aim of the chipset support would not be only for upcoming flagships. Lixing also revealed that they have worked on and will be launching both a mid- and low-range versions of the 5G chipset, making the technology available to all ends of users.

While no exact release date was given, users can expect mediaTek to make a more detailed announcement on the upcoming mediaTek Summit this November 26.
For their 5G technology chipset project, mediaTek worked closely with other top mobile companies such as China Mobile, Huawei, Nokia and NTT DOCOMO among others.

Telehealth has been a topic of conversation for about two decades, and now University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and BT have demonstrated that it is beginning to be a reality.

In the demo, clinicians were able to assess and diagnose a patient remotely – viewing medical records, taking vital signs and ultrasound scans – from a 5G-connected ambulance, provided by South Central Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust, that was located over two miles away.
Two scenarios were tested. In the first, the hospital-based clinician – a consultant in anaesthetics and critical medicine, wearing a specially equipped virtual reality (VR) headset – could visualise exactly what the paramedic could see in the ambulance.

In the second scenario, the clinician was able to use the BT 5G network to get a very high-resolution video feed in the ambulance in order to make a diagnosis on a knife wound.

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has returned serve to the myriad submissions made to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications Inquiry into 5G in Australia that state 5G is a health threat to humans and fauna.

"Higher frequencies do not mean higher exposure levels," ARPANSA bluntly stated in its submission.
The agency stated that while the frequencies used in 4G and 5G mean some energy is absorbed into the body, it is too low to create any "significant heating of tissue", and the higher millimetre-wave frequencies set to be used for 5G in the future do not "penetrate past the skin".

Tire manufacturer Pirelli is bringing its own approach to connected car technology, debuting what it's describing as the worlds first intelligent tires that transmit data via 5G.

The Cyber Tire system works by collecting data from a vehicle as it drives, such as whether there is water on the road that could cause aquaplaning. This data is sent from the vehicle to a central hub via 5G, which enables low latency transmission. Then, data on current road conditions and aquaplanning risks can be sent to other cars in the nearby area, also via 5G.

Pirelli debuted the connected tire at the "5G Path of Vehicle-to-Everything Communication" event in Turin, Italy this week, along with partner manufacturers Ericsson, Audi, Tim, Italdesign and KTH.

Verizon has finally provided maps showing where its 5G service is available, more than six months after first launching the service in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis. The maps show which city landmarks 5G is available near, and when you click on a neighborhood it'll show you a street-by-street view.
According to the new 5G maps, it's also coming soon in Cincinnati, Kansas City, Charlotte, Little Rock, Cleveland, Memphis, Columbus, Salt Lake City, Des Moines and San Diego. Verizon had previously promised to turn on 5G in 30 cities in 2019.

T-Mobile's outgoing CEO John Legere took credit for Verizon's 5G maps, after his carrier launched a "verHIDEzon" smear campaign in September criticizing the lack of transparency. At the time, Legere published a blog post asking Verizon to "stop hiding."

"Looks like Verizon listened to us and *actually* did the right thing for its customers and published 5G maps! It only took us *cough, cough @verHIDEzon* putting ads up all over NYC and demanding they do more for their customers!" Legere tweeted Tuesday.

The head of Nokia’s software business Bhaskar Gorti defended the Finnish mobile network maker on Wednesday against market fears that it is lagging behind its peers Ericsson and Huawei in 5G development.

“I don’t think we have a 5G problem,” Gorti told Reuters in an interview, calling its development a marathon where a lot of focus had been put on the first ten minutes of the race.
Last month Nokia cut its outlook for this year and next because of the need to step up its investments in 5G - news that knocked a third off its share price.

Nokia was wrong-footed by waiting for 5G radio standards to enter force late last year, while rivals were quicker to revamp products in anticipation of early rollouts in the United States and Korea, industry sources and analysts told Reuters.
“I personally think we have an at least 2 to 3 years or more lead on our nearest competitor Ericsson (in software),” he said.

AT&T is scheduled to fully launch its 5G network in the U.S. in 2020, but the company is speeding things up a bit by bringing 5G to "tens of millions" of customers in the coming weeks. [...] the company announced Friday.

It's important to note that this is real 5G we're talking about, not AT&T's 5GE which is essentially a rebrand of the company's 4G LTE Advanced, prompting Sprint to sue for false advertising.
And if you're still not confused enough, AT&T's 5G is also separate from the company's 5G+ service which is delivered over the mmWave spectrum (it means it's faster) to businesses in parts of 21 cities, with plans to reach parts of 30 cities in early 2020.

It waited to make the jump to 3G and 4G, and the company is taking a similar approach for 5G. While several of its rivals have already launched 5G phones, the iPhone 11 phones only support LTE, just like their predecessors. However, Apple is expected to adopt 5G as soon as next year. The same insider who said recently that all 2020 iPhones will sport 5G connectivity is back with a new prediction about next year’s iPhone lineup, revealing that the iPhone 12 — or whatever Apple ends up calling it — should support all 5G tech versions.

Networking and telecommunications giant Ericsson has released the much-anticipated update to its longstanding Mobility Report, revealing its latest forecasts for 5G adoption and availability.

In the refreshed forecast, Ericsson said it expects the total number of global 5G subscriptions to exceed 2.6 billion by 2025 and 5G to cover up to 65 percent of the world’s population in the same timeframe, by which point 45 percent of global mobile data traffic will flow through the next-gen networks.

“It is encouraging to see that 5G now has broad support from almost all device makers,” said Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson.

South Korean telco KT has succeeded in data transfer between its 5G network and a satellite, the company said.
The carrier performed data transfer through its network with the Mugunghwa 6 satellite, run by its affiliate KT SAT, 36,000 kilometres away in space.

KT will also be able to use the satellite as a back-haul when transferring media files to multiple devices simultaneously, and will also allow the carrier to provide more stable 5G services by grouping its network with the satellite.
For instance, automated cars or tractors operating in areas where 5G coverage is unstable or during environmental crisis can link to the satellite to continue operations, wherever they are.

Intel’s solution for 5G laptops? Team up with MediaTek

Now, the company has announced it’s working with MediaTek to bring 5G to Intel-powered PCs.

The two chip designers confirmed that the 5G modem for Intel-powered PCs will be based “in part” on MediaTek’s Helio M70 modem (seen above), announced late last year and found in its first 5G SoC for mobile phones.
Interestingly enough, MediaTek’s Helio M70 modem only supports the sub-6GHz flavor of 5G right now. It’s unclear whether this Intel/MediaTek solution will gain mmWave 5G support down the line.

Speaking of availability, the first Intel-powered devices with MediaTek’s 5G modem are expected to launch in 2021. Dell and HP are set to produce these laptops.
