If there are any $$ gains at all from this contest, most of it will go to the lawyers. "Sue" used to be a girl's name. Now it has become primarily a verb.

Oracle only bought out Sun Microsystems and Java so they could troll any copyrights and/or patents that existed. Oracle never had any intention of entering the smartphone market. Even Microsoft coulldn't pull it off.

I agree :(. Consider that today API not only means binary code (public classes and methods in Java, some fast searches suggest that extern in C is used for similar purposes), but also all that HTTP REST endpoints are also considered API...

    "Google Wins Java Copyright Case

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today in Google v. Oracle and sided 6-2 with the online giant in determining that its copying of Java code constitutes fair use.

'We assume, for argument’s sake, that the material [Google copied] was copyrightable,' the ruling notes. 'But we hold that the copying here at issue nonetheless constituted a fair use. Hence, Google’s copying did not violate the copyright law'...

[Oracle had alleged that Google 'copy and pasted 11,000 lines of Java code' in creating Android.]

"SCOTUS doesn't just rule in favor of Google in @googlevoracle, but says that API reimplementation is fair use *as a matter of law*, meaning that the decision applies to all APIs"

Great win not just for Google. It enables many companies to compete on the market by the means of better implementation or support. It is also reassuring for FOSS software that they can reimplement more features.
