Sling TV rolls out free content to non-subscribers, initially on Roku

Last year, Dish-owned streaming service Sling TV launched a free tier to its service designed to attract those with lapsed subscriptions to come back and watch. On Roku devices, former customers were able to tune into over 100 hours of TV shows and movies without a subscription by launching the Sling TV app. Today, the service is extending a similar offer to newcomers. On Roku devices, those who have never signed up for the streaming TV service will have the chance to browse and watch free shows, without the need for a subscription.

Caution is advised !

Sling TV is notorious for charging customers a monthly fee after their "free trial" expires despite those customers attempting to cancel their subscriptions.

If a credit card is required to sign-up for this free tier/trial, as is often the case for free trials -- stay away.

Sling today announced that it's bringing a bunch of free content to Android and Amazon Fire TV devices. that means no credit cards required. No Sling account sign-ups, even. Just load the app and start watching.

As you'd expect, the content is a bit limited. You'll be able to browse the "ribbons" (think menus) within the Sling app on Android phones and tablets, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV devices and Fire tablets. And whether you'll actually want to watch the free stuff is certainly a matter of taste [...]

The move to a smattering of free stuff is almost certainly in direct response to what Roku has done with The Roku Channel, though it definitely still pales in comparison to all the ad-supported shows, news and movies Roku is putting in front of customers. (And remember that you don't even need a Roku device to take advantage of that free stuff.)

The service has expanded its in-browser support to cover Chrome for Android in addition to the Sling Android app. Users can now view content on their Android device without the need to download an app. The service has worked on Chrome for desktop since 2017, but this is the first time it's been available on mobile Chrome.
Sling TV has added support for other platforms recently as well, including Apple's Safari browser, Android TV, Fire TV and the Oculus Go.

To stream Sling TV content through a browser, Android users need to have Chrome version 56 or later. They can visit sling.com to sign in and stream either live or on-demand content.

Hmmm. Under MYTV, scroll down a bit and look for "free" in the row titles.

Every thing I selected was sourced from Filmrise. They have their own app, so I don't see any need for this one. As usual in these free content apps, everything there is what I've already seen, never wanted to see or they'd have to pay me to see. Good for the under-30's crowd needing to catch up on a few decades of TV/film...

I wasn't all that clear in my reply. Sorry.

When I tried it, I could play free films and TV in the SlingTV app on my Roku without intervention by choosing as I described in #7. The FilmRise logo displays briefly before the movie or show begins.

FilmRise has two Roku apps, FilmRise and FilmRiseTV. FilmRise is its own concern.

I've seen that FilmRise logo display for movies and shows in Tubi and Pluto, if I remember correctly, and others I can't remember. IMDbTV, I think,

Otherwise, the Roku Channel, Pluto and Crackle are the only ones I have installed for the free channels class of apps. fuboTV, Prime and HBO streams 92.4¼% of the stuff I view.

Sling TV content is accessed on streaming devices by using the SlingTV app, currently on its Roku version.

On my Roku Ultra, I watched some of the free content by opening the app and clicking on the free stuff, again, as I described in #7. I can't say if ALL the SlingTV free stuff is FilmRise property.

The fuboTV apps for my Roku and Galaxy Tab and in www.fubo.tv on my PCs' browsers stream many FilmRise films and shows.

How various apps like SlingTV, Pluto,Tubi, Stirr and a boatload of other apps stream FilmRise property is pure magic! I'll leave it at that with confidence you'll figure it out eventually.

I open the Sling Channel on my Roku Ultra & I'm presented with a screen that offers Browse as a Guest. Selected Guest option & there's no Free. There's Free Trial but no Free.

I have the separate Filmrise Channel.

Are you talking about the Filmrise Channel not the Sling Channel?

This is as clear mud to me.

The Hubs already offer Google’s own YouTube TV service, but a subscription costs significantly more than Sling’s $25 starter price.
Sling TV, however, still starts at $25 / month for either its blue or orange channel packages.
The company is running a promo right now where you can get your first month for $15.

Nest Hub owners can already cast content from Chromecast-compatible apps on either smart display, but Sling TV hadn’t previously supported hands-free voice commands. Now, you can say “Hey Google, tune to USA on Sling” to hop right into live programming.

Today Sling TV raised their prices by $5/month, along with adding Fox News and MSNBC to the Sling Blue lineup. Big Ten Network (BTN) will launch on Sling TV ahead of the 2020-21 college football season.

Sling Orange and Sling Blue now cost $30/month each (up from $25/month) and the price of the combination of Sling Orange + Sling Blue is now $45/month (up from $40/month). The Total TV add-on is also increasing by $5, making it $25/month (up from $20/month). This is the first price increase subscribers have seen for Orange Blue. Sling Orange last saw a price increase in June 2018.
This is the statement Sling TV made following today’s price increase and channel update.

“Sling customers have been clear: they want more live news and sports, and they want a cloud DVR included at purchase – and we listened,” said Warren Schlichting, executive vice president and group president, Sling TV.

The five-day, $5 promotion comes as Dish commemorates the service’s fifth anniversary, deeming Feb. 9 as “National Cut the Cord Day.” The promotion lasts from Friday to Tuesday.

Dish executives see Sling TV as a potential aggregator for streaming services that want to make content available as a la carte additions to the linear service, according to people familiar with the matter
Dish isn’t interested in adding streaming services to its bundle if it will increase the base price, the people said.

Dish may also bundle Sling TV with its wireless service if a judge allows T-Mobile to merge with Sprint, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the company’s plans are private.

Increased competition in video streaming is causing Sling TV to lose subscribers.

In last year’s fourth quarter, the service lost 94,000 subscribers, Dish Network said in the company’s earnings report—the first time Sling TV has ever reported negative customer growth in a three-month period since it launched in 2015.
But customer growth has slowed. In 2019, the live TV service added only 175,000 new subscribers, down from the 711,000 Sling TV reported for 2017.

In December, Sling TV also announced a $5 price hike, which may have also led to a loss in subscribers, according to Sling TV President Warren Schlichting. Both Sling Blue and Sling Orange plans now cost $30 a month.

To help fight stay-at-home boredom, Sling TV has just launched a new "Stay in & Sling" promotion. It's a derpy name, but it means you can binge watch a bunch of streaming shows from your computer or Android device, which would usually cost you money, but right now, it's free.

To check it out, just fire up Sling TV in your browser, or start the Android app and tap "Watch Free TV."
Sling also offers plenty of B- and C-list movies for streaming, and free kids shows like Adventure Time.
We had some difficulty trying to access the free shows from the Android TV app right now, but they were easily streamed from both the desktop site and an Android phone. Chromecast streaming also worked.

Sling TV launched in 2015 and saw significant growth until 2019. In the fourth quarter of 2019, the streaming service began losing subscribers. That loss continued through the most recent quarter. At the end of March 2020, Sling TV subscriber numbers were down 4.7% from the previous year, at 2.31 million subscribers.

The recent Amazon announcement event revealed that several fresh features would be available on Amazon Alexa devices, including support for Sling TV, which is coming to all Echo Show ones. The new, wall-mounted Echo Show 15 will also include apps like Sling TV.

The live TV and streaming app will be found on all existing Amazon Echo Show devices, including the newest one, Echo Show 15.
Of course, you can add this app to your Echo Show device, but you need to be a Sling TV customer to access the channels and on-demand content.

The platform launched a beta version for its streaming app earlier this year, and it was available for Amazon Fire TV then, expecting to roll out to other devices in the future. The new version incorporates some significant design changes and upgrades the personalization engine to help the customers discover the content more easily, and it could be available for Echo Show sometime soon.
