    I think this is all pure nonsense, I remember like over 10 years ago you had 4 mega-pixel camera's and they made great photos. And now all of a sudden people are worried about picture quality.

    You simply get more pixels, so pictures may look "sharper" if you view them in a constrained frame, e.g. screen. But pixel to pixel, it's meaningless.

    I was long ago told that good optics are the most important part of a camera.
    'Incredibly detailed' implies quantity, but not necessarily quality.

    Two words: sensor size. Almost everything boils down to this. Larger sensors give a higher pixel size, and THAT is important for image quality. Now if you have two sensors of the same physical dimensions but one is 12 MP and the other is 16 MP, the 12 MP one is going to be better as the individual pixel size is larger.
