Just seeing how long everyones OS has been installed. I'm going on 13 months now. For a while there, I was reinstalling Windows or Linux twice a year.
Only 11 months. But I don't plan on reinstalling Windows for many years. My previous install of Windows, which I'm now running on another computer, was installed over 4 years ago.
Yes and it's not running very well due to the masses of software I have installed and uninstalled over the years. But it still boosts in a few seconds.
https://i.imgur.com/w4XSKPx.jpg But I moved my SSD from the old to the new PC in November, 2017 without reinstalling and it booted from it straight away with no obvious issues. It was a bit tricky to remove all ghost devices and orphans but it is working like a charm for almost two years.
8 years. Win8, upgraded to Win10. It's not slow at all. I'm due for new hardware, not an OS reinstall.
10 years on W7, big anniversary party this November 3 years on Manjaro KDE, as of this week 3 years on W 10
I have a mysterious restart problem that defies origin, explanation and fixes, starting w/ Windows 1809 (frozen black screen, no mouse every other restart. Like clockwork.). So this Windows installation is one month old.
stapp, you know not what you've done. --Clean installed Windows x2 --disabled Fast Startup/BIOS Fast Boot long ago. Re-enabled briefly to check. --Reset Windows x2 --installed another SSD which also became corrupted --reseated and repasted various internal components --changed around HDMI cable, plugged monitor into wall --sfc and dism umpty times --updated to latest chipset drivers --latest NVIDIA driver w/DDU --moved around various USB peripherals --changed to Balanced power plan --ensured latest SSD firmware and driver from Samsung --reflashed BIOS...twice --tried different mouse and keyboard --disabled/enabled BIOS NumLock, reset BIOS to defaults ctl/alt/del will enable to move past the screen. This past Windows install was an attempt to re-do the partitions as I thought maybe something was corrupted there. Wasn't successful. So, just kind of hanging there. May try a clean install of 1909 whenever it GETS here already.
Something similar to Roger in post #2. I freshly installed when 1809 was released about 11 months ago. Before that, this system was on 8.1, upgraded to 10 - so it was running for years. Other rig is a new one, so a couple of months on Windows 10 1903.
Well, if it didn't like me before, it probably can't stand me now, with all that torture trying to figure out the problem.
Why? Operating systems have not needed periodic reinstallations for years - going back to XP for Windows. It is just old wives tails that they need regular reinstalling to bring performance back up. In fact, it is dangerous to do this. Why? Because it puts the computer months or even years behind in security. And of course, all personal data and installed apps are wiped out (if the reinstall is truly "fresh"). And if the reinstall is done as a repair action, it often does not work. And if it does fix the problem, nothing is learned to prevent recurrence of the problem. Reinstalling the operating system should always be a last resort option. To answer your question, 5 systems here were upgraded to W10 when W10 was released in 2015. This computer was built new in Feb 2016 with a new installation of W10 Pro. None have needed or had the operating systems reinstalled.
~ Funny Image Removed As Per Policy ~ I could not agree more. It just looked like you implied that an 'enthusiast' should do reinstalls more often -
The laptop I am typing this on started with Windows 7. Then 8. Then 8.1. Then 10. I think Windows 10 was released in 2015. So the current OS? 4 years I guess. Last reformat? 2009.
Current: W10/64 Pro, 2015 W7/64 Ult. desktop (was Vista32 originally), 2007 W7/32 laptop, 2009 Most used Linux: xenialpup64, 2018 Other: Mint Tessa, 2017 Also have a T23 running Ubuntu (for one scientific application) since 2002. This little critter will never die.
