Tracked the article to this source - https://www.orientaldaily.com.my/news/entertainment/2019/10/09/309692 I remember watching 'Twin Peaks' series in the early 90ies, it had a similar plot vehicle in one of it's scenes in early episodes. Then I also believe I saw that trick in several other movies as well. So... if you ask, it looks to me like someone watched too many movies and then shamelssly invented the whole thing. Of course, I can't be sure of that (the whole story is kind of unfalsifiable) but I'm just not convinced.
Likewise, I'm dubious about this - I'm a photographer, and even with way better resolution than smartphones, it's not easy to decode the reflections in the eye. General shapes, yes, specifics, not so much. However, the general warning about information leakage remains valid. I recall that some people had been outed by pictures taken by their children and posted to social media, which divulged locations and what people were there. Or others when people were claiming to be sick or incapacitated and decided to post pictures of their holiday.
