Inactivated DarkLayer Guard On Thor Home / Foresight, so effectively this is disabled - except for 'X-Ploit Resilience' software update checks (dislike the 'fancy' naming  of these security components) - which I don't use either.

DarkLayer Guard seems to use Heimdal's own DNS server, and is a step too far in slowing down internet access on the (admittedly OTT) layered security on my test machine.

I have lifetime license(s) but thinking of ditching it. I have browsing security sufficiently covered by Firefox add-ons.

"Dark Layer Guard, "Thor", "X-Ploit Resilience" --- wow, sounds like an AV right out of the Batmobile -- Bam! Biff! Pow!!!:cautious::rolleyes:

    OP here. :)

It's been a while since I've checked Heimdal's website, but the last time, the explanations for their features weren't nearly detailed enough for me to form a clear idea of what exactly some of these security features do. (See posts early on in this thread.) Any understanding that I expressed back then regarding the explanations given by Heimdal personnel in the thread has since dissipated; maybe it's time to review but I do remember never being really all that clear about some of the features.

I do understand about the software updater and the DNS service, but about the rest of it I've never been sure.

One very positive word I can put in for Heimdal is that their technical support is excellent and every issue I've ever had with their software has been resolved swiftly and completely.

    Agreed. :thumb:
I was probably too hasty in my assessment here, because I am still getting delays / timeouts with some TLS handshakes e.g. on Wilders site on my test machine, even with Thor Home effectively disabled.
The search for the cause continues ... probably one, or combination, of Firefox add-ons.

Heimdal has an extremely annoying "feature" where it will block your access to certain websites that they claim "may trigger phishing attempts or contain malicious content which could affect your system." The problem is that, whereas Firefox (for example) will allow you to proceed anyway, Heimdal doesn't give you that option and the only alternative given on the warning page is to contact Heimdal support, which is a clunky approach at best.

Scans of the blocked URLs with VirusTotal and Sucuri SiteCheck have always come out clean, so the bits about "phishing" or about "malicious content which could affect your system" are questionable. Go ahead and warn me, but let me decide whether to visit the site or not.

You can unblock these URLs. DarkLayer Guard has a whitelist!

I have a feeling that Heimdal is a bit too bloated and it sounds really bad what you describe.

I agree. Over the years, it has taken on an increasing number of features and functions.

Also, I get the sense that the Heimdal product is more geared toward large organizations (governments, companies) than to individual users.

Yes, I'm very skeptical about these type of products that try to do too much.

Today I went to visit Heimdal's website and Bitdefender Free blocked it! :D

BD did allow me to click through the warning to reach the Heimdal page. Still, that was unexpected...

Well...has anyone actually done a test of Heimdal security or heimdal threat prevention? Until I see an uncut video of how well or not so well it does I don't know if I'll actually buy it

Not that I know of, but that doesn't mean that such tests have not been done.

If anybody has seen one of the AV testing labs include Heimdal in their report, please let us know!

Heimdal for the past several years has been using the Avira engine in its Premium version. Not sure if the latest version is still using Avira, but presumably it does.

Is that for the entire product or is the Avira engine only for the AV component?
