I suspect the amount of SBIE code used is around 0% and it only continues to exist due to some clause Invencia had added into the original agreement. Instead I expect it was InvenciaX, eg the corporate security software that was the reason Sophos added them to their hive.

It's not only malware that's at issue; the "trust no program" is fundamental, and both SBIE and Firejail on Linux give you the ability to configure sandboxes independent of the application writer. I value that tremendously, because it allows me to restrict access to the filesystem in a granular way and/or to the internet.

Usually, internet facing applications should not get any significant access to the "real" file system; and likewise, apps which see my real files (including local network shares) should not have access to the internet. SBIE does that, other solutions (apart from VM containerisation) do not, none of them.

Application writers pretty much always want internet access AND full access to the file system - this is against my interests.

The real problem is with the OS, which should allow data driven user-configurable sandboxes to enable isolation tweaking. For example, even with the recent Controlled Folder Access in W10, it does not allow you to create a matrix of programs and folders, it's one set of whitelisted apps, and one of controlled folders. Better than nothing but still much worse than SBIE.

Personally, I'm hoping Microsoft improves Windows Sandbox. Adds the ability to save your progress, track changes to the system, and the ability to use a darn VPN on the host and not have WS give up. Most importantly, the ability to start programs in the WS with a click or two in the host. Maybe even some kind of seamless mode, where you can run Firefox in WS and it will look just like it's run on the host.

That way, I can comfortably leave Sandboxie for something just as good, if not better.

    One can always dream though.

All of the features you like to have in your dream WS sound familiar, that's Sandboxie. :)

Well Sandboxie is IMO starting to look like a sinking ship. I wish that wasn't the case, but I can't help but feel disappointed with the responses on the Sophos forum.

@Beyonder - I recently had a look at what Windows sandbox is - as opposed to what I hoped it might be. What a let down, it's got a huge way to go and is much worse than SBIE or a decent VM hypervisor. Embarrassing really. Since we're talking MS here, they might get it usable in about 5 years.

Or they might make it like Windows Backup.

Even so, what you want in the WS is basically the same that we have in Sandboxie. Theres nothing wrong with that. It just proves that Sandboxie is the way a sandbox program should be (according to your taste and most sandbox program users). The features you want in a sandbox program is what most of us want. IMO, the Windows sandbox is going to be around for a little while and be discontinued. It wont last long. What we are saying here is proof that there is room for Sandboxie in the future, but unfortunately Sandboxie has fallen in the hands of Sophos. And thats a problem. It should be clear by now that, anything from Sophos cant be trusted. They have been lying to us Sandboxie users not since April, but I come to realize that it has been so since the day they purchased Invincea.

Now someone is going to learn how to code those lines. For its future development.

Does anyone have a twinge of conscience for deriding Sophos? Not I. This is good news but the delays and prolongations were not met with pleasant conversation. Personally, I'm going to wait a bit before reinstating Sandboxie, if at all. This was a little.....much.

The amount of info they want for the download is a bit much for free software. Anyway a 10 minute email address and an odd name took care of it.

I wonder whether they actually tried to sell it - which I think would have been the best outcome, given that it's going to be extremely hard to get significant development time from people with kernel mode driver skills (aka rocking horse......) - even if that's in maintenance mode.

so, that's just another way of saying "sbie's now officially abandonware, we don't want to waste our time and financial resources to maintain it any longer, because it's getting harder and harder to keep up with w10's constant updates and it doesn't pay off well for us any longer. so, here, it's all yours for the taking.".

That's more or less what they admit by themselves:
    But they also write:
So I think that this was a fair decision by Sophos and we (the Sandboxie users) have no reason to complain. :)

the point is, it's highly unlikely sbie'll see another update. so, it's technically an abandonware. it'll proly face various sw compatibility issues after a major windows update.

As long as it keeps working on Windows 7 I'm all in for the long haul. I'm still on version 5.30 and it works well on Win. 7, so will stay with it and see what happens down the road.

i see no reason for it not to. i mean, sbie v3 still works on xp. but hey, they're both obsolete piece of sw. so, it's at your own risk to keep using them.

I'm an old ex Jar Head (U.S. Marine) so I know all about taking risks. Out motto was " Improvise, Improvise"; as we all got the second hand crap that the Army would discard and hand it over to the Marines and we had made it work, combat ready. Thanks for the suggestion though, duly noted.

I'm thinking there will be a final service pack for W7, which spookily enough breaks SBIE....!
