The 'script' fix (VBA etc) may not/probably not be in the September Security-Only patch for W7/32 and 64, so if you need the fix, this appears to be the only way to get it.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/4517297/windows-7-update-kb4517297

    Available from the MS Catalog.

    Thanks @emmjay
I've been wondering about it too (will users of the Security Only updates get it in the September updates).

    Two links at gHacks:
Visual Basic issues in Windows August 2019 Updates
    https://www.ghacks.net/2019/08/15/visual-basic-issues-in-windows-august-2019-updates/

First updates released that fix the Windows VB bugs
    https://www.ghacks.net/2019/08/17/first-updates-released-that-fix-the-windows-vb-bugs/

For my Win 7 system I got kb4517297 from https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4517297
Already downloaded, not yet installed but will likely do so soon.

BTW: It wouldn't surprise me when several of Karen's older programs may be affected by this.
    https://www.karenware.com/powertools/runtimes
Some of them are rewritten by Joe though.

As pointed out in the post by JRViejo (above) you need this patch. This is a fiasco that was created by Microsoft. The MS recommendation does not work for everyone. Also, there is no clear explanation regarding W7 systems that do not have bitlocker - MS does not elaborate on this. One would assume that these systems were never offered the KB via WU - so I'd say, best not to download and install it. It may do no harm, but you never know with patches.

    https://borncity.com/win/2019/08/21/windows-7-reinstallation-causes-boot-error-0xc0000428/

Several users have stated that KB133977 will not install on their system - Google the KB and you will see the issues. It is curtains for them.:(
SHA2 is better than SHA1, but if this KB is returning this error code, forget it. Stay away from the August patches until the dust settles.

NB: The security-only August patch can be bypassed, however the monthlies are cumulative - no escape.

Well, on my Win 7 Pro 64-bit system it looks like I got no problems, in particular with respect to the postings #778 and #779
I just made a backup image with Macrium Reflect Home Edition 7.2.4325 and then (after some reboots) I restored it using the Macrium Reflect boot-menu environment.
(I use only full backup images, and I do it all manually).

As far as I can tell: zero problems.

Below is a list of the MS updates from August 2019 that I installed.
Usually I start with the off-line installers (from the MS Catalog) for the IE11 Cumulative update and the Security Only update.
Note in particular my remark at the end of the list that KB3133977 was already installed in March 2016 !!
The updates were installed in that order (except for KB3133977 which was already installed in March 2016 as mentioned).

    Here you go:

Thanks for that link @FanJ. I just now took the time to read through it - the same questions and concerns are raised there.

I see they tackled the 'no bitlocker' question - no clear answer though. On another tech site, a poster claims that if the system has bitlocker, but it is not activated (thus not changing the BCD), a reinstall of W7 from backup works just fine with the August patches. I think WU will have sent KB313397 to a system in 2016 whether or not bitlocker is enabled.

Sometimes patches do not always behave the same way on every system (no surprise there!).

I had posted a reply on it: #777
And I did install it on Win 7.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4517297/windows-7-update-kb4517297

But according to postings at AskWoody MS has re-issued that "script-fix".

    https://www.askwoody.com/2019/microsoft-re-issues-the-win7-vb-vba-vbscript-fixing-patch-kb-4517297/

    https://www.askwoody.com/forums/top...win7-vb-vba-vbscript-fixing-patch-kb-4517297/

The question is: is that true? It could be related to meta-data. I just downloaded it again from the MS Catalog for Win 7 64-bit. The checksums are the same as for the one I downloaded a few days ago.
I'll wait a little while but I may try to install this "new" one if I can at all....

Nothing enlightening in KB info. Must be metadata (but watch that space, they are tardy when it comes to info updating).

If the binaries are the same for both versions, you should not have to reinstall it.
MS does not use date as a measure of what's installed on your W7 system. It is the version of the binary they use.

    OK, thanks emmjay.

Both have the exact same checksums (MD5, SHA-160, SHA-256).
Both are digitally signed on the same day/time.

I tried to install the one which I downloaded today but couldn't as it was already installed (that's what I was expecting to happen).

All this talk about metadata .... I want exact definitions and I really mean exact definitions .... But that could be me ... Sigh

That is an indication that the binaries are the same (even though the KB number is the same).

A metadata change can effect the way a patch is installed - in other words, the process or instruction set, e.g. patch management if using SCCM.

August Security Monthly Quality Rollup kept failing to install for me on Windows 7 with error code 80092004. The machine already had SHA2 support previously, and the August updates also pushed another SHA2 update as a security update, but even after installing that first, it still failed, and all available important updates were already installed. I had to install KB4490628 for it to finally work.

Was KB4490628 already installed earlier (it was a March 12, 2019 update), or was KB4490628 not yet installed?

    Interesting!
    You mean this one:
    KB4490628
    Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1: March 12, 2019
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-for-windows-7-sp1-and-windows-server-2008-r2

    PS:
I had already installed it at 12 March 2019. Did you somehow missed that one or did you choose at that time not to install it? Sorry for asking!

    Edit: S-man beat me ;)

KB4490628 was a Service Stack update. Some updates won't install unless the Service Stack is up to date :(

I'm not sure if it was already installed. However, if I didn't install it, it is strange it wasn't offered anymore, especially if the August Monthly update needs it.

Had a hell of a time yesterday installing KB4512506 prior to today's updates. It failed twice with an Error code 80092004. After reading the Monthly Rollup verbiage, and although KB4474419 had been offered & installed prior, I went ahead and installed KB4490628, then I was able to install KB4512506. Mind you, I don't run any Symantec or Norton antivirus programs to prevent that install. Just FYI if someone else is searching for a solution.

Microsoft pulled this one for 64 bit systems or is not available for some reason...

Edit: tried once again at 6:15 pm and it is working now.

W7 (x86 only) Sept 10 patches: Provides protections against a new subclass of speculative execution side-channel vulnerabilities, known as Microarchitectural Data Sampling. If you were wondering what that is...

MDS follows in the footsteps of meltdown and spectre.

    https://www.thewindowsclub.com/microarchitectural-data-sampling-mds-vulnerability

AMD has taken the opportunity to remind customers (and potential buyers) that it doesn’t suffer from any of the vulnerabilities that have plagued Intel chips. In a statement in May 2019, AMD stated that its processors do not suffer from ZombieLoad or similar ‘MDS’ (microarchitectural data sampling) variants because they are protected at the hardware level.

I had to disable Kaspersky's real-time protection to be able to install the updates on 8.1 x64. It seems that the System Watcher is way too aggressive in Kaspersky Free 2020 (and in the free version you can't change the settings so the only solution is to disable the real-time protection when installing new software or updates). A bit annoying but I can live with it.

I don't use Kaspersky either, only MSE in that Win7 64-bit PC, and it's a bit strange that I had that issue. :doubt:
