After a week with the device, I was left with mixed feelings independent of the whole ongoing display saga. The TLDR; of it is the story of a first-generation device that’s full of promise but still a bit clunky and prohibitively priced.

In retrospect, the process of bringing the technology to market felt like a thoughtful, leisurely progression, followed by a potentially careless sprint the final few yards before the end zone.
Samsung, it seems, wanted badly to be the first to market with a consumer device. It’s a stumble, but as we’ve pointed out previously, Samsung’s been through worse. This isn’t the Galaxy Note 7 part two [...]

The broader question, however is two-fold:
• What will this mean for Samsung
• What will this mean for foldables as a category
The answer, I think is the same for both: not very much. Both the phone and the category will live and die by consumer demand, not some dumb stumble by Samsung.

The Galaxy Fold could have been a huge disaster for Samsung, but the tech giant was smart enough to postpone the launch of its foldable handset after reviewers found a bunch of critical issues that broke the screen.

But Samsung won’t cancel the device, a new report reveals, as it has fixed the issues and will soon announce a new release date.
The news comes directly from Samsung CEO DJ Koh, who told The Korea Herald that Samsung “has reviewed the defect caused from substances (that entered the device), and we will reach a conclusion in a couple of days (on the launch).”
“We will not be too late,” Koh said when asked whether the phone could hit US stores this month. The exec did not provide an actual launch date.

According to reports from South Korea, the release of the device has been pushed back even further, and may now only take place as far back as fall this year.
This is reportedly due to Samsung doing further testing on their fixes to the troubled device. The release was originally planned for June, but “stabilization work will be longer than planned.”

“As Huawei could not afford the folder in July due to US sanctions, Samsung Electronics could have a little more time to launch the Galaxy Fold,” an official noted.
We suspect it may be the case that Samsung will need to go all the way back to the drawing board and developer a much more robust design.

Now, Bloomberg reports that Samsung has finally completed its redesign, citing people familiar with the matter. As for specific tweaks? The company has apparently tucked the protective screen layer into the foldable’s bezels, making it “impossible” for people to remove in the first place.

Samsung reportedly redesigned the Galaxy Fold’s hinge too, as it hopes to eliminate the crease that forms on the display when it’s in tablet mode. More specifically, the hinge has been pushed “slightly upward from the screen (it’s now flush with the display) to help stretch the film further when the phone opens.”
Bloomberg‘s sources say Samsung hasn’t decided on a launch date just yet, but they claim that major Galaxy Fold components will soon be shipped to Vietnam for final assembly.

Should I buy the Samsung Galaxy Fold?

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is a bleeding-edge example of new technologies that is stunning on first glance. It is better than a prototype, but it’s also very much a first-generation device. We’re not sure whether to call it a smartphone or a tablet. The display on the outside of the Fold is comically poky and it doesn't fold flat but the inside is where the party’s at: that unfolded 7.3in OLED is stunning. But there is a notch and an always noticeable crease and bump.

Spending this much money on the Galaxy Fold instead of a smartphone is like buying a first-class train ticket. It’s a fancier seat, but the experience is basically the same as everyone else’s and it’ll cost you two or three times as much.

Samsung and Apple are both guilty of generating Kickstarter-style hype to sell us on a product before they can actually sell the product.
For starters, these aren't obscure startups looking for funding -- they are multi-billion dollar companies with tons of resources and a history of successful products.

But Samsung did something much worse. It put the Galaxy Fold in the hands of reviewers before it was ready and began pre-orders for consumers.
This problem certainly extends beyond Samsung and Apple, but they are the most egregious and high-profile examples of how companies are happy to sell us an idea before it's fully baked, inevitably causing more headaches for users when the idea backfires.

News publications, and in this particular case tech news outlets including CNET, relish every leak and rumor about a new product [...] This cycle of hyping up every rumor and leak makes it nearly impossible for companies to truly surprise us with an innovative, polished product out of the box.
