UPS has been quietly testing a program that lets the shipping service deliver packages inside multi-unit homes while occupants are out. The service utilizes smart locks created by Latch, a New York-based smart lock startup that teamed with Jet late last year.

The move is clearly an attempt for UPS to stay keep up to speed with Amazon, which began utilizing this sort of in-home delivery last year via Key (which has since expanded to cars), a program that utilizes Kwisket locks and its own Cloud Cam.

UPS is quick to note that the service only works with the building, rather than individual apartment units. The pilot system certainly makes sense for New York City, where multi-unit homes are far and way the majority. As someone who gets delivery attempt slips on a regular basis in the front of my building, I’m all in favor of this program — especially one that doesn’t give access to my actual apartment.

Amazon has concocted a new way for strangers to infiltrate your home and vehicle, all in the name of secure package delivery. The Key by Amazon service (formerly Amazon Key), which allows delivery drivers to unlock certain connected front doors and car trunks, will expand to include MyQ-connected garage doors in Q2 2019.

Key for Garage works just like Key for Home and Key for Car: An Amazon courier arrives at your home and scans your package, verifying he's at the correct location with the proper order.
The garage door opens, the boxes are dropped inside, and the door closes before the delivery person leaves.

UPS expands in-home delivery service to take on Amazon Key

The parcel delivery company partnered with smart lock startup Latch to create an Amazon Key-like service that allows drivers to leave packages inside your building. The companies recently announced the program is expanding to 10 more cities.

According to UPS, the Latch service will be available in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami, Seattle, and Washington, DC by the summer of 2019. The service is already operating to safely deliver packages in New York City and San Francisco.
“By expanding into these high density areas, more residents can benefit,” Jerome Roberts, UPS vice president of global product innovation, said in a statement.

“Smart access devices enable our drivers to enter buildings without keys and leave packages safely in lobbies or building package rooms. Customers who have used the service say it’s safe and easy for them. [...]"

Having a package delivered can be an exercise in unnecessary stress if nobody's home. Key by Amazon lets couriers drop packages inside cars or houses, and now, it's expanding to a very popular automaker.

Ford Motor Company announced on Tuesday that it has teamed up with Amazon to bring Key's benefits to eligible Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Amazon Prime's delivery service will be granted one-time access to a vehicle, allowing them to drop a package in the trunk and lock everything back up, giving that parcel a safe place to hang out during the workday.

Ford vehicles need to be from the 2017 model year or later, and it must be equipped with FordPass Connect, the automaker's connected-car service. Lincoln vehicles are limited to the 2018 model year or later, and they need to be signed up for Lincoln Connect [...]
Owners receive notifications before and after delivery, as well as confirmation that the car is locked. Access can be blocked at any time, and packages can be rescheduled for drop-off on a different day, need be.

In brief: Amazon caused a bit of an uproar when it announced that it would be giving customers the option to let delivery drivers drop off packages in their garages, but it seems the outcry wasn't enough to stop Amazon from expanding its "Key" service. As of writing, in-garage delivery is now available to Prime members in over 4,000 cities and towns across the US.

Given that Key was initially only available in 50 cities, this is a major service expansion -- "tens of millions" of Prime customers can now take advantage of it if they so desire.
That last part is important: Key is by no means mandatory. Instead, the optional in-garage delivery system is intended to give customers peace of mind and let them dodge porch pirates. With the holiday sales season quickly approaching, Amazon's timing here couldn't be better.

When your package arrives, the delivery "professional" will receive temporary, one-time access to your garage door. Once they do, they'll open up the door, set the package inside, and then close it again.
All drivers that participate in the In-Garage Delivery program must undergo extensive background checks, and they're instructed not to go any further than five feet into any given garage.
