win10 64bit ver 1709, 30g hard drive. as stated hard drive is full. ran mbam scans and removed couple of pups. ran disk cleanup several times and recovered 2 gigs but still not enough for windows to update to 1803. any suggestions what else i can uninstall. these small computers are not made for win10. if it was my machine i would put linux mx-18 on it. thank for your help.
You can enable drive compression to save some space, if it is not already enabled. https://www.howtogeek.com/266472/should-you-use-windows-full-drive-compression-to-save-space/ However, the reality is that the included 32GB of flash storage, is really not enough space to run recent versions of Windows. Even with a clean install of Windows, you won't have a lot of free space and a lot of that limited space will get used as you install software. While you can add a SD Card for extra storage, a lot of data will still be written to the internal flash storage (C drive), so storage space will still be an issue. Another problem is that 2GB of RAM, is not enough for Vista or any more recent operating system. Even if you've got very little running, memory usage will most likely still be very high. I've got a Stream 11, which I was given and it's really only useful for basic tasks. I would never buy a computer with that little storage space. In case anyone suggests upgrading the storage, you can't do that. On the Stream laptops, you're stuck with 2GB of RAM and 32GB flash storage. An option, may be to run a very light Linux distribution. I can't give any recommendations myself, but most likely someone else can give suggestions. A better option would be to buy a laptop with better specs. If your budget is limited, you can very good quality refurbished business laptops (e.g. HP's ProBook and EliteBook series), very cheaply these days.
yes, i agree with you. this is a friends machine. he should have bought a chromebook. hp and others should not sell such low end low spec hard drives. after first windows major update the hard drive is full. thanks for your reply
The reason that HP (and other manufacturers) sell laptops with 32GB storage and 2GB RAM is that they get a cheaper Windows 10 license. https://liliputing.com/2016/09/dont...ces-8gb-ram-specs-cheap-windows-licenses.html
spent several hours looking for items to delete and uninstall-2.9 gb was all i could fine.still not enough to install 1803. i'm just going to install OSarmor and voodooshield and tell my bud to buy a chromebook. HP & microsoft should be ashamed for selling a $200 paper weight. this computer is total crap.
I agree, but unfortunately for quite some time now, big brand names like HP, Dell and Toshiba have all been competing for the low end market and releasing laptops as cheaply as possible. An alternative to a Chomebook, would be a cheap refurbished Windows laptop. You can get something decent for under $200.
since these machines cannot be updated, who should be held responsible for all the vulnerable machines the unsuspecting public continues to use.my bud's(mid-70 in age) machine works fine, just not enough hard drive to upgrade from 1709 to 1803. the patch lady over at askwoody website talks about not being able to update her machine.
