    Hi @ Wilders

    Need some help please

New PC 16gb Ram AMD Ryzen 3 2200G more detailed spec from Inxi output attachment and Htop attachment.

First installed was Zorin 12, didn't like it, but was also freezing so I changed to Mint Cinnamon 19.1 which also freezes.

The freezing is from time to time but sometimes quite frequent. It involves Chromium and other software such as "Disks" "Backup Tool" etc.

The consequences are Screen freeze, mouse freezes (not every time but most) and keyboard lockup.

No keyboard combinations can unlock the freeze just a reset.

What seems to activate the freeze is a movement of the mouse when navigating through software.

I have scoured the forums and tried everything to no avail.

I can also say I have tried the live CD version of Mint 19.1 and that freezes also.

I am new to linux so patience is needed

    Thank you

    Terry

    Terry,

Freezing when using multiple OS suggests a hardware issue. Your computer is on warranty so I'd contact Support. In the meantime you could check your RAM with MemTest86 v8.1 Free Edition.

    Hi Brian K & wat0114

    Thanks for your input.

@wat0114 I have implemented the suggested changes ie Disable Visual effects. I will wait and see and report back.

@Brian K If the above fails - Back to the shop.

    Thanks again

    Terry

Most likely a GPU driver issue.

    Hi Brian K

Sorry I missed your post #5 I am on holiday in Spain.

Can I refer back to your post #2

"Freezing when using multiple OS suggests a hardware issue. Your computer is on warranty so I'd contact Support......."

Shortly after that I took my box back to the shop that built it, with a summary of the problem. They apparently booted up the PC twice, the second time the SSD completely failed, so they said apparently there had been some "odd behaviour". Nothing like that which I had reported. Anyway the repairs were not complete before I went on holiday. But they did say that what I had reported were symptomatic of hardware failure. So it appears you were right.

We will see, when I get back. I will report back when I get home in July.

    Thanks again

    Terry

    Hi Brian K & All

Now back from holiday, and I can update you with the latest in my saga.

When I returned from holiday I picked up my box (Linux Mint Cinnamon installed) The shop assured me that after replacing the M3s and reinstalling Mint everything was now working fine. Within 1 minute of switching on there was a freeze and within 5 minutes several!!

I took the box back and fortunately this time the freeze manifested itself whilst I was present. They were nonplussed. Cut a long story short they suggested installing Win 10 which I agreed to. I am running on unactivated at the moment. So as yet no extra cost.

The net result is that after 3 days I have a PC that does not freeze. So I have a decision to make.

Funnily enough, my son tried dual booting with Win 10 and Linux Mint Cinnamon and he had terrible problems with Mint. He finally removed it

Will report back in due course

It looks as though I will be visiting the Windows section of Wilders in due course.

Thanks to all those who tried to help.

    Terry

USA still the best. But barely.
    Try a different distro.

Hi, @TerryWood I think you should try a distro which is not based on Ubuntu/Debian. Both Mint and Zorin are based on Ubuntu which itself has its source from Debian. Can you try Manjaro linux distro which allows you to use latest kernel which may solve any driver related issue?

At the start of the thread you had an issue which appears to have been due to a faulty SSD. I guess no OS would have worked, including windows.

Now the SSD has been fixed, you have an issue with Mint cinnamon. I have installed this OS on two machines and had lock up problems. Both times it was resolved by installing Mint mate instead.

If you still want to try linux I suggest, as others have, that you try a different distro.

It seems highly unlikely that a PC could run windows but not any version of linux.
