Apple has updated the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and both are available at a reduced price as part of Apple's Back to School promotion.

The MacBook Air gets an updated True Tone display for a more comfortable viewing experience and a new lowered price, now $1,099 regular pricing, and $999 for college students. It also features the new keyboard design that Apple introduced back in May with the updated MacBook Pros in an attempt to solve keyboard issues that have been plaguing users.

Apple has also released an updated 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, with prices starting at $1,299, or $1,199 for college students. This new MacBook Pro comes equipped with an 8th-generation quad-core processor in the base model, and improved graphics processor. It also comes equipped with the Touch Bar and Touch ID, along with Apple's T2 security chip for added security.

Quietly lost amidst some upgrades to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro is a notable absence from Apple's online store: the 12-inch MacBook has been discontinued. The laptop was first introduced in 2015 and ushered in a new era of MacBook design for Apple -- it was the first to use USB-C, the first with the controversial and problematic butterfly keyboard, and the first Mac laptop without a glowing Apple logo in years.
Apple has confirmed to Engadget that the 12-inch MacBook is no more.

Over the last few years, the MacBook has been relegated to niche status; those who crave extremely portable devices were probably better off looking at the iPad Pro lineup at this point. Still, the 12-inch MacBook will remain a noteworthy product for the company simply for ushering in one of the more controversial eras of laptop design Apple has ever gone through.

What just happened? Trimming $100 off the cost of the MacBook Air was no easy feat and clearly, compromises had to be made somewhere. Rather than ditching a feature like Touch ID, Apple went with a more affordable solid state drive that isn’t quite as fast as its predecessor in terms of read speeds.

The new MacBook Air now starts at $1,099 – a full $100 less than before, but on Monday, we learned the source of the price cut – slower hardware.
French tech site Consomac recently tested the 2019 MacBook Air with 256GB of storage. Using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, the team recorded write speeds of 1 GB/s and read speeds of 1.3 GB/s. In comparison, last year’s equivalent model managed 920 MB/s on the write side but a much faster 2 GB/s when reading.

Unless you work with large files on a regular basis, odds are, most people probably won’t notice the difference in day-to-day activity but they will notice paying $100 less at check-out

Facepalm: Apple’s 2019 13-inch MacBook Pros might be great, portable laptops, but it seems some models aren’t without their problems. Apple has acknowledged that certain users are experiencing unexpected shutdowns and has released a support document explaining how to address the problem.

The issue is affecting the entry-level 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt ports, which arrived back in July. The machine has received excellent reviews—we picked it as one of our three top MacBooks in the Best of Laptops feature, praising its overall performance for multitasking and because it’s around the same size and weight as a MacBook Air.
The problem, which has been highlighted by several users in forum posts, sees the MacBooks randomly shutting down even when there’s plenty of battery life left.

Apple updates 13-inch MacBook Pro, adds Magic Keyboard

Apple gives the 13-inch MacBook Pro a much-needed refresh, adding 10th-generation Intel processors, double the base storage, and a Magic keyboard.
The new 13-inch MacBook Pro also features an updated keyboard, as Apple tries to work the kinks out of the flawed butterfly mechanism it has been pushing for the past four years.

Starting storage has been doubled across the board, starting at 256GB, and going to 1TB, with the option to spend more money and go all the way up to 4TB. The high-speed SSD offers sequential read speeds of up to 3.0GB/s.
8GB of RAM is the starting point for the two cheapest models, 16GB for the other two, with the option of bumping that up to 16GB and 32GB respectively.

Apple is offering the new 13-inch MacBook Pro in four different price configurations: $1,299, $1,499, $1,799, and $1,999 (education prices start at $1,199).

If you're thinking of buying the entry-level MacBook Pro 13in, we've got some bad news: Apple has doubled the price of its RAM upgrade. It now costs £200/$200 if you want 16GB instead of 8GB. Check out the options on Apple's site.

MacRumors spotted the price change, which has also occurred in other countries, including Sweden (bumped to SEK 2,500) and Germany (doubled from €125 to €250). This makes it clear that this is nothing to do with currency adjustment, which is the most common reason given for price rises.
At time of writing, there have been no similar price increases for other models, which use other types of memory.

The 2020 13in MacBook Pro is the last of Apple’s laptops to get its new and improved keyboard, banishing various issues to the rear view mirror and essentially perfecting this current design.

Despite both sharing the same name, the 2020 13in MacBook Pro is split into two lines: a cheaper version starting at £1,299 with two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports and older eighth-generation Intel chips; and a more powerful version starting at £1,799 with four USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports and the latest 10th-generation Intel chips.
It is the latter machine reviewed here but both two and four-port machines share the same design, including screen, keyboard and trackpad, leaving processing power and connectivity the differentiators.

Verdict
The 2020 13in MacBook Pro is not one but two different products.
Both the two-port and four-port share Apple’s new keyboard, which is genuinely excellent, the fantastic trackpad, great screen and all the other premium, well-executed features.

It’s super quiet and will stay at peak performance for an extended period that’s longer than most competitors. But at £1,799 it’s also very expensive, partly because it ships with double the RAM and storage, with 16GB and 512GB respectively.

Apple explains price rise on MacBook Pro RAM

Last weekend, Apple doubled the price of upgrading the MacBook Pro 13in's RAM from 8GB to 16GB. The increase occurred all over the world, including the UK, US, Germany and Sweden, which ruled out any explanation based on tax or currency exchange rates.

Apple has now gone on record to explain the increase and take responsibility for it. In a highly unusual step for the company, a spokesperson told The Verge that the increase is a correction from a price that had previously been too low.
It should never have cost £100/$100, in other words.

A week before kicking off WWDC, Apple introduced a pair of upgrades to its pro-level hardware lines. Both the 16-inch MacBook Pro and the Mac Pro desktop are getting select internal upgrades, starting today.

One the notebook front, the 16-inch model gets an additional graphics configuration. The addition of the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU marks the best graphics performance yet for the notebook line, marking up a 75-percent speed increase over the the next-highest configuration, the Radeon Pro 5500M.

Speaking of future-proofing, Apple also just rolled out a new feature designed to make it easier for users to upgrade the Mac Pro. A new SSD kit is designed for user-installation, featuring 1, 2, 4 and 8TB storage modules. Instructions for upgrading the high-end tower can be found here.
The MacBook update is currently available through Apple’s site. The SSD upgrade, meanwhile, should be arriving later today.

Initial tests shows impressive performance gains with new 5600M AMD GPU in 16-inch MacBook Pro

Apple added this week a new GPU option for the 16-inch MacBook Pro lineup. Customers can now purchase Apple’s high-end notebook with an AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU at $800 additional cost from the base model MacBook Pro.

But how does it compare with the other GPUs? YouTube channel Max Tech shows exactly that in its newest video, revealing impressive performance gains with this new model.
In Geekbench 5 Metal tests, the 16-inch MacBook Pro with 5600M graphics scored 43144, while the previous high-end model with an 8GB AMD 5500M GPU scored 28748. The entry model achieved only 21328 with the 4GB 5300M, which is basically half the performance of the new 5600M.
These performance gains should be reflected mostly in 3D intensive graphics tasks.

However, what’s really interesting in the tests is that the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the 5600M GPU beats the AMD Vega 48 on the latest iMac 5K and the Vega 56 on the iMac Pro.

Although the new AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU makes the 16-inch MacBook Pro an even more expensive machine, it can be very useful for professionals who work constantly with 3D graphics. For regular video editing, the base model can still handle the job.
