After a month-long ban, US president Donald Trump said today that he’ll allow companies to sell equipment to Huawei. He met the Chinese president Xi Jinping at the G20 summit being held in Osaka, Japan.
Trump said at a press conference that he’s only allowing equipment trade in areas where there’s no security risk to the country

It’s not clear at the moment if Google, Qualcomm, Intel, and other companies will resume trading with the Chinese tech giant. We’ve contacted them to learn more, and we’ll update the story accordingly.

Huawei staff admitted to having worked with Chinese intelligence agencies in a “mass trove” of employment records leaked online, according to an analysis of the files.

The CVs of the Huawei employees appear to show “far closer links” between the telecommunications company and military-backed cyber agencies than previously thought, a think tank has warned.

According to the study, the employment files suggest that some Huawei staff have also worked as agents within China’s Ministry of State Security; worked on joint projects with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA); were educated at China’s leading military academy; and had been employed with a military unit linked to a military unit linked to a cyber attack on U.S. corporations..."

For example, In a number of instances employees at the managerial level maintain simultaneous roles in PLA operations and Huawei.

At least one telecom's engineer involved in Huawei's 5G broadband roll out has a CV which heavily restricts information 'due to the involvement of military secrets'.

Many employees' prior postings within China's intelligence apparatus are high level and at the heart of the PLA's cyber-spying operations.

A senior U.S. official has revealed that the U.S. government might begin approving licenses for companies to start new sales with the Chinese firm, Huawei, within as little as two weeks.

According to Reuters, the news that the DoC would begin handing out licenses in the next few weeks came via a representative from an unnamed manufacturer who had been told by a U.S. official when the licenses would begin being handed out. The criteria to receive licenses was not revealed by the U.S. official but did say that licenses would be issued case-by-case, at least at first.

Despite the U.S. relaxing its stance against Huawei, the Chinese firm believes it should be taken off the list altogether.
The U.S. market is very important for Huawei, not only does it sell a lot of devices there, it also does a sizable amount of trade with U.S. firms

A UK parliamentary committee has concluded there are no technical grounds for excluding Chinese network kit vendor Huawei from the country’s 5G networks.

In a letter from the chair of the Science & Technology Committee to the UK’s digital minister Jeremy Wright, the committee says: “We have found no evidence from our work to suggest that the complete exclusion of Huawei from the UK’s telecommunications networks would, from a technical point of view, constitute a proportionate response to the potential security threat posed by foreign suppliers.”

The UK’s next prime minister must prioritize a decision on whether or not to allow Chinese tech giant Huawei to be a 5G supplier, a parliamentary committee has urged — warning that the country’s international relations are being “seriously damaged” by ongoing delay.
In a statement on 5G suppliers, the Intelligence and Security committee (ISC) writes that the government must take a decision “as a matter of urgency”.

The committee’s statement goes on to raise as a matter of concern the UK’s general reliance on China as a technology supplier.

“One of the lessons the UK Government must learn from the current debate over 5G is that with the technology sector now monopolised by such a few key players, we are over-reliant on Chinese technology — and we are not alone in this, this is a global issue. We need to consider how we can create greater diversity in the market. This will require us to take a long term view — but we need to start now,” it warns.

Huawei’s revenue growth of 30% in the first half is a slowdown from 39% in first three months of 2019, but is up sharply from 2018, Bloomberg said.
Huawei has so far managed to boost revenue by aggressively securing contracts for fifth-generation networking equipment, Bloomberg said.

The media has largely bought into Huawei’s ‘strong’ half-year results today, but there’s a major catch in the report: the company’s quarter-by-quarter smartphone growth was zero.

The telecom equipment and smartphone giant announced on Tuesday that its revenue grew 23.2% to reach 401.3 billion yuan ($58.31 million) in the first half of 2019 despite all the trade restrictions the U.S. slapped on it. Huawei’s smartphone shipments recorded 118 million units in H1, up 24% year-over-year.

The Trump administration could respond by next week to companies that have requested special licenses to sell to Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said on Tuesday during a visit to Brazil.
The licensing decisions would give much needed clarity to American companies, which have been looking for guidance since U.S. President Donald Trump promised in late June to provide some relief to firms that did business with Huawei.

Ross told reporters in a briefing he has received more than 50 applications so far for special licenses to do business with Huawei, but he expects to receive more.

The Chinese government has threatened to take retaliatory action if India's government bars Huawei from 5G networks on security grounds. In particular, it warned that it could potentially target Indian companies operating in China in response.
China's Foreign Ministry summoned India's ambassador in Beijing, Vikram Mistri, last month to hear China's concerns on the issue, according to Reuters.

The Indian government has not yet taken a decision on whether it should allow Huawei to participate in the 5G technology trials.
"Huawei has carried out operations in India for a long time, and has made contributions to the development of Indian society and the economy that is clear to all," Huawei spokeswoman Hua Chunying told Reuters in a statement.
Currently, a group of senior officials, led by the principal scientific adviser K Vijay Raghavan, is looking into whether Huawei should be allowed to participate in 5G trials in India.

Trump administration to ban government from doing business with Huawei

The Trump administration on Wednesday released an early publication of a rule that'll ban US government agencies from doing business with Huawei. The ban was mandated by Congress last year as part of the National Defense Authorization Act.

The rule, set to go into effect Aug. 13, prohibits federal purchases of telecommunications and video surveillance equipment and services from five Chinese companies, including Huawei and ZTE. The government has another year to meet broader NDAA restrictions that ban federal agencies from working with contractors that use products and services from Huawei and the other banned companies.

Huawei employees have been accused of hacking the phones of political opponents in Uganda and Zambia. The firm’s employees reportedly used a piece of software known as Pegasus to decrypt encrypted messages tapped from the devices of political opponents.
According to the Wall Street Journal who broke the story, Huawei’s Chinese head office was unaware of the spying, nor have they engaged in any similar spying for the Chinese government.

Huawei completely disputes the reporting in the article. The firm issued the following statement to CNBC in response to the WSJ report:

"[...] Our internal investigation shows clearly that Huawei and its employees have not been engaged in any of the activities alleged. We have neither the contracts, nor the capabilities, to do so."
The NSO Group which produces the Pegasus software also released the following statement disputing the claims:

"[...] We don’t work with Huawei at all. We don’t do business with Uganda, at all. And only NSO sells Pegasus — no one else does."
Whatever the truth may be in the matter, Huawei’s already tarnished reputation can ill-afford hits like this. Especially when one considers the US’s wavering promise to approve business deals with the pariah firm.

An extension will renew an agreement set to lapse on August 19, continuing the Chinese company’s ability to maintain existing telecommunications networks and provide software updates to Huawei handsets.
The situation surrounding the license, which has become a key bargaining chip for the United States in its trade negotiations with China, remains fluid and the decision to continue the Huawei reprieve could change ahead of the Monday deadline, the sources said.
