Huawei CEO, Ren Zhengfei, has said that the company's home-grown mobile operating system (OS) will be faster than both iOS and Android... but it could struggle when it comes to apps.
Zhengfei made the claim during an interview with French magazine Le Point, and the Huawei chief remains bullish about his company's chances in the market, no matter the long-term outcome of the current US-China trade war.

Speculation has now been rife for months that Huawei will unveil a new mobile operating system to either augment or replace Android on its smartphones. Just as we were all gearing up for the new Ark/HongMeng better-than-Android version of Android, speculation emerged that maybe it wouldn't be Android, after all, maybe it would be based on Russia's Aurora OS. Then came the revelation earlier this month that it wasn't coming at all, that Huawei's in-house OS was designed for IoT communications equipment and not for phones. And now, this week, we have learned that a smartphone OS is still on the cards, but it won't be called Ark or HongMeng, at least not in Europe. In Europe, it will be called Harmony.

Huawei’s Android replacement OS may actually be less of a replacement than was initially assumed.

When asked directly about it, Huawei’s Catherine Chen (a board member and senior VP) aid that the company would continue to use Android for its smartphone business. When asked about Hongmeng, she said that it was for industrial use and IoT devices. Its lightness and low-latency made it perfect for those purposes. It was reiterated again that Huawei intends to continue using Android on its consumer-facing products.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is testing a smartphone equipped with Hongmeng, the company’s self-developed operating system, which could potentially go on sale by the end of this year, Chinese state-media outlet Global Times reported.
The release of a Hongmeng-powered smartphone would mark a major step for China’s Huawei, the world’s second-biggest maker of smartphones, as U.S. government actions threaten its access to Google’s (GOOGL.O) Android operating system.

The device will be priced at around 2,000 yuan ($288), the Global Times said on Sunday, citing unnamed sources. That will place the device toward the low-end segment of the smartphone market.

Huawei today unveiled its homegrown HarmonyOS at its annual Huawei Developer Conference (HDC 2019). This seems to be the final international branding for the Hongmeng OS we have heard so much about in the past few weeks. Within the company's home nation, the OS will be called Hongmeng.

The Chinese giant is pegging the OS as the "first microkernel-based distributed OS for all scenarios," meaning it can run on anything from wearables and wireless earbuds to laptops and tablets to self-driving cars. Simply put, it's Huawei's attempt at creating the one OS to rule them all.
As a result, the company has optimised it for supporting devices with memory ranging from just a few kilobytes - like in IoT devices - to several gigabytes, the amount you'd traditionally find on a laptop or a smartphone.

not so much, Huawei main market is of course China and generally Chinese citizens are quite patriotic and will support the shift right away. Chinese uses Chinese Apps, Facebook and Google are secondary there.

But many people are much more optimistic about the homegrown OS.
“I’m optimistic about Huawei’s open source [OS] and Hongmeng’s future development, because there won’t be big problems in the Chinese market,” said one Zhihu user in a post with more than 3,900 upvotes. “Survive and develop, and the ecosystem will only be a matter of time. Even as Huawei touts the power of its Harmony operating system -- a potential alternative to Android -- the company insists it wants to maintain a single ecosystem and stick with Google's platform. As such, the Chinese telecom equipment and phone maker said it has no plans to launch a Harmony-powered smartphone.
That's according to Huawei Senior Vice President Vincent Yang, who spoke at a media event in New York on Wednesday.

"We want to maintain one standard, one ecosystem," Yang said, adding that Harmony would serve as an option B for the company.

While Yang said it was unlikely Huawei would launch a Harmony-powered phone, things could change if the ban is upheld.
"You never know," he said.

Huawei has announced that it will be shipping more devices next year powered by its Android alternative, HarmonyOS. The firm said that products will not be limited to China, but will also come to stores around the world.
While HarmonyOS was touted as a rival to Android, the Chinese firm isn’t planning to bring HarmonyOS to Android’s biggest domain – smartphones & tablets – just yet.

The comments that were cited by Reuters were made by the president of the Huawei consumer business group’s software division, Wang Chenglu. He re-iterated the fact that the firm did not want to drop Android from its phones. The firm likely wants to stick with Android because it’ll be more appealing to customers, with that said, the firm does plan to include support for Android apps on HarmonyOS sometime in the future.
