Today, Raspberry Pi is introducing a new version of its popular line of single-board computer. The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the fastest Raspberry Pi ever, with the company promising "desktop performance comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems."

The new model is built around a Broadcom BCM2711 SoC, which, with four 1.5GHz Cortex A72 CPU cores, should be a big upgrade over the quad core Cortex A53 CPU in the Raspberry Pi 3. The RAM options are the even bigger upgrade though, with options for 1GB, 2GB, and even 4GB of DDR4. The Pi 3 was limited to 1GB of RAM, which really stung for desktop-class use cases.
There has been some upgrades and tweaks to the Pi 4 I/O, too.

Just like the Raspberry Pi 3, the Pi 4 starts at $35 for the version with 1GB of RAM. There are now higher tiers with more RAM: 2GB for $45 and 4GB for $55. Raspberry Pi says the Pi 4 will remain in production until at least January 2026.

So after that struggle, here are a few tips for those anxious to get started with the new Raspberry Pi 4:

Don't just order a Pi 4B and expect that you will be able to get it working.

The biggest problem is the display connection. Make sure that you have, or you can get, a micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable, or adapter.

Another significant problem is the power supply. Make sure that you have, or you can get, a power supply with a USB-C connector, or a USB-C to micro-USB converter.

If cases are important to you, be sure that you order a RPi4 case! This new board doesn't quite fit in the old "official" Raspberry Pi 3 case. It comes close, and with a bit of creativity (or tolerance), you could probably use one, but if you want it to be really "right", you'll want a new case.

I have been using Pis for various projects since their introduction in 2012, and for many models, including the tiny Pi Zero and various A+ revisions, you didn't even need a fan or heatsink to avoid CPU throttling.
The Pi 4 is a different beast, though. Not only does the CPU get appreciably hot even under normal load, there are a number of other parts of the board that heat up to the point they are uncomfortable to touch.

Here's a thermal image taken with my Seek thermal imager highlighting the parts of the board generating the most heat after 5 minutes at idle: [...]
Finally, this image was taken at idle, but if you have any activity on the USB ports, the USB controller chip on the right (that small red spot before you get to the far right of the image) lights up bright white and gets to be 60-70°C as well. A firmware update for the Pi 4 may help keep that chip a little cooler, but it will still get hot under load.

Without any ventilation, it's kind of a little plastic oven inside the Pi 4 case. A heat sink might help in some tiny way, but that heat has nowhere to go! So I decided to follow the lead of Redditor u/CarbyCarberson and put a fan in the top cover.

While it’s a great little computer, it does have one big flaw -- due to a design issue, many chargers aren’t compatible with the new board’s USB-C port, so they won’t work.
In a new YouTube video, the Raspberry Pi Foundation's Eben Upton, James Adams, and Gordon Hollingworth answer some questions about the new Pi, and of course the USB-C controversy is one of them.

[...] There's a missing resistor on the board which means that if you have -- as far as we can tell -- it means you can’t power it from a MacBook charger, in practical terms, so there are, if you have a nice smart charger, you have a nice expensive USB-C cable, there is a chance that it won't power your Raspberry Pi. [...]

The problem is that the Raspberry Pi 4 can only be powered by "simple" USB-C cables, not those with e-marker chips in them, like laptop charger/thunderbolt and 5A-capable cables.
It’s a little bit disappointing that Upton has dismissed the problem like this, suggesting that if you have an expensive USB-C cable, it’s your fault that the Pi won’t charge. It isn't. It's the fault of bad design on the Foundation's behalf.

A strange bug has been discovered with the Raspberry Pi 4 which sees Wi-Fi failing when the screen resolution is set to 2560 x 1440.

Numerous users have taken to online forums -- including the official Raspberry Pi support forums – where various workarounds have been discussed. Of course, the simple solution to this problem is to use a lower resolution, but the root causes of it are still under investigation.

"One full day of crazy debugging, and the result is that if the Raspberry Pi 4 outputs HDMI at a resolution of 2560x1440, the Wi-Fi stops working. Any lower resolution we tried, from 2048x1080 down, does not show this problem".
It does not appear to be an isolated problem. Not only have numerous other people stumbled across the same issue, Zini conducted his own investigation and was able to reproduce it in a number of circumstances: [...]
There is a discussion thread on Hacker News where there is speculation mimicking that found on the Raspberry Pi forums that cable shielding could be an issue.

In a tweet this weekend, bossman Eben Upton revealed that he wasn't quite sure when the 30,000,000th Raspberry Pi was sold, but sold it was:

Currently, the Raspberry Pi 4 is offering something more akin to a traditional computer experience, and indeed we've been quite successful in using it for creating and updating its site. Upton told us at the time that he believes that the Raspberry Pi 4 was the first model that could be considered as a full PC - with casing, keyboard and mouse to match.

Meanwhile, the influence of the Pi is everywhere - even space, where NASA is using it to power roving vehicles on other worlds.

Following on from our recent announcement that Raspberry Pi 4 is OpenGL ES 3.1 conformant, we have some more news to share on the graphics front. We have started work on a much requested feature: an open-source Vulkan driver!
Vulkan
Standards body Khronos describes Vulkan as “a new generation graphics and compute API that provides high-efficiency, cross-platform access to modern GPUs”.
First triangle
The “first triangle” image is something of a VideoCore graphics tradition: while I arrived at Broadcom too late to witness the VideoCore III version, I still remember the first time James and Gary were able to get a flawless, single-tile, RGB triangle out of VideoCore IV in simulation.

Before you get too excited, remember that this is just the start of the development process for Vulkan on Raspberry Pi. While there have been community efforts in the direction of Vulkan support (originally on VideoCore IV) as far back as 2018, Igalia has only been working on this new driver for a few weeks, and we still have a very long development roadmap ahead of us before we can put an actual driver in the hands of our users.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has released an 8GB Raspberry Pi 4 that's available for $75 along with a beta of an official 64-bit operating system it's calling 'Raspberry Pi OS' instead of Raspbian.

The new SKU means fans of the Raspberry Pi can buy the 2GB Pi 4 for $35, the 4GB Pi 4 for $55, or the 8GB Pi 4 for $75.
Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi Trading and co-founder of The Raspberry Pi Foundation, says when the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B launched a year ago, the foundation had an 8GB variant in mind.

"The real barrier to our offering a larger-memory variant was the lack of an 8GB LPDDR4 package," said Upton. "These didn't exist (at least in a form that we could address) in 2019, but happily our partners at Micron stepped up earlier this year with a suitable part."

The redesign included moving power-supply components and removing a switch-mode power supply from the right-hand side of the board next to the USB 2.0 sockets. The engineers also added a new switcher next to the USB-C power connector.

Upton says the 64-bit image is for power users who want to map all 8GB into the address space of a single process. It's currently in beta and misses several key features, but once ready it will provide a 64-bit alternative to 64-bit versions of Ubuntu and Gentoo.
The 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS can only be installed on Pi 3 and Pi 4 devices because they're 64-bit boards. The 64-bit OS beta can be download from the Raspberry Pi forum announcement.

"We think the new name will help more people feel confident in using our computers and our software," said Upton.

It’s become a tradition that we follow each Raspberry Pi model with a system-on-module variant based on the same core silicon. Raspberry Pi 1 gave rise to the original Compute Module in 2014; Raspberry Pi 3 and 3+ were followed by Compute Module 3 and 3+ in 2017 and 2019 respectively. Raspberry Pi 4 Achieves Vulkan 1.0 Conformance

In a recent guest post on the Raspberry Pi website, Iago Toral from Igalia a Free Software consultancy, revealed that V3DV Vulkan Mesa driver for the Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 400, and Compute Module 4, which both use the BCM2711 SoC, has been declared as conformant with Vulkan 1.0 specifications.

Tested on a Raspberry Pi 4 running Raspberry Pi OS and Linux kernel 5.4.51, the V3DV driver passed Conformance Test Suite 100,000 tests. This marks a milestone in the project but it by no means the end, as Toral mentions in the post:

"Vulkan 1.0 conformance is a major milestone in bringing Vulkan to Raspberry Pi, but it isn’t the end of the journey. Our team continues to work on all fronts to expand the Vulkan feature set, improve performance, and fix bugs. So stay tuned for future Vulkan updates!"

The Raspberry Pi 4 has been the main topic of many electronics hobbyists and a plethora of software developers that love the platform. The Raspberry Pi 4 introduced two micro HDMI ports, with a single port offering 4k 60 Hz, and both ports providing up to 4k 30 Hz.
According to the latest round of patches submitted by Maxime Ripard, we are soon going to receive improved support for 4K 60 Hz resolution using Broadcom VC4 processor and HDMI.

As per the original Phoronix report, the Broadcom VC4 kernel Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) has seen major work to support the 4K resolution at a 60 Hz refresh rate.

The ongoing supply chain issues across the semiconductor industry (and more broadly) are now impacting the Raspberry Pi operations for end-users/customers when it comes to pricing.

The Raspberry Pi Zero and Raspberry Pi 4 2GB models have been under particular pressure due to supply chain disruptions. The Raspberry Pi Foundation expects these supply chain challenges to last through at least much of next year.
Due to the ongoing challenges, the 2GB Raspberry Pi 4 is now temporarily moved back up to the $45 USD price-point from the prior $35 pricing that was instated after the 1GB Raspberry Pi 4 was discontinued. They hope once the supply chain issues dissipate they will restore the $35 pricing.

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B was already a powerful single-board computer (SBC), as was the Compute Module 4 and the Pi 400. Last year, the Pi Foundation improved performance across the board with Vulkan 1.0 support, which it announced in a blog post. Incidentally, it took the Pi Foundation almost a year to develop a Vulkan 1.0 compliant driver for the Pi 4, Pi 400 and the Compute Module 4.

Now, it has brought Vulkan 1.1 compliance to the trio, too.
While this may sound like an incremental upgrade, the Pi Foundation promises that it delivers worthwhile performance improvements in some applications.

As with most Raspberry Pi advancements, there could be unforeseen opportunities unleashed by this seemingly tiny change. Vulkan 1.2 support gives developers the same 3D-graphics interface (if not anywhere near the same power) as 2019 NVIDIA graphics cards, 2020 Intel chips with integrated graphics, and dozens of other devices.

With a Vulkan 1.0 driver installed, developer Iago Toral was able in 2020 to get the original Quake trilogy mostly running on a Pi 4, with not-too-shabby frame rates.

Raspberry Pi: Vulkan update: version 1.2 conformance for Raspberry Pi 4

The Vulkan project was a long-running effort to define a better, more modern, abstraction, which began during my time at Khronos, and led eventually to the release of Vulkan 1.0 in 2016. Since then, it has seen widespread adoption among GPU, operating system, and application developers.

For the last couple of years, we have been working with our friends at Igalia to bring Vulkan to the Raspberry Pi 4 platform, and today we’re happy to announce that we have achieved Vulkan 1.2 conformance from Khronos.
