The law, passed by the country's parliament this week, seeks to rein in growing use of the unmanned aerial vehicles.
Those found to be intoxicated while flying a drone could also face a fine of up to 300,000 yen (£2,200).

"We believe operating drones after consuming alcohol is as serious as (drink) driving," a Japanese transport ministry official told the AFP news agency.
As well as fines over drunken use, the legislation also levies fines on pilots who perform dangerous stunts with their drone.

Zomato, the online ordering and food delivery platform, on Wednesday announced that it has successfully tested its drone delivery technology. The test, which was conducted using a hybrid drone, was a part of the company's attempts to reduce the time taken to make a food delivery to its customers.
The first test saw Zomato make a drone-based food package delivery under restricted conditions, covering 5 km in 10 minutes and at peak speed of 80 kmph.

"The drone was tested last week at one of the remote sites approved by the DGCA. Such tests are done at very remote sites which are especially designed to conduct such tests," Zomato told IANS.

They’re coming in all shapes and sizes, too. For example, Boeing’s cargo air vehicle weighs 747 pounds, has eight rotors that allow for vertical flight, and can carry payloads of up 500 pounds. California-based startup Sabrewing is working on a prototype that can achieve speeds of up to 180 knots (207 miles per hour) with a cruising altitude as high as 22,000 feet. Another startup, Natilus, is working on a 30-foot prototype that’s about the size and weight of a military Predator drone..."

"Fighting Fires with Chinese Drones Despite Possible Data Theft

FREMONT, CALIF. - In the future, every firetruck will carry a drone, much like they carry a water hose today, says Jeff Kleven, acting division chief of operations with the Fremont (California) Fire Department.

The department, which has 14 drones, uses the technology to save lives and make firefighters' jobs safer. Recently, with the help of a drone equipped with an infrared camera able to detect body heat, the Fremont police rescued a deaf child at night.

The fire department has worked with Chinese drone maker DJI to use its drones and software for rescues and training...

Recently, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security repeated concerns that Chinese-made drones could be leaking sensitive data to China. While DJI wasn’t named, it is the world’s largest commercial drone maker. In 2017, the U.S. Army barred use of DJI's drones.

Kleven said the department takes seriously concerns about data. The DHS’s warning serves as a reminder of best practices for storing and transferring information.

'We are well aware of the accusations that are being made. It’s not something new. There are ways we localize our data so it doesn’t go out,' Kleven said. 'There are ways we don’t have to be connected to the internet. We don’t have to transfer things over the internet. We can isolate our data within our system. We are confident with that.'..."

A total of 38 flights were affected after Changi Airport was forced to close one runway because of drone sightings in the vicinity of the airport, said the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on Wednesday (Jun 19).
"To ensure the safety of aircraft operations and passengers, the operations of one runway were suspended for short periods of time between 11pm on Jun 18 and 9am on Jun 19," said the authority in a statement.

"A multi-agency team including the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Changi Airport Group, Singapore Armed Forces and the Singapore Police Force was activated for the search and locate operations," it said.
In Singapore, drones are prohibited from flying within 5km of an airport without a permit.

The current ULC proposal appropriately balances the rights of property owners with the needs of drone operators to access airspace.

If enacted by a state, the law would allow judges to weigh how many times and for how long the drone flew over the property, how low it was flying, why it was flying over the property, whether anyone saw the drone, and the time of day during which the flight occurred, when determining whether a drone has caused “substantial interference” with a property owner’s use and enjoyment of their land.

As commercial drones become more of a reality, there's increasing and urgent awareness of the problem of drone safety.
But the enduring safety technology of choice for commercial drones is one that hails from the 1700s: the parachute.

Currently, the FAA prohibits most drones from being flown directly over people. Professional drone operators can apply for a waiver from that restriction for certain use cases if they can demonstrate they have robust safety mitigations in place including having a validated parachute.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) a four-year waiver allowing unmanned aircraft systems to be flown over people. The waiver is another step in the state’s goal to achieve a statewide UAS air traffic control network.

The drone series given the go-ahead to fly above residents’ heads is the DJI Mavic 2 equipped with a ParaZero SafeAir parachute recovery system. The SafeAir sits atop the drone and uses its own set of sensors to monitor flight data for signs of critical failure, at which point the deployment of a parachute and a buzzer to warn people to move out of harm’s way is triggered, according to ParaZero’s website.

DJI challenges BBC on drone danger reports

In an open letter, it expressed "deep disappointment" with the way drones were depicted in the videos.
The reports were based on "hearsay", claimed DJI, which felt they fell short of the BBC's public remit to "inform, educate and entertain".
Disturbing report
Instead of featuring this information which showed how drones can be used safely, it claimed the BBC focused on "sensational, high-risk scenarios" that were unlikely to come about.

The BBC responded: "In the wake of the crisis at Gatwick Airport last year - and the strong public interest in this - we believe our Horizon investigation into the technology behind drones, and whether the related UK safety measures are adequate, was justified, fair and impartial."
"The film does not claim that drone technology is unsafe, but rather that it can be used maliciously when in the wrong hands. Indeed, as drone users ourselves, the BBC is well aware of the positive benefits of them when used appropriately."

A civil engineering company was fined S$9,000 on Monday (July 8) for flying a drone in public for business purposes without a permit, becoming the first firm to be dealt with in court for such a case.

The charge carries a maximum fine of S$20,000. Under the law, offenders facing a second or subsequent conviction can face up to 15 months' jail, a fine of up to S$40,000, or both.
As the company was carrying out underground foundation works for an MRT development project, it wanted to capture aerial footage of the vicinity for its construction work plan.

The Metropolitan Police revealed yesterday that it will deploy the £80,000 drone to catch dangerous, careless or speeding motorists.

The Aeryon Skyranger drone which can carry night vision cameras as well as zoom lenses was developed for tactical surveillance by the military, has been deployed in war zones across the middle east and is now used by 20 armed forces around the world.

Motoring organisations said the deployment of military-grade technology against drivers would “raise eyebrows” but could be cost effective as a deterrent..."

Victoria Police set to take to the skies with drone patrols

Police drones will be scanning the skies at major events in Melbourne as early as next month as part of a new specialist unit.
The drones, to be managed by Police Air Wing, can run 24/7 and will be equipped with night vision to monitor high-risk areas throughout the night.

Victoria Police will have the added benefit of using the drones in a range of operational duties across the state, boosting police resources, Inspector Craig Shepherd said.
"It will also assist when police attend emergency situations with the ability to fly a drone in to provide advice to someone in a tricky situation or supply first aid equipment or water," he said.
Police hope to operate up to 50 drones within the next 12 months.

Ahead of the company’s quarterly earnings call this evening, it revealed that it has applied to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration for Part 135 certification, which would enable it to orchestrate commercial drone flights under a newly formed subsidiary business called UPS Flight Forward.

Part 135 approval, which could come as early as this year, would allow Flight Forward to apply for FAA-certified flight operations beyond line of sight, at night, and without limit to the number of drones or operators in command.
