Apple talks a good talk. But they allow lots of privacy-violating apps in their store.

And sure, people would complain if Apple booted the (for example) Facebook app. But they can't have it both ways.

iCloud uses only some end to end encryption, however, not everything is end to end encrypted. ->HERE<- is Apple's iCloud Security overview. Kind of confusing, however, you could quickly realize they are not fully end to end encrypted.

My recommendations would be to replace iCloud with nextcloud or owncloud. They are both fully end to end encrypted, open source, and free. For password management I would highly recommend bitwarden. Again, uses end to end encryption, open source, and free. They can all be synced across all off your devices, windows, MAC, iOS, and Android.

Despite celebrating its privacy initiatives non-stop in recent years, Apple was surprisingly mum on the topic during its annual iPhone announcement event.

With millions of eyes focused on a single stage Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook had every opportunity to address the series of embarrassing security foul-ups that have plagued the company over the past [...] But instead of acknowledging these errors, or promising that its new line of devices would do more to protect their users, Apple decided to sidestep the issue altogether.

While Apple had plenty to say Tuesday about all its amazing gadgets [...] it had virtually nothing to say about privacy, other than a couple of passing, obligatory nods when it helped to advertise certain core functionality, such as Face ID.
With all the planning that goes into these events, it’s hard to imagine that’s was an oversight. It seems far more likely that Apple decided it was better to keep its mouth shut than draw attention to a year’s worth of failures.

Apple Inc. is officially returning to the Las Vegas CES technology conference for the first time in decades to discuss its stance on consumer privacy -- rather than pitch a new hardware product.
The company’s senior director of privacy Jane Horvath will be speaking on a “Chief Privacy Officer Roundtable” on Jan. 7, according to the CES agenda.

Horvath, along with executives from Facebook Inc., Procter & Gamble Co., and a commissioner from the Federal Trade Commission, will discuss how companies build privacy at scale, regulation and consumer demands.

Engadget: Apple's first CES appearance in 28 years is all about privacy

There have long been reports of Apple staff roaming the show floor to scout the competition, and Apple not-so-subtly trolled rivals at CES 2019 with an ad that made its privacy position clear.

Still, this is a notable step. It's unlikely that Apple will return to announcing products at CES when the company is well-known for wanting control over when and how it conducts launches. This does, however, indicate that Apple is more willing to engage with the rest of the industry, if just to get its message across.

It had been 28 years since Apple last made an official trip to CES until today when Jane Horvath, the company's senior director for global privacy, appeared on a panel discussing consumer privacy.

Touting privacy, of course, has become one of the company's main marketing strategies. The pitch is that, in a post-Cambridge Analytica world that's become an arms-race for consumer data, Apple alone -- not Google, Amazon or Facebook -- can be trusted with personal information.

"Almost every day when we read the newspaper we see different concerning stories about privacy or security breaches. It would be impossible to conclude that enough is being done," said Slaughter of the FTC.
And the burden of protecting privacy can't lie only on consumers, she said. Understanding the amount of user data that's processed daily is "untenable for most people."

Apple's Horvath, who previously was global privacy counsel at Google and chief privacy counsel at the Department of Justice, expectedly listed the company's "privacy by design" and data minimization principles.
Egan, of Facebook, tried to put her employer on an equally secure plane as Apple, citing privacy as a fundamental right [...] "We have a different business model than Apple but both business models are privacy-protective" she said.

With an estimated $43 billion in sales done in China last year, Apple finds itself in a quandary that many major multinationals are also in. The Chinese market is highly lucrative, but comes packed with potential PR pitfalls.

However, Apple has also shown itself willing to acquiesce to the demanding terms of the Chinese government on several different occasions: allowing iCloud services in the country to be moved to state-run servers, banning an app used by Hong Kong protestors to organize, and censoring the Taiwan flag emoji among a few of the larger items that made international news.
Apple’s path to walk in China is no less challenging, but the company seems to have adopted a new strategy at the PR end; total silence.

Apple’s standard stated position on China is that it complies with the laws of the nations in which it does business without making value judgments about them.

This puts it in the same position many other Western companies that have relationships with China have found themselves in; bow their heads, accept Chinese censorship and weather whatever blowback there is back home.
Can Apple continue to be “The Privacy Company”?
The proposal that was shot down last month, which was backed by privacy group SumOfUs as well as influential corporate governance groups ISS and Glass Lewis, would have also required Apple to publish an annual report on company policies relating to freedom of expression and access to information.

2019 famously saw Apple transition to being something of a “privacy as a service” company, as pointed out by TechCrunch.
