Nearly 100 drivers followed a Google Maps detour -- and ended up stuck in an empty field June 27, 2019 https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/26/us/google-maps-detour-colorado-trnd/index.html
Everyone is like, don't use google, google bad, well good luck using other maps Openstreetmap doesn't even have the "yellow thingy" where you put it somewhere and it shows you pictures of the street in 360
Paper is very flexible. I also use it as a password manager. It even works when your computer doesn't.
Sorry for being old school trucker. I just pull out that updated Rand McNally Map Book and do the pre trip. If I have to detour, pull it over and read the map. I found myself a few times at a dead end road driving our SUV using GPS.
Big deal. Google maps is nearly 100% reliable. Combine it with some common sense and it kicks the crap -especially in efficiency- out of paper maps.

"Common Sense". That's another problem, look at the people driving now. I've about seen it all with over 2 million miles over the road. The percentage of people with no common sense is increasing dramatically yearly.
Just visited Thailand, rent a motorbike, Google Maps saved my life there, just had to look at my smartwatch and follow the directions without even needing to stop once. With a paper map it would be a hassle, not saying what if the weather was rainy ... Just for it Google deserves to be what they are now.
Yes people bash it now like sheeps following some ridiculous trend, but they forgot Google made services that are the foundations of internet.

For those asking about alternatives, I use Here WeGo (used to be Here Maps) since Symbian via Windows Phone to Android. It has fully offline maps, real-time traffic updates. And many car manufacturers actually use Here maps in their own navigation systems. Mrk
