A friend of mine is going to China

She would like to be in contact with her family on whats app if that is possible, we are aware of the restrictions there and wondered about using a VPN

Is anyone with any knowledge able to help us please.

    Thank you

Is it a good idea not to bring any pcphonetablet devices you don't want cloned & or seized into China?

Do not visit China and mess around with VPN's. That just don't sound good at all. Even using one is grounds for suspicion.

With that being said I did some googling and it looks like people do use VPN's in China. I just wouldn't do it.

I think that there's a subreddit for that.

  6. lol.....some people. where do people get their information from? probably google search I assume. i doubt anyone has ever been to china.

china could care less about tourists/foreigners using vpn's. they only care about your money you make the government while there. sure they monitor all traffic, but as long as your not organizing political protests with locals they really don't care about you.

china is not going to burn a million dollar 0-day exploit on ios/whatsapp for a grandma using whatsapp to message her family back home.

You're probably safe enough, unless you're doing political stuff. Or unless you got picked for payback over some slight against China. Then you might spend some time in jail.
