At Build 2019, Microsoft announced the new Windows Terminal for Windows 10 users. Last night the Windows Terminal showed up on the Microsoft Store but was not available for download.
Now, Microsoft has published an official post confirming the release of Windows Terminal. This will be the first of the several Windows Terminal releases. At this point, the Terminal is in preview and Microsoft has set winter of 2019 as the deadline for the Terminal 1.0 release.

The new Terminal app comes with several new features such as multiple tab support, GPU accelerated DirectWrite/DirectX-based text rendering engine, support for many settings and configuration options that allows users to personalize Terminal’s appearance and more.

If you’re running Windows 10 then you can download Windows Terminal from the Microsoft Store below. Microsoft has made the new Terminal open source so you can head to GitHub and contribute to the development of the app.

The in and outs of Microsoft's new Windows Terminal

What's the point of the new Windows terminal? There are a few things. One obvious one is multi-tab support. You can click + to add a tab. There is also a drop-down menu that lets you select which command line application - such as cmd, PowerShell, a Windows Subsystem for Linux distribution – you would like to use.
Windows has been moving towards the Unix/Linux model, introducing a Windows Pseudo Console called ConPTY which sends and receives text as an alternative to the old API.

A related feature is the gradual introduction of support for VT (Video Terminal) escape sequences, based on an ancient system for formatting text by including codes prefixed with the Esc character
The VT approach now has superior features including 24-bit colour support and a proper concept of foreground and background. This is why the latest Insider Build of Windows 10 includes a "Terminal" tab in Command Prompt properties.

It seems pretty crude so far. At this point it just gives me the option of Powershell or a CMD prompt. And tabs. Meh. I guess it would be ok as a replacement. It doesn't really serve a purpose in addition to the things already in place.

agreed, and when I tried to launch powershell from it, it just gives me a UAC prompt and launches a separate Window of Powershell so I might as well just launch that myself.

Microsoft is rolling out the September 2019 release (1909) of its multi-tabbed Windows Terminal console app with a new settings schema, a new font, stylus support, and Windows 20H1 Console Windows Host (conhost) bug fixes.
New features
The new Windows Terminal build that just reached v0.5.2661.0 adds a new monospaced font dubbed Cascadia Code that will automatically install on download. This new font is also open source and can be downloaded separately from its GitHub repository.
The new Windows Terminal version also comes with a settings schema that will "provide auto-fill suggestions when editing your profiles.json file and it will also provide definitions of each property."

Being able to manage all command lines into a single interface will allow developers to better keep their work organized for increased efficiency.
