Not surprised to see Microsoft get that many false positives. I had one on an HP printer driver installer and one on a Firefox installer in the last couple of weeks.

Disappointed to see ESET with 6 false positives on top of some fails. I'm not about to trade it for WD though.

I couldn't picture Kaspersky anywhere else but numero uno. As for Microsoft, if it's going to be false somewhere, let it be the positives, rather than the negatives. I haven't experienced either yet though, except in test circumstances. :)

Does Microsoft warn or would it automatically act? Would user have control?

The chart showed that Microsoft would automatically block it in almost every case, but there was 0.4% that were user decisions.

With so many FPs, auto block is it such a good idea?

It is a pain in the neck, but it is secure. Windows Defender is mainly blocking files in the "low" and "very low" prevalence categories. They are playing it "better safe than sorry." There are no blocks at all for WD in the "high" prevalence category.

Was about to say the same. Surprised with ESET but definitely not going to use WD at any time soon. It's garbage.

I want to make sure I am reading the chart right. As far as false positives, a program that is not used by many people will tend to get blocked by Windows Defender but a high use program will not?

Yes, only the little used programs get blocked.

I don't think so. Sometimes a FP create damages greater than a malware does.

^^^ This is from AV-Test, not from AV-C.
Also, no one is from "AV-Comparatives: Real-World Protection Test February-May 2019"

    The report is exemplary.
It goes for all synthetic tests.

The mentioned tests and the relevant threads are here =

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/av-comparatives-malware-protection-test-march-2019.415553/

What I'm trying to say is: Your link to MS pdf is ok, but your screenshot from the AV-Test results here in AV-Comparatives thread was off topic (and misleading) imo.

Agreed, as I have experienced that, multiple times. It's really fun when a false positive requires a reformat and reinstall... of everything.

I remember back in the day Norton Security's FPs did permanent damage to the OS requiring a format leaving thousands of people angry.

Could you or someone else explain this issue? How does a FP cause damage to the OS? I understand how this could happen if the AV blocked and quarantined critical system processes. But that is not the kind of FP that Windows Defender is guilty of. It blocks new files, not existing ones.
