Anyone else annoyed by the forced automatic updates on Windows 10? Me too! Sadly, some of the basic things like setting a group policy or disabling a service aren't quite enough to get it to stop. So, I wrote this application to try to get a better way to interrupt what Windows 10 Update is trying to do.

This is broken down into 3 parts: group policy, disabling services, and blocking urls.

Group Policy
If you have Windows 10 Home, you don't have access to the Group Policy Editor, but you can still set it via the registry. This application will make those updates for you, because who can remember where those settings are. [...]
Disabling Services:
When in doubt, you can disable the Windows 10 services that run the updates. There are two that seem to control everything: Windows Update Service and Windows Module Installer. [...]
Blocking URLs
There are also a number of URLs that have been identified as being use by Windows Update. That list is included in the app config file so you can alter it if need be. You can set which URLs to block individually or as a group. This updates the hosts file at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.

This is a kind of large update.

Updated UI to allow for easier future changes to functionality.

Changed Windows Service functionality to rename system files instead of trying to block via credentials.

Backwards compatibility is maintained to undo credentials changes.

Added support for disabling new Windows Update Medic Service which was voiding previous versions.

Enabling a service no longer requires a reboot to take effect

Except for Medic Service due to access rights

Added version number to About page.

Fixed #10 - Service incorrectly identified as Enabled.

Fixed issue where service cannot be enabled if another process recreated the service file.

As a note, I'm not entirely sure that the Windows OS is listening to this anymore. I plan on looking into this an making updates to this at some point.

This started out as a project to shut down the Windows Update mechanic. It grew from there as Microsoft tweaked how they ran and protected the update service. It probably would have died there, but it seems people are liking this application. Version 3.1.0 has over 10k downloads! So I've felt a little obiligated to keep this updated.

With the latest update, I realized another major annoyance of Windows 10 is a lot of bloatware. Random apps that either aren't needed or that are added bloatware.

Wu10Man is an open source tool that you can use for disabling Windows 10 Updates. The name stands for Windows 10 Update Manager. Just like with other programs that tinker with Windows settings, I recommend creating a System Restore point before using the program, in case something goes awry.

Wu10Man's interface is divided into four tabs, and the approach is user-friendly.
Windows Services
The left pane in this tab describes the purpose of each service, while the right pane contains toggles for disabling/enabling the services.

Hosts File
Microsoft has several servers for providing Windows Updates.
You can always block these by editing the Hosts file in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder. But why waste time entering all those URLs, when Wu10Man offers an easier way.
Pause Updates
The Pause Updates tab in Wu10Man offers 2 ways for this. The first option is to Pause Feature Updates (like the Windows 10 May 2004 Update) that adds new features. Enable the option by selecting a date from the program's built-in calendar. Or choose the number of days till which you wish to defer updates.
Declutter
The last tab in Wu10Man is marked BETA, so tread with caution here. This section lists various apps that Windows 10 ships with, those that are not required for the operating system to function.

Delaying tab loading until they're selected so that errors that might result have a better context.

This does result in a delay of displaying of a coupe of them as data is gathered.

Removed dependency to AutoFac.

Older versions of Windows have been getting errors regarding "System.ValueTuple".

This has spawned a few issues and emails because of collisions with Windows Defender.
