I just heard back from the seller. In effect he said: "We did get Windows 8.1 Pro installed before it shipped. It wasn't so much a matter of time, we just weren't sure it would work with the Windows registration, but it did."

QUESTION: That sounds like the "legal" aspect is OKAY, right?

@Bill_Bright & @guest -- This girl is very intelligent and is an avid, active libertarian (NOT liberal -- libertarian). She disdains Windows 10 because of the way it is marketed & manipulated** by M$. Her avoidance of Win10, she tells me, is for reasons of principle, totally unrelated to the nature of the OS itself.

    **"Manipulated" is her word

@bellgamin honestly she doesn't know what she is talking about, Win7, 8, has the same marketing crap, win10 is just done straight, openly and without remorse because they saw, since decades, people doesn't really care.

If she wanted avoid MS crap, she should have gone Linux.

If she's avoiding it because of Microsoft's manipulative marketing, thats a bad reason to do so. Microsoft has been doing these kind of anti competitive practices since forever. Any company in such position would do so. I use 10 now but I prefer 8.1 but for reasons like it being more stable and less CPU intensive than 10.

Anyway 14 years old, full of dreams and pre-made ideas, no clues about security... Nothing much to debate with...

Intelligence is not the same as being smart. She needs to use her intelligence to get smart about security, Microsoft and Windows 10 for she is NOT smarter than the the bad guys. Short of taking the time to educate herself, if she continues to believe that nonsense about manipulation, she should use Linux.
And every company does. Look at the extremely aggressive tactics used by Norton, McAfee and others in the anti-malware industry where they entice computer builders with great financial incentives to bungle their "trial" versions of their software on new computer, then use fear-mongering and scare tactics to coerce users to paying outrageous prices to subscribe to outlandish recurring fees before the trial period runs out.

Look at the tactics used by big-pharma and banks, Facebook and Apple to "manipulate" consumers into paying through the nose for products we need, but for get cheaper elsewhere, and worse, for products we don't need.

Yes, MS wants everyone on W10. That just makes good common and business sense. In that way, they can concentrate all their resources on one OS and not 3! That's good for us consumers too!

I am the first to admit and criticize many of the schemes... err... campaigns pushed by the marketing weenies at MS as ill-conceived, misguided and mismanaged. And I note some of the executive decisions upper C-level management has made were horrendous (like forcing W8's "Metro UI on us!). But the developers at MS are top notch and really know what they are doing and should not be faulted for the decisions made in the other "out-of-touch", departments.

Bottom line, her rationale is severely flawed.

    Too late now.

@zapjb - Thank you for the "Yes it does" -- I needed someone to say that.

@roger_m & @guest & @Bill_Bright -- Thank you for your comments, even the critical ones. It shows that you care. The following comments are thoughts in general, directed at no one in particular....

It's interesting how many assumptions folks can jump to, based on only a few tidbits of information. Examples:
1- If someone chooses an OS other than Win10, they are ignorant about security.
2- Security is impossible if someone runs Win7 or Win8.1.
3- Failing to cynically accept bad situations and reprehensible acts, but instead wanting to do something about them, is to be in a teen-age "dream state".
4- One can be intelligent without being smart**.

**Actually, "intelligence" is what someone is born with, "smart" is what someone has learned through education and experience, and "wisdom" is someone's ability to apply their knowledge and intellect to real world situations in an effective & compassionate way. This girl has had a tough life. Life's circumstances enrolled her in the "college of hard knocks" when she was only 9, & she still attends. She is book smart, & (sadly) street smart, and wise far beyond her years. She is entering college on a full-ride for a pre-law curriculum next Sept, shortly after she turns 15. I met her at church. I am honored to say she is my friend and that I have slowly earned her trust.

    One OS and not 3?
Is this marketing for MS or just your opinion?
Because last time I checked windows 10 is constant support for 3 rings slow/fast/release and another 3 for LTSB.
supporting windows10 = supporting not 1 but minimum 6 different OSes....

Oh goody. Another 8.1 to join some of us very satisfied (and solidly protected I might add) happy campers.

Don't forget to absolutely test out the Custom Refresh mechanism (if she can spare the time before adding all apps) so she can gain some insight into what is always been a very valuable feature for me in event of some Windows weirdness-which is quite rare for 8.1 BTW thank goodness.
