If you want to learn about loading OS's, Linux, backup & restoring maybe even using different Distros, multi-booting etc. this would be perfect. Just grab all the data you want to keep off it first. You could always do a fresh install of W7 if you have the key. Another great learning opportunity, loading drivers etc. If you just want to use your PC's like toasters then just give it away. But then why are you here at Wilders the best forum of it's kind?
Kind of expensive turning hardware into doorstops due to software/driver problems. Like trading in your car because your tire is flat. Can you learn some basic maintenance skills to solve problems cheaply or have a friend come over and troubleshoot it? ie. how to clean install an operating system, how to partition your drive, how to use imaging software to backup and restore, how to tell what is slowing down your computer, etc.
Agreed with the others. Experiment and learn. I learned more trashing Windows installs than I ever did using working machines.
Remove HDD or SSD from it physically and sell laptop without drive on Internet. You would have some money, somebody cheap, working laptop.
Well, if I was really disgusted with its performance after trying whatever and didn't want to refurbish it, I would donate it or get it to a recycling facility. I would never throw it in a landfill or anywhere where it can harm the soil and/or water.
Definitely a candidate to be converted to Linux. I wasted Vista on an old under powered laptop once and replaced it with Ubuntu. It totally transformed it.
I'll take it, even pay the postage. Shoot me a PM. I suggested elsewhere you should have a second machine for testing... just saying.
I have an old Dell laptop running Win Vista with 4G RAM. I haven't even turned it on in over 2 yrs, but hated to get rid of it because it runs well and has never caused a problem. I kept it offline and used it for my writing and other work but eventually just put it aside and it's sat gathering dust. I may crank it up and try a beginner friendly version of Linux. There's bound to be one.
That's a decent machine. It's light on cores, but i5 is OK. Buy a USB DVD drive, and install using that. And why not learn Linux? Start with one of the lighter Ubuntu variants. Or even Debian with the XFCE desktop.
Your computer is more than powerful enough for Windows 10 to run fast on it. Perhaps doing a refresh or reset of Windows 10 would help. https://www.howtogeek.com/75901/how...set-in-windows-8-to-easily-reinstall-your-pc/ Do a backup first.
