My brand new PC , Every thing has been installed correctly , No extra software but before I install a software I created a system restore just in case then I tried to restore but I received error like this https://i.imgur.com/cderiR8.png 1. Now what did go wrong ? 2. How can I test a system restore after creating so I know some thing wrong and not just when I need it? 3. Is there any other correct and stable way to create system restore? For example should I close all applications or do it in safe mode? This is very frustrating
I'd forget about restore points. You need a program that will image your entire drive/s. Macrium Reflect free version works for me.
Finally got around to making a current backup. My others are 6 mo old, not prudent. Anyways I agree with Krusty. Windows system restore is not to be counted on. And unless you've tested your backup you'll not know 100% either. But I digress. I'm thinking you're a beginner, no biggie we've all been there. At least 1 backup program is prudent. Some including me have you used 2 or more imaging programs as a hedge. And it goes on from there to much more comprehensive routes. But if you want minimal learning & a modest shtf solution go Macrium Free. Also AOEMI BackerUpper Free is pretty good. Me I depend on an ancient program that nobody uses but I can't get away from because in my selling-repairing used PC's days it never failed in 100's of uses. Good luck have fun. Read, ask, learn & practice.
So basically you are telling me if I install a software and I then realize I can't trust the software I just restore my whole pc from that backup software (image back up) And do you mean every time I install a software I have to spend hours to backup?
Yes, that's the idea. Don't know about "hours to backup" it takes me few minutes with differential or incremental backup. System restore will restore just some parts of OS and I wouldn't trust it to do a proper job. With whole system image restore you can be sure that the things are the same as they were when backup was created.
That's what I'd do. Hours? My slowest machines takes about 1/2 an hour to do a full backup and around 1/4 of an hour to restore once booted to the recovery environment. Sounds like you need to find a cheap second hand machine for testing and leave your main machine in a stable condition.
System Restore will replace the registry from the restore point but there are many parts of the file system it does not touch. In particular it does not remove a lot of things. I would not count on it to remove untrusted software after the fact. I have been using the paid version of Macrium for quite some time with the "Incrementals forever" profile and it has been a mostly good experience. It can be a pretty fast restore when it goes as expected. If it deletes and recreates the partitions it takes hours.
It should only take a few minutes. But if you have 50 copies of Rambo in the OS partition it will take hours. I recommend having non OS data files in a separate partition.
