Forward-looking: Hard drive sales have been on the decline for years, and while spinning disks aren't going to dissapear overnight, involved companies are already looking elsewhere.
Nidec, a longtime supplier of spindle motors for hard drives, predicts hard drive shipments will drop by almost 50 percent this year. As such, the motor maker will shift its focus to areas like brushless DC motors and 5G antennas.

Nidec produces the spindle motors used in hard drives, they claim its product can be found in some 85 percent of products on the market. That would lend a certain amount of credence to its projections.
Nicec notes that PC hard drives have been gradually declining since 2013, but 2019 will see a sharp drop -- going from 124 million units sold in 2018 to just 64 million units in 2019, or roughly a 48 percent decline.

Spinning disks still offer the cheapest, densest storage available, and while they're not relevant for primary storage anymore, they still offer significant value in areas like NAS, surveillance, or secondary storage.

I guess this means that SSD's will finally become the standard on PC's, sounds good to me.

Same here.
I have an SSD on all 5 of my machines and will never go back.

I currently use a combo between SSD and HDD, but what I hate about the HDD is that when you access data, there will be a little delay when Windows Explorer shows the folder tree, I suppose you won't see this with a SSD. So the plan is to use SSD's not only for Windows + apps, but also for data storage. I'm done with slow HDD's.

At some point, analysts’ graphs indicated, there would be parity, if not a crossover point, at which time SSDs would perhaps kill off HDDs.

Hear that sound? That’s the death knell for hard drives…right?
Not so fast
Yes, hard drive shipments are in trouble, and their slower performance compared to SSD technology is largely to blame. Arguably the biggest bombshell to drop in this space came with 2018 financial disclosures from Nidec, which manufactures most of the world’s hard drive spindles.

Despite the rampant growth of SSDs in the enterprise market, data center hard drive shipments are actually growing.
Will the gap dramatically narrow between HDD and SSD in the data center, as it did in the consumer market? Some experts say it won’t any time soon.
