@itman -- Thank you to the nth. As I now understand it, the potential pitfall of the scan cache is avoidable if the user periodically does an In-depth scan rather than totally relying on speedy Smart Scans.

Eset recommends running an in-depth scan monthly and Smart scans weekly.

Also if you feel current default Smart scan realtime ThreatSense parameters are inadequate, you can change them to whatever you want. Note that Smart file scanning does not scan archives for example. This is because the ThreatSense realtime options for Web Protection do so at file download time by default. And, any executable in the archive would be rescanned at execution time.

I have been using Eset for 4+ years. The only thing on-demand/scheduled file scanning caught was my own created test .Net based global keylogger. It had been sitting on my HDD for sometime undetected. A while back, Eset beefed up heuristic scanning and flagged it as suspicious and uploaded it to the cloud for further analysis. Low and behold, they created a new sig. for my keylogger creation. See, we all try to help Eset out ………………….

Bottom line - the chances of known malware hitting your disk via Internet download using Eset in next to nil.

That's one of the main reasons I shall recommend it to my colleagues, friends, & family. Thanks for the explanations!

Cache.ndb contains information about files that were already submitted or were rejected by ESET's servers. The main cache is local.db and contains information about already scanned files, whitelisted and blocked files (in case of ESET Dynamic Threat Defense). Then we have scan cache which contains results of code emulation by advanced heuristics.
