    @bellgamin ,
    Thanks again, but I have to clarify that my question refers to Stinger detection rates and capabilities, not to your personal opinion and your security setup.

    When I posted up on the 18th, Stinger was at v12.1.0.3116. The latest is .3125.

    I'm not even going to bother to download and run it to see if there is any change to Real Protect's version or beta status as there is no other way to check on that. I'm going to wait, and not holding my breath, for it to enter an official release. Hopefully as stand-alone application, as it should be. In the meantime, I can do without it or Stinger but only because I've grown weary of the process.

    As for Stinger, which is really not the focused topic of this thread, it seems if one wants to run an effective Stinger scan, one must download the latest Stinger executable with its latest threat payload. Per the Mcafee Stinger page: "Details on new or enhanced signatures added with each Stinger build are listed in the Readme details." (I confess to not searching for and reading a whole Stinger-only thread if that's already been discussed. It's just my FWIW FYI here.)

    Speaking of that, Stinger stuff is in:
    http://downloadcenter.mcafee.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger/
    But go up to the parent directory, you'll find a Stinger10.2.exe. Whut??
    In several respects, I tend to disagree. Cheers.

    Hi FanJ. I'm happy to see that you're keeping on keeping on. Aloha from Hawaii !

    Yes, 3125 is the latest as of 640 PM, 4/27/2019, Pacific time. Beta or not, Real Protect is too good a free bonus to pass up. It runs super light & smooth as silk.

    Thanks FanJ! Imagine my relief in finding out I no longer need to select my browser bookmark for that link I posted and check on the date/time stamps directly at the source.

    Despite having thrown in the towel on installed AV's for third party security layering Stinger was always for me a nice addition to run occasion scans if nothing else just to be sure it detected my zoo specimens and had adequate detection ability.

    With this new Real Protect feature I may just have to see how she fits in this system again. Thanks for the comments and opinions on it.

    Very nice - are there any options for real time protection or just on/off?

    No options. It's very light & unadorned.

    So you guys finding this program pretty stable? Around the time I tried it last, my PC has a number off issues, and I eventually had to wipe windows and reinstall to get everything fixed. I don't know that it was mcafee, but I am cautious now.

    Perhaps your problem was with McAfee AV. Stinger is NOT the real-time McAfee AV. Unlike McAfee AV, Stinger is on-demand only & does not install. Ergo, I doubt that Stinger could cause of stability problems that would necessitate re-installing Windows.

    I have not used regular mcafee av in ages. I don't like it. Tempted to try stinger again though. Since the windows reinstall, I have just been using Defender, but would like to get something different on here at some point.

    If you want Stinger's Real Protect, it's a good addition. Stinger itself is so-so. There are better on-demand scanner choices such as (but not necessarily limited to): http://get.hitmanpro.com/ and https://www.emsisoft.com/en/home/emergencykit/.

    I don't care at all for the on-demand scanner. Mostly interested in the new realtime protection.

    I reinstalled earlier today, and it seems to run light. I wish there were some tests out there on it's real-time protection effectiveness though. I have no idea if it is adding anything over Defender or not. And it does not disable Defender on install.

    Stinger itself isn't "installed" because, when you don't want it around any more, it doesn't need to be "UNinstalled" -- just delete it. Moreover, Stinger is by no means the equal of a full-on AV, such as Defender. Instead, Stinger is a specialized scanner with a limited scope -- see posts #22 & #23 & #24 in this thread.

    Defender is a full-fledged, real-time/patrolling AV whereas Stinger is just an on-demand scanner with limited scope. Defender wouldn't be *disabled* except by another full-fledged, real-time/patrolling AV such as Norton AV or Vipre AV.

    Emsisoft's EEK & TrendMicro's Housecall & Norton's Power Eraser (3 examples of superb, on-demand scanners) have much larger scopes in their scans than does Stinger. I keep Stinger around primarily because of its accompanying component, RealProtect -- a patrolling behavior checker still in beta test stage. Stinger runs on-demand only, whereas RealProtect runs real-time.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Uh-oh -- since I mentioned Norton's Power Eraser (NPE) I better add the note that it is VERY aggressive. In my opinion, NPE is not for a casual user! Up above, I linked to NPE's download web page. Before you decide whether or not to use NPE, I urge you to read that entire web page as well as the tutorial linked-to on that page, in the blue band of text near the bottom of the page. You might also find it instructive to read the fairly objective review of NPE at HERE.
    When I say Stinger, I meant "Real protect". I just say stinger, because that is the program you install to get it.
    As a matter of interest for those using Stinger, THIS is McAfee's download & instructional page for McAfee Stinger.
    No, not so far. Neither does Stinger itself. I suppose downloading the latest Stinger will also include any updates to Real Protect.
    I reinstalled a bit ago, but guess Real Protect is still on 4/25 build.
