How dark mode took over our screens

I opened in tabs these chrome://flags, chrome://version or chrome://chrome-urls, it didn't work.

 

Launching Google Chrome like this:
google-chrome-stable --enable-features=WebUIDarkMode --force-dark-mode
and using the Classic theme on Kubuntu 18.04. (This was working even in v73).

 

So the part in red letters must be in the command line?

 

Yes, that's the name of the application. I've bound the entire command to Super+G as a keyboard shortcut.

 

I did not need two of them and it worked fine for me. This is on Windows 10 to be clear. Not sure about Linux.

 

There's an untriaged bug on Chrome's internal pages not being themed: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=946166

It was filed on 27 March so it doesn't seem to be a top priority.

 

Interestingly if I go to the chrome://flags page and enable "Remove fakebox from the NTP" it seems to enable dark mode without using the command line -force-dark-mode switch. It's worked this way on 3 so it would seem likely they are related.

 

I have to agree with guest... light themes and even wallpapers hurt my eyes, so I use this extension on my computer and night mode on my phone.

 

I like Dark Reader. I've been using Dark Mode, but I'll give Dark Reader a try and see how it compares.

 

Note: Some people don't need to "force" it but can simply change the Windows 10 color setting to "Dark" and Chrome is automatically switching to Dark Mode:

I think they changed something as I did have to force it to start with but now I do not and it still works. This was after the update so it wasn't the new version itself.

FYI Dark Reader works better for me than the Dark Mode extension. It's more adjustable and renders some pages I was having trouble with better.
