To me, this statement is a hidden confession that their growth is not good and they aren't where they need to be. One doesn't need to fix the licensing model OR regulate prices to this expensive one has a good retail, channel and distribution footprint. Just look at AVG, BullGuard, or even McAfee and Norton - subscription rates and renewal discounts are fixed, but you can renew/upgrade at any time using the cheapest possible means to get a license - retail or online. These products have a high loyalty rate for this reason.

Emsisoft experimenting with pricing like this, the statement about early renewal and with their customer profile (mostly, older people) indicates that they do not have a stable or good customer base and are now going to try a variety of methods to reach out more.

Ending the loyalty discount won't make sense without a retail push, so good luck for that. P. S. Region specific pricing and non time limited renewals will help.

Emsisoft used to have agressive region specific prices, it was one of the cheapest solutions in Brazil (2009 ~ 2011), nowadays it is much more expensive than Kaspersky/ESET/Norton here.

Without loyalt discount and region specific pricing I was forced to jump ship.

Any company will always try to grow its customer base. That's in the interest of the company and the very foundation of capitalism. Our growth has been actually quite good for a company without venture capital funding, which we don't like to accept due to the many strings attached. The reduction of the price is really a direct consequence of the community giving us constant feedback that we are too pricy. That has been the number one complaint in pretty much all reviews or whenever our products come up.

We do offer region-specific pricing. There are quite big discounts, depending on where you order from. The time-limited renewals are actually the result of our Online Armor cancellation. There were literally over a hundred people who had licenses that exceeded 10 years. One of them bought 27 years of license time. Essentially just a bunch of promotions stacked on top of each other, combined with free giveaways and other things. At that time we decided that we don't want to run into this problem ever again in the future. That limitation has been in place for so long, that I literally forgot about it when I replied to the question on MT. So blame me for not being 100% accurate in my reply.

It's not just the price, what I have seen is that many would pay a premium for a superior product. The thing is that it's a tough sell to market "anti-malware" when the competitors have suites (sometimes with PC optimization tools) at similar price points.

In my country EAM competes with BitDefender IS, BullGuard Premium, Kaspersky IS, McAfee total protection and AVG ultimate. That's very tough competition. What makes it worse for normal Joe is emsisoft doesn't offer equivalent features. I understand the philosophy of being purely security focused, but these days products are turning into system expert kind of software. Emsi should explore bundling deals with popular software makers for PC tuneup and identity protection services IMHO and offer it at a higher price.

Just a quick question. Given EAM switched to the Windows Firewall anyway, I want to ask how was the net retrospective ROI on the OA acquisition. I don't recall reading much on the matter. It's totally OK if you don't want to talk about that though. :)

It's kind of difficult to find a "PC tuneup software" that isn't shady or at least of questionable use. I think a more interesting avenue to explore is to enable our partners to maintain their customer's computers for them. The upcoming cloud features are actually the first step in that direction.

It was profitable, even though we essentially ended up using nothing of the original code for EIS.

  7. Can someone explain to me why there is not an option to delete permanently all logs from EAM? Logs seem to be stored in the logs.db3 file in the Program Files/Emsisoft/Logs folder. Can we please have an option to permanently delete these logs. You can uncheck sending certain data to Emsisoft in settings but there is no way to uncheck the collecting of logs on disk and no way to delete the log file without uninstalling EAM or using a file shredder.

There's a clear button inside the Logs section that empties the entire database.

@Fabian Wosar at the time when I was your community manager I suggested the idea of bundling EAM with a decent VPN, when I see now the growth/hype of VPNs, it wasn't a so bad idea.

The name may be slightly misleading here. The file is a sqlite database that stores all sorts of information for the program to operate. You can view the content with any sqlite viewer if you like.

Please DO NOT delete that file, or the software may not be able to operate correctly.

To clear all 'logging' data hit the Clear button in the Logs section of the software, as Fabian suggested. Alternatively you can also go to Settings - Advanced and click the Revert button at the Factory Defaults section. Then you'll get a dialog to confirm that you want to delete only all logs and counters.

Emsisoft only costs something 19 bucks in my region on Europe and it has been like that for a long time so I dont need to renew or find shady sites to find license codes at all ( I never used cracked licenses ) . But the approach of competition to others is interesting and very realistic. What will a person choose between a full suite and just an anti malware? I would go with privacy in the first place . Emsisoft does great in this area.

I wasnt aware of the license price increase. Right now it costs almost twice as much to renew my 3 PC license compared to 2018.

Ive been a loyal user of Emsisoft since 2012 (Prior to that i used it intermitently while i tried other products). Feel sad that they had to increase the price. Always loved their customer support and of course their prices.
Seems like i will have to look for alternatives when my license expires.
    It was a good journey.

IIRC Emsisoft actually reduced the price for EAM, BUT at the same time they eliminated the loyalty discount.

Yeah but in my case i kept using Emsisoft for the two reasons i mentioned above. 1. Great price 2. Great customer support

With their current pricing they are just as expensive as comparable vanilla AVs. In fact, Bitdefender AV Plus 3 PC license costs 11 dollars less or i can get Kaspersky AV 3 PC license for 1 dollar less. (Had to edit some stuff out due to incorrect statements)

All im saying is that the price increase was too drastic, specially for loyal customers which were used to the cheaper prices and were probably loyal due to that. (Just like me)
I wouldve extended my license for a couple years before the price increase but i didnt receive any email.

Even though i still have 5 months left, im already looking at alternatives.

i let Emsi go this time because i felt the lack of the firewall and other elements means something to me . Bitdefender or even KIaspersky have almost similar prices or even McAfee has cheaper price for more elements including phone protection etc etc

Poor people, 3-4usd/month is so expensive, but oh wait they rather find free sucky AVs than reducing their monthly expense of cigaret or junk food or whatever useless things they buy...

Come on... EAM isn't so pricey...

Remind me a business customer who refused to buy the solution I recommended, he had to pay 100 times more to get his machines back after being hit by a ransomware lol

Suites are NOT sweet. Who wants a shovel with a CD Player & a can opener in the handle? Not me. The same applies to anti-malware suites. K.I.S.S.

Did you mention any VPN in specific?
Considering that Emsisoft is viewed as a privacy-respecting company, they have to be careful as to who they bundle with.

Did you have particular VPN in mind?

Fabian said the following over at Malwaretips

"We do have offers up the majority of the time. In fact, if you would like us to offer a bundle with a particular software you like very much, let me know and I will tell marketing to seek them out and with a bit of luck they may show up as a bundle offer in the future."

I made a table with rates, pros and cons, based on my own researches but I won't mention here which ones. :p
